I've had somehow similar problems on couple of w2k boxes a couple
of time. I don't know the reason but now it works decently. The
only suggestion is something like "advanced PPP settings" (donno
how it is in English for I use Russian w2k:( Absolutely no
warranty though:)

Best regards,
 Serge Skorokhodov mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

PS. W2k's network works great sometimes and sometimes it
doesn't:( The real problem is that I haven't been able to figure
out why:( Just play with the settings and it's quite possible
that it'll improve:)

RE: The Bat! and Windows 2000

2001-05-19 Thread Steve Mills

Hi, Nick.

All setups are the same, using the same SMTP/POP settings, everything. Like
I say, it's intermittent. Mostly the connections won't work. I'm still
depending on Outlook to do the mailing for me. I'm also slowly migrating all
my mail and contacts, as well. Might ass well do what works 100% of the
time.

Thanks, everyone. I'm outa here.

Do you have similar Accounts set up so that you are you able to connect to
those same Servers using Outlook 2K? If so, you may want to look at how
you've set up connections via Outlook, and see what may be different with
how you've set TB! to connect to them. They should be the same.

Oh sure, if you cheat and look in the help file you can find it. :-)

The list that comes up when you click the Macros button only lists

I've never tried it, but I see there are macros that let you override
the "From" and "ReplyTo" information, so you could probably put them
into your templates. I don't see one that lets you select the account
though. It might be possible to do something with RegEx that would
accomplish that, but I haven't even contemplated getting into that

Yes, I believe you can just move the folders over but be sure to keep
a copy of everything on the old machine or somewhere else till you see
if everything works.

This command will copy TBs registry key to a file called "backbat.reg"
into a directory called "bat" of drive D. Make adjustments if you need to
copy it to a floppy or other drive.

regedit /e d:\bat\batback.reg hkey_current_user\software\rit

This one will restore registry entries to c:\thebat which is where I
keep the program. I have my backup stored in d:\bat Again, make needed
changes to the path. I use Windows 98se. I don't know if this works on
95 or 2K. Hope this helps.

regedit /c d:\bat\batback.reg

I usually get around this by setting the active account to the ISP I'm
connected to (in your case bigpond) - this can be done from the Edit
Mail Message window - Options->Active Account. If necessary, I then
manually change the From and Reply-To headers to the account I want it
to appear I'm posting from (in your case rivernet) - this is mainly
for mailing lists so that my From address is the one I used to subscribe to
the list. Since TB remembers what's been typed in the header fields,
after the first time it's only a few mouse-clicks or keystrokes and
you don't have to worry about switching back and forth between ISP's.

I don't have any problems running The Bat under Win2k, save for one
problem. One server that I use for email constantly has trouble
receiving email, but I don't think this is the bat's fault. I'm
betting it is a bug on the mail server. Other than that, the
application works fine.

Perhaps you should check Options->Network & Admin to make sure your
network settings are setup correctly.

Hi, Ryan.

I selected for The Bat! to be Workstation with TCP/IP, wouldn't this be
correct? I'm just on a regular ISP dialup, no existing network. I have all
priviledges and there are no groups.

I keep email on 3 different servers. One with the dialup and three other
accounts on two servers (netservers.net with HostPro). The same difficulty
applies to all 3 servers. I get only sporadic connection to any of them when
using The Bat!.

Thanks!

ISP Problem

2001-05-19 Thread John Phillips

Hello fellow Bat! fans.

I have two isp accounts - bigpond.com & rivernet.com.au. My dial out
isp is rivernet. I would prefer bigpond, and in fact must use bigpond
when I travel overseas on business, as bigpond provides global roaming
through GRIC.

There is a problem however in that if I am not connected to rivernet,
all mail written in the rivernet folder will not be sent, however
bigpond does not have such a problem; ie rivernet insists that the
SMPT account be mail.rivernet.com.au; whilst bigpond will also allow
the rivernet SMTP. Rivernet will not send using bigpond as the SMTP.

For reasons stated above, and also for connection speed, I would
prefer to use bigpond. Any advice?

