TB! Magazine Review

Hi,
I was sitting down reading my latest CPU magazine and they had a
software review article on TB!. Heres the article:

"Just because Microsoft, Eudora, and Netscape/Mozilla account for roughly 90% of the
email programs most Windows users use doesn’t mean that what remains isn’t worth
checking out.
PocoMail, Pegasus Mail, and The Bat! each has its own following and advantages over
the mainstream mailers.
The latest beta from The Bat! has me thinking that it’s starting to pull away from its
immediate competitors.
The Bat! has been around for years and was considered the power emailer’s client
choice because it was fast, had a great template set, a powerful (if underutilized
plug-in set), and eschewed HTML mail.
Version 2 added some support for HTML mail, a much more powerful LDAP-compatible
address book, and for some users, a whole host of bugs.
Recent betas have been chasing these bugs away, and as a longtime user, I can say
2.01.50 seems ready for primetime.
Unchanged is TB’s speed, which is awesome. Even on a notebook, TB flies through
downloads, uploads, and message rendering.
Unlike other programs that should know better, you don’t need the mouse to blast
through message lists.
This is partially due to TB not displaying and downloading embedded or linked graphics
in HTML mail and partially because the HTML rendering is just the basics, but this
offers a level of viral protection simply not available with anything from Microsoft.
(Clicking a button displays HTML mail in an Internet Explorer window for those times
you must see an entire graphical message.)
TB’s plug-ins now finally have a real use outside of antivirus: antispam. There are a
few third-party antispam modules (most Bayesian) available, along with downloadable
mailboxes filled with thousands of junk-mail messages to quickly train them.
I found these as good as Apple’s junk mail filters—high praise, indeed.
TB is a little expensive ($35) in the face of free email programs, but
if you live and die by email, you’ll find it a bargain."

My Bayesian filter (a SpamPal plug-in) does mark such messages as spam and a
TB filter does file such messages in a suspect folder.

Though as a rule I do try hard to avoid such drastic actions I was hoping to
send THESE messages straight to the trash.

Thanks for the info above. I thought my TB! viewer did not recognize HTML at

I only wish that it was documented in the Help file so that clicking
on help in the program would tell you what the heck "Start program

This isn't a bug. It's a feature. Under General Preferences, there is
an option to "Start program after system halt." Modifying the RunOnce
registry key allows The Bat! to do this. To stop modifying the
registry, turn this behavior off by unchecking the box.

TB problem with PC Mag StartUp Cop

2004-01-07 Thread Bill Blinn Technology Editor
I recently upgraded to 2.02.3 CE and have observed an odd new
"feature". Whenever I start TB, it attempts to add an entry to the
Registry (run once).

I'm using StartUp Cop Pro from PC Magazine to monitor changes to the
Registry's start-up keys and to the StartUp folder. When TB attempts
to do this, StartUp Cop steps in to ask what I'd like to do. I've
tried allowing it, disallowing it, enabling it, disabling it, and
ignoring it. The results are always the same. I've not encountered
this problem with any of the other 40 or so applications StartUp Cop
is tracking.

POSSIBLE solution: I disabled StartUp Cop and let TB start. Then I
closed TB, started StartUp Cop again, and ran TB. This time it didn't
trigger a warning from StartUp Cop.

Anybody else using this little PC Mag utility? If so, have you seen
problems with TB?

Thanks Marck, I will do that today. This may not be useful, but just
now, there was a message that I *know* had a Word attachment because I
viewed it away from my desk.

At my desktop, I saw the message in The Bat and it indicated an

Ok. Try this: Look at the very bottom of the reply window. You'll see

I don't know what 'matter' is for but you shouldn't need it.

That worked. Your mail is properly threaded.

The message-id is created by the bat! It identifies your mail to be used
in references headers when people reply to your mail. No need to do
anything on your side, least of all put it in the 'matter' header.

m> And I stuck in the Return Path for good measure.

That one should be created by the server. So again: no need for you to
do anything.

There is no "Follow-up" on my View menu. It does, under Headers, in
the main account view menu, let me put References among other things,
including something called Matter. And also, the View menu in the Edit
Mail Message window and the Folder Window where I read your original
message, gives me these same choices.

So I copied the References and put them in the proper place.
In the Edit Mail Message window there was no place for ID--because no

It is right, that for TB! one cookie is one line in the cookie.txt, so
you *must* put everything in one line, no matter, how many lines you
want. For a line break type \n where you want it to occur, or use the
%Wrapped macro as Patrick suggested.

Like Thomas said, ACCOUNT.QTN; you need to watch out for QT's that
you've set to share with other accounts though, as you will get error
messages if you have even just one of those and switch between the
accounts with the duplicates.

