In my opinion the CC is a significant improvement to TB. I found the
old progress bar to be next to useless. If you resize the entire CC so
that you can see all columns in the upper window and scroll down to
the log in the lower window, you've got a superb option for control of
your doings when sending and receiving mails - IMO!

"Delete" is for deleting queued tasks and "Abort" is for stopping
in-progress action. Both work without any trouble here.

Wise decision. Anotehr unfixed beta-bug. Should have been fixed before
putting a release version on the website. Maybe it's fixed in one of
the 1.52 c,d,e,... versions? Still no idea who these version differ.

Re: POP before SMTP trouble and orher questions

Urke wrote:

U> Yahoo mail require POP before SMTP authentication, and I check this

Multithreading problem, old bug:

When you have enabled combined delivery, then TB will of course start
a POP session to download mails. At the same time, an SMTP session
should be started, but wait: you have set "POP before SMTP", so the
"send" thread will try to log into your POP server. The "send" session
is unsuccessful, as you are already logged in, and ther POP server
rejects a second log-in under teh same ID.

What happens is then, I am not sure about. Possibility one will tell
the SMTP session that "POP before SMTP" was unsuccessful, and aborts.
Possibility two will start an SMTP session anyway, but since the SMTP
server is not released yet (the POP session is still under way),
sending must be unusccessful.

This bug could be corrected as follows:

If "POP before SMTP" is checked, and "combined delivery"- or a POP
session is active -, then the SMTP session should wait until the POP
session is finished.

This bug has existed ever since "POP before SMTP" was introduced as an
option in TB.

Not so fast. ;-) I am in favour of being able to edit received
messages. Of course, you can do it by mistake, like you can do many
things by mistake (including sending mails to the wrong recipient -
let's forbid this too!).

I often want to edit the subject line, because I keep getting messages
from airfreight offices saying "new airfreight shipment". Well, if it
weren't about an airfreight shipment, why would the airfreight office
send me an email anyway? (It's filtered into the airfreight folder, so
I know before I open the message, even before I open the folder, that
there is a message about an airfreight shipment). 10 emails with the
same subject don't help: so I want to change the subject to "shipper
name / consignee name", and in some cases add the order number or
shipment number.

This is my major reason.

Also, people tend to fullquote in the business world, and I don't want
to keep all 14K of the message. So I want to cut off the garbage.

Exporting, editing, importing is too troublesome. It should be
possible to do it on the fly. With an option to activate "Are you sure
Y/N" - "Really? Y/N" - "This is irreversible. Do you mean it? Y/N" if
you want.

Thomas.

Hi,

I've been dealing with a backlog of messages, and after reading, I felt
the need to remind subscribers to please take the time to appropriately
trim the text quoted in their replies. Appropriate trimming makes reading
the message much easier in terms of avoiding unnecessary scrolling/
scanning and it definitely conserves on bandwidth.

Thanks.

Confusion.

In the German download section you read 1.52e, also on the homepage.
What's new reads 1.52c and when downloading and installing it's says 1.52d (see below).

When I compare readme.txt from 1.52c and the newly installed 1.52d:

Actually *NO* difference, except the header:

1.52d

1.53c

No date anymore, only version 1.52!

I'm confused, somebody give me a drink :-)

POP before SMTP trouble and orher questions

2001-05-07 Thread Urke

Hello TBUDL,

First, when I send messages to TBUDL and TBTECH trough yahoo SMTP,
and combined check mailbox on Yahoo mail, Bat only send messages, but
not receive new from mailbox, so I must to Abort job an then only
check mailbox to get new mails.

On Transport tab in Account Properties I check Combined delivery.

Yahoo mail require POP before SMTP authentication, and I check this
option for SMTP intensification properties, so I guess to TB making
mistakes. Em I right?

Second question is why in headers for my post is placed:

X-Apparently-From:

I wonder, why they're not available any more on RIT server?

Not true. I am using 1.52c and i get an access violation, but message is
beeing deleted. It's also strange, because first deletion takes about 15
seconds!

