incoming mail while reading list

2002-05-17 Thread Michael L. Cusac

When I'm reading messages from a mailing list, I have the display set
to show unread only. As I read the messages get marked read
automatically. I may move on from a now-read message I'd like to
reply to, because I want to read the rest of the thread first.

A problem occurs when the connection center kicks in, DLing new
mail; when it's done, the message view refreshes and all the read
mails disappear from view. I can think of a few workarounds for this.

a) Flag messages I may want to reply to, so I can find them again.
   This option is very annoying.

b) Turn off the feature that automatically marks mails read as I go.
Also annoying, since I like that feature a lot.

c) Manually set TB! not to connect to servers while I'm reading, then
change the setting again when I'm done. Super-annoying.

Can somebody suggest a better way for me to handle things?

Does this happen all the time or only with a select group of
forwarders? What comes to mind is the possibility that in the latter
case he/they might use a signature delimiter (dash, dash, space,
return) before the forwarded message. In that case it can't be helped.
Unless you convince him that he should place it below the message.

Might this not be the case, then would appear that you're using a
quoting template that goes bad.

This issue is one of the main reasons why I prefer TB! over say,
Becky.

The way I work around this need is to open multiple messages
simultaneously. While I'm using the ticker virtual folder to peruse
unread messages, I may wish to look for another message or revise
another message without losing where I had reached in the current
message. I just open the other message/s or folder in another window.

I find myself crippled only working with the preview window since I've
grown accustomed to being able to view multiple messages or browse
multiple folders concurrently.

You can't. You don't have to use it anyway. You can create a filter

as the known filter.

Re: I get duplicate messages from local delivery

2002-05-17 Thread Mark Wieder

Um. I have a similar setup in two different client locations, one with
1.53d and one with 1.60h and both get duplicate (sometimes triplicate)
messages at random times. I'd love to blame this on an ISP, but it's
too erratic and happens with any of their several accounts.

I've tried switching them between "workstation without TCP/IP" mode
and "workstation with TCP/IP" mode to no avail. At one point I thought
I had it narrowed down to the number of users simultaneously trying to
send mail, but that didn't seem to be it either. Things seem to have
quieted down lately, but every once in a while the system just burps.

Even weirder, it happens with sent mail as well as received mail.
There will actually be two identical copies of the sent messages in
the sent folder. I'm ready to start blaming this on sunspots.

Thread Error. No more data (259)

2002-05-17 Thread Robert D.

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I get this error, from time to time, when downloading email.

I do NOT have a clue why it happens, I am still investigating if
another program in the Firewall and AV chain may be the culprit.

None the less, it is impossible to close The Bat! I cannot *abort*
from Connection Centre. I cannot *delete task*. Nor can I close down
The Bat!

Instead, I am forced to use a task manager and kill TB.

In the case happening right now, I re-try the email download. It
hangs on the same email as before. I use *CommView* to view what
transpired. I see only the offending *Porn Spam* email and no message
from the MTA of any kind to indicate closing down -- losing packets,
or whatever.

This leads me to believe that some running program here is the
culprit.

In any event, is there a way that *the programmers* could figure a way
to implicitly kill a *send* or a *receive* ??

Just to make sure.
You closed TB
Started explorer, deleted the associations belonging to business card
file
Started TB again
TB wants to be the default .vcf program
And it created a new association?

What's the action associated with .vcf?
On my system it's:

When you hit the short cut ('ctrl' + '=')to complete the
address entry in the To: field, it currently searches the

This is a neat feature that Outlook has and would be nice to
have in TB! also.

even if one chooses not to use the rich text display one will use the

Nope, definitely not up to that task, it's not that important

You *do* need to install an external version of PGP. The plug-ins are
merely a bridge between TB and PGP.

You will need the PGP plug-in DLLs too. You can get these from the

See "Account properties | Options | Message editor settings". See also
Template macros - %SIGNCOMPLETE and %ENCRYPTCOMPLETE.

This may be the lack of the plug-in. Have you "chosen" which OpenPGP
version you are using?

PGP Question.

2002-05-17 Thread Steve VanOostbrugge

I have just become a new user of this program and after setting up my
preferences I then tried to set up my defaults for PGP. It is my intent
to always sign and encrypt by default every outgoing message with PGP.
I have PGP 6.0.2 installed within my machine, and according to the
literature for TB, it says that it only needs this program to sign and
encrypt. I was unable to set up the default sign & encrypt, BUT was
able to manually encrypt my message prior to sending from within the
program's menu.

Is there any way to automatically sign and encrypt the message when I
press "send"? When I do that now, it tells me that OpenPGP is not set
up for signing. I have created all the necessary files from within PGP
for my signature and encryption, why is the program looking elsewhere
(openPGP) for a method of signing and encryption? What am I not setting
up correctly?

have you installed the plugin dll? download it from the ritlabs.com site.

i'd advise against encrypting all your outgoing messages; this list for
one will not be able to decrypt your messages. not to mention all the
people that don't have pgp installed.

yes there is, i'm doing it right now (signing, that is). install the
plugin, and perhaps you should try pgp 6.5.8ckt, from www.ippgpp.com.

I agree. After seeing the "Rich Text/HTML viewer layout" wording, that
is when I derived these settings only pertained to the Rich Text/HTML
mode.

TB! Options | Preferences | Viewer questions - plain text

2002-05-17 Thread Mark Knipfer

In TheBat! 1.60k when I click Options | Preferences | Viewer, the 'View
message using' is set to "Fixed Width Font Viewer (fast)". When I select
an item in the "Item:" list such as Background, Regular Text, or Fixed
Width Text to change the setting, none of the change take affect.
However, when I set 'View message using' to Rich Text/HTML Viewer
(slower but with proportional fonts), all setting take affect. I notice
in the second window it shows "Rich Text/HTML viewer layout". Does this
mean that all settings in the Item list pertains only to the Rich
Text/HTML Viewer setting?

The options you wish to set on a per user basis are general options
that are stored in the registry. The only way they can be set on a per
user basis is if the users each logon as a different Windows user.

Another more convoluted way would be to have each user at launch time
overwrite the TB! registry entries with their own, each time they
start TB!. This would involve the use of batch files which are run
when TB! is closed and restarted for each user. I don't know if you're
up to it.

I fixed the problem on my system (many moons ago) by going into the

closed the options, reopened it and changed the default handler back

When the mail opens, select View|Message List. Voila, message tree.
Having done this once, you shouldn't have to do it again. Now it's on

That *is* the virtual folder. Select View -> Message List in that
window and you will se that it is indeed a folder and not only one
message (that is, if you do have more than one unread messages in the

As everything else seems to be configurable in TB, I was hoping that the
actions of the toolbar buttons were as well. I tend to be a mouse
navigator - I don't use key shortcuts much - and I had hoped to be able
to alter the 'mail download' button to 'download all mail accounts'.

But Shift clicking on it will have to do.

I don't know what could've caused it, over here it works as before. A
possibility to bring back the old setting would be to delete the
filetype and when TB starts again it should create it again and
associate with it correctly.

But why does this work different from AB-templates. It would be more
easy to understand if the folder properties had a tick box for use

you do not now at once when you look at a folder if you are