TIA

Re[5]: Moving registry entries?

2001-05-19 Thread Michael David

Hi David!

I keep all my mail directories in a TBMail directory within my "My
Documents" folder. This is because I keep everything that needs to be
backed up in My Documents (and nothing else).

So - all I have to do is move my TBMail directory, import the registry
entries, and install TB. Once the TBMail directory has been copied to
the new computer, it takes less than a minute to up and running right
where I left off.

Yes, caution is indeed necessary and this method of moving installations
should only be done provided that you know and understand what it is that
you're doing.

There are entries within the TB! registry subkey that point to where the
TB! working directory is. You have to either be certain that TB! is placed
in the same location as with the previous installations so that the paths
are undisturbed, or you will have to edit the appropriate registry entries
to reflect the new installation location if the path to the new
installation is changed.

If done correctly, it works very well and it would be as if the
installation had not been moved. No configuration should be lost. I've
done so on four occasions and nothing whatsoever happened. It was as if
the installation had not been moved.

Yes but it is a pain when your directories are in a different location. I
do the following

(1) Move all the directories to where they are required

(2) Start a new account but point it to old mail directory. It does pick up
most (but not all) of the settings.

(3) enter in your reg codes.

Hey - your idea worked great!

I have about 10 email accounts I monitor, and now have sent mail from

Thanks for your idea - it was a great solution! :)

Well this sounds a little weird to me but you can cover this
problem by also giving these filtered msgs a color code before
they go into the trash so you can group them quickly & review
them as you say you like to do before their final deletion.

What I do when closing down TB! or SB!, is highlight the Root Folder in

Perfectly right. the only problem with this approach would be messages
with my name in the sender field (maybe from badly programmed HTML
forms, or because messages are coming back). Perhaps I am only
paranoid ...

I remember - very nebulously - once getting mails with my name in the
sender field that I really wanted to read.

As mentioned, with some slight changes, that are technically
equivalent, it now works.* But I had a similar problem some months ago,
which I solved by simply deleting the filter and from then on having
my own posts in TB!-lists folder killed manually.

> Good luck. I'll be reading this thread with continued interest.

Thanx.

*For the logicians beneath us.

1. What I had: IF Sender partly ="dierkhaasis" AND Subject partly
="PGP-Basics" THEN move message to Trash. This killed all messages from
PGP-Basics

2. What works: IF Sender="[EMAIL PROTECTED]" AND Subject partly
="basics" THEN move message to Trash.

I continue this thread and our search because there could well be a
bug behind it.

No. There are some options set in the registry (i.e. the registration
info) and - sadly - not in an INI. If you want them restored you have
to export and import the registry settings. But as long as you don't
delete or change anything by hand there is no risk in doing it.

I use Move to Trash for this, it is much safer, since Trash is only
emptied when I end the session. so if I have a look in there I can
identify if something's gone wrong.

> Only if I used different sender names would I add an 'or' to
> the sender name.

The problem is not the sender's name (mine), but different mailing
lists.

I want to kill every mail I send to the mailing lists. When I send
them (Outgoing Mail) they get killed, *and* I don't want them when
they come back from the lists (Incoming Mail):

1. IF a message comes in containing "dierkhaasis" in the Sender header
AND containing "List Name 1" in the Subject header THEN move it to
Trash.

2. IF message has "dierkhaasis" in Sender AND "List Name 2" in any of
the headers move it to Trash.
.
.
.
.

All those filters (I described them in the mail you answered) can be
put into one because they are *not* mutually exclusive. The less
filters one uses the less problems can stem from their positions.

As I said, the filter (after some logically uninteresting changes) now
works as I want it. The original problem was that messages got
filtered to Trash that did *not* conform to the rule. They did not
have "dierkhaasis" in Sender, so all PGP-Basics messages were trashed.

I hope I made eventually clear what I meant - at least I now tried it
with three different approaches.

Maybe I've misunderstood what the problem is but I have a
similar filter which seems to work in once account for all
folders for all mail lists that I subscribe to.

