So I'm no expert, but my fist test is always to use telnet to see
what's going on - 'cos that's how I used to do it years ago :-)

Have a Google for "telnet pop" for all the gory details, but you
should be able to knock out a quick session like this:

telnet 110

user
pass
LIST - list you message headers
RETR # - to view a message number #
DELE # - to delete message
QUIT - to exit

Perhaps you'll get a message that you can post back here and someone
clever can come up with a fix?

Good luck,

Is it always like this? Can you try sending a message to this

If it is still not working it may be part of the problem. Is it a

There is a text named: "How to read Cyrillic texts on the Internet and send by

I don't know if this applies to Russian, too, but if I %include a text file
in Windows-1250 encoding in the template, it's automatically translated to
iso-8859-2 when I start a new message - so try saving your signature as
Windows-1251, and setting the default charset to KOI8-R.

Check it out on http://liquidninja.com/metapad/

Or maybe you could be interested in sligtly bigger but powerful TextEd
Short review: http://www.varnus.com/site/products/texted/index.htm

CR> In Windows 98 I had it renamed notepad.exe too. But in XP I can't.

This is what it says in the Metapad's FAQ (and it worked for me):

Q: How do I replace notepad under Windows XP?
A: System File Protection is in full effect. This is what worked for
me (but not many others):

Locate the filelist.xml file in the WINDOWS\system32\Restore folder
and back up a copy of it. Open this file in Notepad and look in this
section:

%windir%\system.ini
%windir%\tasks\desktop.ini
%windir%\win.ini
*:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
*:\CONFIG.MSI
*:\CONFIG.SYS

Add the line:
%windir%\notepad.exe

to the list of Excluded files. Now you should be able to overwrite notepad.exe.

You can also try the following to get around System File Protection.
Be very quick or XP will replace the file and it won't work. Make sure
you don't have the WinXP CD-ROM in your drive!

Copy metapad renamed as Notepad.exe to the clipboard.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache
Paste the file there.
Go to C:\WINDOWS\System32 (using Backspace)
Paste the file there.
QUICKLY! Go back to C:\WINDOWS (another Backspace) and paste the file there.

If you have done this correctly, a message should pop up saying that a
bad version of a Windows System file has been installed. Make sure you
select 'Keep this file' or a similar option. If it doesn't work, keep
trying, because it will. Just do the two pastes very fast.

rem backup registry
regedit /e c:\Backup\TheBat.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!"

rem backup program and mail folder
"c:\APack\WinRAR\Rar.exe" a c:\Backup\mail.rar "c:\_aff_\TheBat"

rem create folder for current backup
md c:\Backup\%Date%

rem place files into folder
move c:\Backup\*.* c:\Backup\%Date%
==start-backup.bat===

So i use WinRAR to pack my mail folder.
Very simple.

One of the tricks is creation folder with name as current date
(md c:\Backup\%Date%)

TB! doesn't block the downloading of files with particular extensions.
All it will do is prevent their opening or warn you about opening them.
If you're unable to receive .php files, it's likely that your ISP is
filtering them or you have a local application that may be filtering
them.

[FYI] Abuse -- Spam-Reporting Software [Free]

2004-11-16 Thread David M. Dickerson
Hello, everyone.
I found a "simple program" that will help "fight
back spam," and that I thought might be useful as
a supplement to The Bat! and the BayesIt! plug-in.
The description and URL of this SourceForge.Net
project are as follows:
ABUSE: http://spam-abuse.sourceforge.net/
Introduction
Abuse is a simple program which will help you fight
back spam. It will "read" any e-mail header, go
on-line and check NICs, open relay DBs and black-
listed IP ranges to discover the address of the
abuse-desk you should write to.
Further it will tell you if the sender's IP address
is an open relay or is blacklisted as a spam source.
Simply right-click on a desired e-mail and Abuse
will automatically extract headers and either print
the relevant abuse-desks or directly e-mail them
a letter of complaint (LART).
Abuse is still in a beta phase and some of the
features we had planned have not yet been
implemented (full caching system, integration
with main e-mail clients, a more intuitive
interface...); please bear with us while we work
on improving the code
I hope that this information is of interest to the
members of TBUDL. In addition, I would appreciate
suggestions of similar or more mature software.
Thank you very much! HTH!
Cordially,
David

[Query] Truncated TBUDL Digests

2004-11-16 Thread David M. Dickerson
Hello, everyone!
Has anyone who receives TBUDL in digest format ever had
any problems with truncated (i.e., incomplete) digests?
As you can tell, I am trying to catch up on my reading
of TBUDL, which I receive in digest format, and I have
much "catching up" to do! :-)
The entire content of Volume 192, Issue 17 (7 November 2004)
is as follows (for me):
Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="===0948124342=="
 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Content-Description: TBUDL Digest, Vol 192, Issue 17
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
MIME-Version: 1.0
None of the usual text that ends each digest is present.
As I say, the text in above is the *entire* digest that
I received.
If no one else receiving TBUDL in digest format has ever
had this problem, then I will assume that the problem is
with Hotmail.com.
I should be subscribing to TBUDL using The Bat! anyway,
but my evaluation period has expired and RITLabs was
kind enough to extent the evaluation period for ten more
days. (I just had to let The Bat! automatically send a
request to RITLabs, although there is no such message in
my sent items folder.) RITLabs may offer no support to
its users, but the company wants to give you every chance
to buy its software, apparently. ;-) I mean no disrespect
to RITLabs, but I see a certain irony with this type of
discrepancy (extended evaluations versus lack of support).
I have got to reinstall Windows XP Professional and do so
soon, because I know that the operation system is corrupted
(and a hot fix that Microsoft sent me to solve the original
problem, which was very slow shutdowns, started causing
"real" problems besides slow shutdowns).
Because of the status of my OS, I have hesitated to let The
Bat! download too many messages, in case I have any problems
restoring from the backup of TB. (Of course, I am defeating
the purpose of the evaluation period, and I am also preventing
myself from finding out if Norton AntiVirus is going to start
causing problems with The Bat! after I have a substantial
number of e-mail messages and attachments. I may end up
registering The Bat!, only to have NAV wreck it.)
I apologize for rambling. I just wanted to know of corrupted
TBUDL digests were common. This one is the first truncated
digest that I have received.
Thank you very much, in advance!
Cordially,
David

Even easier:
Put your special SpamCop address in you address book with the forward

%NOSIGNCOMPLETE%-
%SUBJECT=%OSUBJECT%-
%HEADERS%-

%TEXT

Then, when you get spam, click on forward, type in SpamCop, wait for
