Dispatch Center access

2001-06-21 Thread Scott Frederick

Hello TBUDL,

How do you access the Dispatch Center (I think that is what it is
called)? The thing that allows you to delete or otherwise handle
messages on the server before downloading.

I have looked in Help, the unnoficial FAQ, and the Keyboard
shortcuts list. I can't find any mention of it.

I have accidentally opened it, but I don't know how I did it
  (keyboard fumble probably).

Using The Bat! 1.53bis under Windows 98 4.10 Build A

Better than nothing, but that's a kludge fix really, not a solution.

Well, good point. I would like to have the option to at least be able
to set it as automatic though. Far, far more times I will want my
quoted material rewrapped than not. And it would be rather easy to
build in url-removal from wrapping and even short line-removal so lists
and such are kept in order (though the definition of a short line would
be troublesome). That stuff is easy, which is sort of why I am a bit
boggled that it hasn't been implemented when so many more difficult
things have been.

When that is implemented, I will be first in line to buy TheBat!

I see what you mean. I would probably judge that your average user
would much rather have it wrapped than not, so a default setting of
wrapped would be useful in selling TheBat! to people trying out a demo,
but a simple checkbox option would remove that feature for those who
want the quoted material to be truly accurate.

And if it wasn't the default, then a simple checkbox option to enable it
would be the best bet. Either way would be fine with me, but I think
the former would sell more licenses.

Only for a few more days. I was in the process of getting ready to port
over to Mozilla, but I may try TheBat! again to see if I can get used to
the Ctrl-Shift-F usage for turning the Auto-Format on and off. I
generally dislike Alt/Ctrl/etc commands that I would have to use a lot.

Agreed. If I knew the Enter=Hard Return feature would be implemented
soon, I'd get TB! now probably.

Thanks.

I don't think ICQ should be a problem, unless he has very little
memory. I'm running ICQ all the time I'm connected to the Internet,
and no program ever ran out of resources. (And I'm not running just

The problem is that you never get this type of error on Win NT:)
It's typical for Win9x as they use old 16-bit GDI and User
modules:( with limited to 64 k amount of memory for all graphical
objects and Windows' internal data. It is not just GDI who causes
this type of messages. The module 'User' that manages windows,
borders, buttons etc. can easily ran out of memory as well.

Don't use big colorfull wallpapers, active desktop features and
background apps in system tray (at least get rid of those you
don't actually need) -- they all 'eat' memory in surprising
quantities:( Or migrate to NT-family OS (depending on the age of
your computer NT4 or w2k could be the choice).

The problem frequently is not just lack of GDI or User memory but
rather applications that do not release resources correctly.
There are various utilities for memory allocation control just
look up in the Net. They can improve Windows' resource management
at least to some extent.

I know ICQ uses a lot of GDI resources, so I don't know if Daniel is

That's GDI (Graphical Device Interface) resources. I'm also running in

As I wrote, there is *no* common denominator for the systems I
encountered the problem on except for Windows9x (once 98, once 95,
once - my home computer - 95c), TB! and Opera.

On all machines IE was/is present, in two cases not or only
sporadically (my machine) used. Only on my machine are PowerToys
installed and some of them used. Only on my machine the font smoother
W95gray.exe.

This way we may some day find the culprit ... I hope ... ;-).

quick search question

When typing in text, the quick search dialog (which seems to be undocumented)
comes up. Is there a way to go to the next match (i.e., a find next) using
quick search?

Password problem!

2001-06-21 Thread Jonathan Wayne

Been playing with account and group passwords to understand how to best
configure multiple users on a single computer. I then reset the primary
account (which seems to act as the administrator, although I couldn't find this
documented) by deleting the entries in "set account password". Now,
however, I am _always_ prompted for a password when starting TB. (It's null so
I don't enter anything in the password field.) There are no passwords
on the other two accounts, and I've deleted the only Group and it's password.
How do I get back to an unprompted mode??

Also, is there a way to "logoff" the current user without terminating TB?

Thanks -

jon

I'm not saying that you should stop using any of your vital apps. I'm
saying that disabling or closing them systematically to see if one is
causing a problem interaction is all. Just in a effort to try to
illucidate the problem. The ones of particular interest would be the ones
that you have running at all times.

I'd be glad if it was that easy. But what I do run on my machine, did
for good reasons not run on the agency machines. I only installed
Opera and TB! as my own software. The were open sometimes but not
always at the same time.

Just for info:

 F-Secure
 CAPI control
 Multiple Clipboards

 TitleTime
 DeskMenu
 PGPTray (6.5.8ckt06)
 QuickRes
 FreeMem Pro
 Automachron
 GetRight
Guillemot's MaxiStudio ISIS Manager (till yesterday and again,
when my new card is back)

Instead of MS's PowerToy QuickRes I'd like to use the much more
versatile software from Matrox, but with one of the updates of drivers
and software it intended not to work, so I ditched it.

*I* use an NVidia chip and have no problems.

Application interaction is my thinking on the matter. I've had application
interactions cause some interesting things. I can't run WindowBlinds
anymore because it makes PowerPro do strange things. I preferred
functionality to appearance and canned WindowBlinds. It took me a while to
discover what the problem was.

Matrox is one of the bigger companies building graphics adapters. 32
MB is the RAMDAC of my graphics card. Still think it is awfully
little?

The RAM of my computer is 128 MB - really not a problem, even with
Win2K. The other machines had much less (both RAM and graphics RAM),
but were still in the clear for what one was doing.

It occurred to me that there could be a bit more use for this filter.
Having watched it work in conjunction with the filter 2 discussed
elsewhere in the original mail it's proving very effective. There were
two main thoughts:-

1) Pretty simple to add the senders address to the know spam 1 filter
and 2) Could we set-up a filter which forwards the spam to the 'terms
of service'/anti-spam email address of the providers involved ie.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]???. Yahoo/Hotmail would be good first steps (without
having to set-up a separate filter for each).

Anyway thought I'd throw it out there for thoughts.

They are not backups. The first time I encountered the problem on an
LAN in an agency I worked for. It was the first time I really needed
the MT, since I could get mail any second and did not want to look
myself. That's why I always point out the main function of the MT not
as a virtual folder but a real-time notifier.

The second time was on my own machine, where I just tested it (you
see: dial-up paid for by minute, no 24/7). The agency machine - it
were actually two different machines, both with new install, both
differently setup hardware-wise, both quite old (one Pentium, one PII)
- - was very different to mine.

My machine has a Matrox G400 DH (32MB), a PII (233 MHz), and the rest
you find in the sig. Oh, it's an SCSI comp. DirectX 7a is installed
and the font smoother from MS (W95gray).

Just tested, it does not scroll.

Show automatically, Always on top, Auto-zoom, messages of all
priority, Age-limit set to Maximum 30 s, faster. Put on the upper edge
of the monitor.

Tested it with other options (Thin view, Auto-zoom off, not on one of
the edges, no age limit), always gets stuck.
