My printer is working now, so I no longer get the error message.
However, retrieving mail is still impacting on the printer.

Just now, when I pick up my mail, I have 30 messages being downloaded to
my computer. I was looking at my taskbar. Shortly after the mail
retrieval started, the printer icon appears on the task bar. When I
opened the printer dialogbox, it shows several messages waiting in que
to be printed; and the light on my printer flashes. Not all 30 messages
showed up in the printer dialogbox, only some. And the funny thing is
that none of the messages were actually printed.

I am just curious as to why this is happening. [It would that this is
caused by TheBat!] And does this happen to any of you out there?

do you know how TB knows which message to download again?

For example, on my private accounts, I download the mail in the
office "leave messages on server". Each message will be doowloaded
only once (save for the occasions Susanne has described).

When I get home, all messages get downloaded. Since they were already
marked "Read" (as opposed to "New") on the server, TB must store this
info somewhere in a file.

Therefore, if TB downloads messages that are already on the computer,
this file is corrupted. You follow me?

There is also a second rumour going around, this one saying that The

If you're having problems with your mail server timing out on you in the
middle of downloading mail, then TB! will likely lose track of which
mail was already downloaded. This problem cannot be avoided under these
circumstances. The problem will go away when your mail server settles
down and starts being as responsive as it used to be. For the time being
you'll have to delete mail immediately after downloading mail or use the
mail dispatcher to manage mail on the server.

Thanks for the advice!

But I really *want* my messages to remain on the server for one
day, and before, this always worked without any problems.

I've used TB with the same settings for months and the first time
I've had this problem was 12/20.

That doesn't seem to be the case.
The downloading works perfectly normal most of the time, with TB
only downloading the new mails.
Just lately it happens at least once a day, sometimes several
times, that TB suddenly sees all the mails on the server as new
again and starts to download them all.

If I go into dispatch and uncheck the 'receive' behind all the
old mails, everything is fine again, but it takes time to do
this.

And sometimes I don't notice it, until a lot of mails have
already been downloaded. Since I worked through most of these
mails already and they are mostly deleted at this point I end up
having to delete a whole bunch all over again, because 'Killing
dupes' doesn't help me in this case.

AFAIK, this cannot be pulled off with a single regex macro. This is
complex text processing that has to be done. It would need to be a
script that runs multiple search and delete operations (a regex being
used for each operation) and finally outputting the result. A Perl
script for example.

The regex macros that we've been using do a simple match and then either
outputs the entire match or a matched regex subpattern.

It's now happening all the time, to the point where it gets
annoying to go into "Dispatch on Server" and mark the messages

I don't really want to give up leaving the mail on the server for

Is there any further documentation on what is synchronised, and how
any conflicts are handled?

I've just tried this feature for the first time; one problem is that
messages which have been moved between folders on one system but not
the other (eg miscellaneous mail read and moved from the Inbox) is
copied to the new and the original location when the two copies are
sync'd.

Some of this is, I suppose, impossible to avoid in any synchronisation
process, but I can see it becoming a bit of a chore to have to keep
filtering for duplicates.

Any comments on this?

On 27 December, 2000, 1:58 PM, I saw Jan's comments made on
 Wed, 27 Dec 2000 08:32:24 -0500, and thought I'd add my $0.02 worth:

JR> Does this macro assume that if there is no handle, then it will
JR> take the AB First Name & return it as the %FromName so a name is
JR> always inserted, handle or no handle?

It will use the handle name first. If there's no handle name, it will
use the first name from the address book. If there's no first name in
the address book or no address book entry available, then the first name
of the from name in the message headers will be used.

JR> Whereas %ABofromHANDLE would return nothing if there is no handle
JR> present in the AB entry?

That's right, so using the recursed macros would be better. If not
everyone has a handle in your address book then you'd at least need to
use %ABofromHANDLE="OFROMFNAME" if you wish to have some form of useful
output all the time.

Editing bug?

2000-12-27 Thread Douglas Hinds

Hello TBUDLers,

Preferring plain to html for email, I use TB!s editing commands for
all lower case (to reverse the effects that occur if I accidentally
hit the caps lock button for a bit), and use those for First Letter
Cap or CAPS and *x* to highlight or emphasize. OK.

The bug(?) is what happens when an apostrophe IS involved (aas ios
frequent in English), compared to when it isn'T. (get my point)?

Re: New to the BAT, virus question - SOT

2000-12-27 Thread Douglas Hinds

Hello Thomas & other fellow TB! Users following this somewhat ot
thread about viruses,

Tuesday, December 26, 2000, you stated regarding :

TF> "You should have paid and gotten the key, then your PC wouldn't
TF> be down the drain" kind of way. LOL!

I downloaded a free key. But I decided to wait until a new HD is
installed before running it, as I assume it's time limited, and the
HD seller is now exchanging it for another one. I didn't want the
days going by without using the computer, but I'll probably run it
already anyway, and keep freeing up space, meanwhile.

What I'm doing now is hitting ctrl+alt+delete and shutting down the
spider (the only way that can be done), then deleting the file and
reactivating spider / DrWeb. But it's too much trouble and sometimes
makes me reboot anyway. But McAfee's email protection scheme caused
much worse problems and was unworkable. If this thing is that good,
I might just subscribe.

However, there are other good ones also - Kapersky, avx etc.,
(you've also mention some) and I'll need the new HD running in order
to try others. I installed DrWeb in order to delete the McAfee
directory from I:\, where TB!, my fax program and Netscape 4.05 (the
last v. I downloaded, as it's just a back up) also are.

DH>> (I hope that looking at it as I did in Notepad is safe).

TF> It usually would, even though I don't know that particular virus.
TF> Viruses need to be run, started, executed, whatever, to work, but
TF> looking at them wouldn't start the code.

IOW, activating it by viewing it (by changing the extension to txt
and double clicking) won't activate is viral, worm or trojan
function. But that's just an assumption I wanted to verify.

Tracer does this though, and that's part of his line of work. (He
must be rather busy lately, since he rarely posts these days).

Actually, it's a nested fail-safe.

if the ABhandle is not available, use the ABfirstname /then/ (and
finally) if the ABfirstname is not available use the original
OFROMFNAME instead.

That way, you'll always get something, whether or not the individual
is in your address book.

This proved to be the problem. Here's what I discovered.

Reply was calling the folder template which does not contain the
%ABofromHANDLE rather than the AB entry which does contain the
  Handle macro.

I had created an additional AB (as opposed to a group) to
accommodate a mass mailing so as a last gasp I did an F7 search
of all my address books & discovered a duplicate entry of the name
  in question.

It has been suggested that when there are duplicate entries, funny
things happen with the ABxxxPPP macro. I guess this is what
happened here because when I erased the duplicate entry, the macro
worked as you can see below.

Hello Trooper, Alexx & Julee

XX Jan was here XX

I have quite a few duplicate entries because I couldn't assign
name #1 in AB #1 to AB #2 which was prepared for a mass mailing.
Or could I have just created an AB group for the mass mailing in
which case I just needed one entry assigned to various groups?

  Thanks, all.

Are you certain that it is? Can you put some kind of indicator into

which will prove that the right template is being used.

Yes, I was also wondering if the file attributes on a writable CD (not

Hello Jan (test),

I have you in my address book and changed the handle to "Jan (test)"

As you can see it works as it puts the handle after Hello.