> The error message:
> Access Violation at address 005F9753. Read of address 0008

Thats obvious! Delphi reports Access Violation mostly, when program
refers to not existing object (Button, Label, etc.) or its not existing
property (FE: (FObject as TPanel).Caption:='Hello', When FObject is
TEdit type). Every time it searches in a different part of memory,
that's why numbers changes.

Yes, but it would be nice to make beta 13 and 14 available somehow,

Informations showed by CC are usefull, but I do agree, that it's ugly.

Yes. And I wonder what's the difference (Delete/Abort)?

Well, it's because it's in the developement stadium (Connection Centre).
I also think, that it would be nice to let user choose: Old progress
window or CC.

It is more business orientated for certain. The iKey costs around $40
while SecureBat! itself retails at $140. Certainly not for the casual
user at such levels.

Annotating messages is covered by the "Memo" function of TB. Editing
is a separate issue.

DAC> this is why the header changing workarounds aren't satisfactory
DAC> either.

You see, because you have added "annotating" to the argument, the
original point has been diluted and fuddled.

If you want to annotate a message in-situ, you can. No work-around
needed. Don't confuse the need to annotate with the need to edit
otherwise the whole topic becomes confused (as it is).

If you want to change the content/subject of a message to pick out
salient details you can. While this may have the look and feel of a
work-around, it is adequate for its purpose.

You would annotate a message in context. You would edit a message
outside of a context. You could even cut and paste from several
messages to send yourself a digest of salient points gleaned from a
thread.

Where's the problem? TB may not do received message editing it like
you may be used to or have seen elsewhere, but you certainly can't do
it /by mistake/. That's a "Good Thing" (tm) in my books :-).

AFAIR it will not be available for 'normal user'. I don't know why,
though. There is also StrongBat! out there, but I don't know the

I know that I've mentioned before that it is often more effective to
report bugs on TBBETA and during a beta cycle than most other forms.

OTOH there is a "Help .. feedback .. bug report" option on the main
TB menu which will send a bug report to a place that is certain to be
read.

The common practice for bug reporting is to file one of these reports
and cc it to the TBBETA (or TBUDL but not both) list.

So, who appointed TheBat! watchdog of ethics? If someone wants to
forge messages they can find a way to do it. Software should not be
designed so that all users are hobbled so that some person who wants
to be a bad actor will have to use some other software or also be
inconvenienced.

Hi George,

I think that's not the point. Of course everyone can store their messages
the way they want. The unethical thing IMHO would be, when the message
would appear as sent this way by the author. So I find it absolutely
correct, that TB! does offer a way to store edited messages as described
by Karin and Marck before, including changes of the header info.
In case you need the original header for whatever, you can save it in a

The Bat! 1.52 - bug report

2001-05-07 Thread Karin Spaink

[Actually, this is a copy of a bug report I submitted for
TB 1.48. It still persists.]

I'm using The Bat! Version 1.52
  Serial Number F6B77929
under Windows NT 4.0 Build 1381 Service Pack 6

  The bug description:

When deleting a few mails simultaneously in an open thread
in Folder View, the body part of the screen turns blank. If
you then move to any message, bodies are shown again but the
buttons in the folder view are greyed and unusable.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:

Set your Folder view to Thread by reference, ordered by
subject. Open a tread and delete all (or a few) messages
within that thread. The cursor in the message list will jump
to the higher message and the lower part of the folder view,
where the body of a message is supposed to be shown, goes
blank. At the same time all buttons are greyed out and
unusable. If you then click on a message in Folder view, the
body window gets restored but the buttons remain 'dead'. The
only way to fully restore all functions is to close and
reopen the folder.

Sometimes this kind of problem involves where this filter is in
the list of filters. Consider that TB! starts at the top of the
list & works down the list. Generally speaking, specific filters
go @ the top of the list & gen'l filters go @ the bottom of the

impossible connection with 1.52c fixed

2001-05-07 Thread Sebastian Cano

Hi wise people,

  I noticed a problem with TB1.52c:
Using it in mode Workstation with TCP/IP, "Connect to the Internet
using local area network or manual connection", sending or receiving
anything was impossible. I got an error message each time, error
  633.