There is a slight difference: I ask TB! to mark my msgs w a
pre-defined color so I know to ignore them but I can use them
for reference if needed. I understand your desire to dump them
off your drive to save space; no argument w that logic. But
here's my filter which should work w a minor modification.

  Focus: inbox
  Filter: Jan Rifkinson yes
Actions: mark msgs red, set msg color
  Options: continue processing

Put this near (or @) the top of the filter list

The modification needed for your purposes would be under
Actions: delete msg (not off of server)

Only if I used different sender names would I add an 'or' to
  the sender name.

Good idea, but there was nothing there. Perhaps I have waited too long

Yes, there have been problems elsewhere on the system, including a

I have seen Bat Messages asking me if I wish to "repair." I have
always replied "Yes" and the repair has occurred without problem in
every case.

I've not lost any other data from other programs.

I appreciate your early and thoughtful response, Allie.

Sounds bizarre. Bizarre problems with a folder may indicate a message base
corruption.

My only suggestion is to select the folder, go to the folder menu and
choose 'browse deleted messages'. If the deleted messages are there, then
you can restore them, otherwise they are likely gone forever with your
only means of restoring them being from a backup.

TB! is quite a stable product and this is unusual. Are there any problems
elsewhere on your system?

Finding and recovering lost messages; all in a range of dates have diappeared from InBox.

2001-05-19 Thread David Robert Austen

(I first asked for this help on this matter on May 15, but there was
no reply at all. Is there *anybody* there who can understand why these
messages are disappearing and where they might be going?)

Greetings,

I have discovered that every downloaded Inbox message *Created*
between from 7 May to 15 May (inclusive) is suddenly missing. Other
messages all seem to be here, still intact, in my Inbox.

(At the same time, the order of the columns (fields)in my Inbox became
somewhat rearranged.)

The only hint of trouble I saw was the warning messages that came up,
warning of The Bat's inability to locate a certain folder I created
that same morning - for filtering out some spam. Somehow that folder's
name became badly corrupted.

I also had my sys freeze once or twice while The Bat was operational;
the cause is not known.

(TBUDL messages are filtered to their own folder, and no TBUDL
messages are missing from that week-long period.)

I have done searches of Bat messages and archives here and find no
clues to this problem. Your assistance would be much appreciated.

Clues or comments?

Thank you in advance.

David Austen

Open the registry editor (regedit.exe), search for RITLabs, mark the
registry tree, got to File/Export, save the tree on a floppy. then put
the floppy in your new machine, open it and double click the registry
file you find on it (it's your saved tree). It will be written
automatically to your existing registry.

Could it have anything to do with the status bar at the bottom of the
editor window. You can change block/cursor behaviour by clicking in
the fields (Insert<->Overwrite etc).

Re: Filter problem

The alternatives have nothing to do with PGP-Basics, they are for TB
lists and use TBOT, TBBETA, TBTECH OR TBUDL in Kludges Yes AND
dierkhaasis in Sender Yes. They work fine. I know that every set on
alternatives tab is connected to the other sets by OR. Every rule in
one set (either main or alternative) is connected by AND.

Overview

Main rule (one set): dierkhaasis in Sender Yes AND PGP-Baiscs in
Subject Yes
Alternative rules: Set 1. dierkhaasis in Sender Yes AND TBOT in
Kludges Yes OR Set 2. dierkhaasis in Sender Yes AND TBBETA in Kludges
Yes OR Set 3. dierkhaasis in Sender Yes AND TBUDL in Kludges Yes OR
Set 4. dierkhaasis in Sender Yes AND TBTECH in Kludges Yes

Filter is active, moves filtered messages to Trash and marks them
read.

As told in another mail it now works with a change in the main rule:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] in Sender Yes AND basics in Subject Yes.

I really would like to solve this riddle because I had a similar
problem some time ago with a similar filter. The problem couldn't be
solved; the logic of the filter then was OK.

PS: The "Mailinglist kill" filter nests at third position before TB!
and PGP lists filters, just behind Send keys and private, both of
which have nothing in common with following filters.