I myself prefer building QT's that are as account-independant as
possible and just set all of them as 'shared' which makes them
available to all accounts without having to copy over anything.

I'm not at my home system right no so relying on memory here ;)

I run my cookie through a wrap macro (I think wrap2)
ie %wrap2=%cookie"cookiefile"

I also had to format my cookiew file so each cookie was separated by a blank
line and no cookie lines had a CR at the end.

Hope that helps. If I don't see a better answer when I get home I'll post the
specific line from my templates.

It can be done with "Replied filters" for messages you reply to, I don't
know if it works for forwarded messages also. However, you have to take
into account that if your reply to messages in different folder, you
will need a Replied filter for each "Source folder". In my case I only
need one filter because all my messages pending a reply have been

I'm familiar with the messages you're describing. I don't think it is
a filter problem. The problem is that what appears to be plain text is
actually text interspersed with numerous (usually bogus) html tags. So
you're filtering on "banned" which is what is visible, but what's
actually in the source is "banned".

The filter doesn't ignore the html tags. And since the tags are
randomly placed and can be made up of anything, it's near to
impossible to write a filter specifically for it. Take a look at the
source of the message (F9) and see if these tags are interspersed
throughout the message.

Your best bet to filter this type of spam is to use the spam
plug-in(s) or Popfile or something similar - a Bayesian filter that
"learns" as spammers come up with new tricks.

Mark msg read after writing reply?

2004-01-07 Thread Gerard
Hi Bat Users,

Does anyone know how to mark the original msg read when you have written a reply or
have forwarded the msg.

I am in the habit of marking msg´s read manually. Which is usually
after I have written a reply or forwarded the mgs.
Is there no template command I can use?

You-re comparing numbers as strings, don't you? :) Use %IFN instead of
%IF (don't even ask, this is not quite documented, AFAIK).

Nick, I have not been able to Post to the lists for days now, because
I could only send from a webmail site on which my return name&address
was different from the one I use for the TB! mailing lists. Since I
hoped the situation would not be permanent, I did not want to make a
change on the mailing lists--I hated not being able to write using TB!

Now I think the inability to Send SMTP is solved, by setting up a new
account in TB!, using the domain numbers rather than domain name of my
server. I can now Send from that account. It's complicated--I'll
describe further if anyone wants to hear--but essentially (as telnet
showed) the SMTP server's domain configuration cache became corrupted,
either on my machine or at my ISP.

However, the situation is such that I can only receive (POP3) through
my really-old POP server, vipdirect.net, with that old user name and
password. When I try to reconfigure the old account, TB! will not let
me change that old password.

In the new account, the POP server has to be configured to the same
domain as the SMTP, or the SMTP won't work.

In the old account, apparently because the POP password can't be
changed, I can't send using my correct SMTP server's numbers.

SO: I create a Reply window, with quoted message in old account Mary
Bull. Then I create a New message window in new account marybull. Then
I c&p message body, subject:, and to: fields to the New window.

I proceed in the New window to my answer, and from marybull I'm able
to Send.

Of course, I hate this. And it's probably messing up everyone's
threading as well as Replies.

I will try out Any Ideas!! I have learned to keep careful handwritten
notes so I can backtrack from anything that doesn't work.

Just call me Mary-the-Perpetual-E-mail-Using-Beginner!

Sorry for any difficulties I'm causing any of you on tbudl.

"Kludges" is the TB word for "Message headers only". So it won't
work the way you're expecting. TB's signal strings are case
insensitive by default. You have to go out of your way (please refer
to the Help topic on the Sorting Office and signal strings for the
full explanation) to make strings case sensitive.

Filter not working as expected

2004-01-07 Thread rich gregory
Hello Batters!

In trying to trash a spate of like minded emails I made a filter that seems
to have no effect but I would think it should.

The text in the body of the email varies slightly from message to message
BUT there are a few words common to all suitable for filtering on.

The offending target text is always something like:

Banned CD! Government don't want me to sell it.

The (edited) text version of my filter is below.

QUESTION: Why doesn't it work?!

BeginFilter
Name: Banned CD 1
Active: 1
Source: \\mailbox\Inbox
Target: \\mailbox\Trash
CopyFolder: none
MainSet: 30banned
MainSet: 40gov
MainSet: 30want
MainSet: 30sell

Thanks,
Rich

THAT'S what I did wrong. It doesn't work if you use CTRL-C to copy.

With the filter highlighted, you have to select COPY from the context menu or
use CTRL-Y to get the text version of the filter into the clipboard.