I closed The Bat! and ran regedit, and changed the data of value
"Use existing RAS connection" in HKCU/Software/RIT/The Bat!

previous value was 1 (in hexa) and I changed it to 0, it fixed the
  problem.

Hoping it will help anyone having the same problem...

all the header and presence is yes.

I use The Bat v. 1.51(?) on a Win95 machine

De-select "Justify on Wrap" in your options and that will take care of the

alt-L (does what I just did with your message above). Or alt-R
(attaches to the right margin instead of the left and leaves

No TB! does not run on these since they use a completely different

That is dumb! Who owns the disk that the saved messages is on? The
sender or TheBat client owner.

For that matter, TheBat is the only client I have used that doesn't
allow this including Microsoft products. And when does a
"work-around" make it right. Kind of like pushing the car up hill

I can't imagine what the fact many people think it is unethical to
edit received messages would have to do with making this useful
feature available to the rest of us, who find it useful to be able to
annotate messages, or archive less than entire messages or highlight
some particular portion of a message (it would be nice to be able to
put part of a message in italics, or in another color, or another type
size or another font, bu the way) or edit for some other reason.
People who don't think that is ethical don't need to do it, but it
should be possible.

While this is true and fine, it's good to get into the habit of using

Hi Marck,

Historians believe that Mon, 7 May 2001 at 11:54 GMT +0100 was when,

MP> I would advise against reply templates which include the following
MP> macro but it's okay for New messages.

MP> Define a folder template which includes this:

MP> %TO=""%TO='List members <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>'

I thought this was the worst place to use a %TO macro. If you have
this macro, you're in the folder and you click a mailto link, then the
address gets changed to the list address. By the same token, clicking
on an address in TB does the same.

A better solution is to make an address book entry for the list and
make it a favourite. Then if you click the little down arrow next to
the new message icon, you get a list of your favourites. TB organizes
that menu nicely if you use groups.

SecureBat provides the means to manage encrypted mail bases in a seamless
pattern. Message base encryption is done by SecureBat and it's used with a
special iKey (USB) that allows seamless (on the fly) user authentication
via a PIN number which is taken from the iKey.

SecureBat is not yet officially released and is undergoing closed beta

Check out the folder properties. You can define folder specific
templates for messages with variants for New, Reply and Forwarding. I
would advise against reply templates which include the following macro
but it's okay for New messages.

Define a folder template which includes this:

%TO=""%TO='List members <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>'

For replies, define an address book entry for the address of the list
and do something like:

%TO=""%TO='"%OFROMNAME on %ABoreplyNAME" <%OREPLYADDR>'

The %ABoreplyNAME macro pulls up the full name of the list, so keep it
simple at that level.

Try a look at the Folder-Properties / Template ... in the Template use the
macro

%TO="Mailinglistename <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>"

to set the proper recipient :-)

Missing feature?

2001-05-07 Thread Richard Lane

Hello TBUDL,

I've been using The Bat for a few days now and so far I'm extremely
impressed and plan to register it in a few days time.

However, there's something that I'm either missing how to do, or it isn't
available. When I open a folder from one of the many mailing lists I'm
subscribed to and select new, I have to open up the address book to select
the address for it. Is there a way of specifying a default address that
should be inserted on any new mails created when in a particular folder?

1.52 Message centre/Connection Centre problems

2001-05-07 Thread John Rainer

In v1.52, the download progress bar has been replaced, according to
the text file of changes, by the Message centre. As I can't find a
Message centre, I assume this is the Connection centre.

A couple of things:

1. I was quite happy with the old progress bar and now it has been
replaced by something hideously ugly.

2. On checking multiple accounts in previous versions, it would
sometimes fail to retrieve mail from an account. I would cancel
retrieval after oking the warning message, select the account and
retrieve mail ok. With 1.52 the same thing happens but if I now try to
cancel the download, the retrieval can't be cancelled, no matter what
option (Delete task or Abort) I try in the Connection centre. I can
still navigate around the program but I can't get rid of the retrieval
task. If I try to close the whole program down, it hangs completely
and I have to ctl-alt-del to get rid of it.

I'm using The Bat on W2K, and am using Norton AV, which has been
working largely ok with this program for at least 12 months.

Thanks

John Rainer
