Re: Virtual Folder or Common Virtual Folder

Hello Marten,

Virtual Folder or Common Virtual Folder

 The difference is...???

There is no functional difference. Normal VFs are created within an
account and that's how they will appear in the folder tree (and mail
directory in disk). Common VFs are created _outside_ any account.

unencrypted voyager base?

2006-09-15 Thread SGP
Is it possible to set up voyager so that it doesn't encrypt its data and
messages?
I want to create an encrypted volume on my USB key, therefore voyager's
encryption is a duplication. I also want to look at/modify voyager's
configuration files, something I can't do if its configuration is encrypted.

I do want to run voyager instead of TB because voyager is nearly portable
--tough I read on the German forum that even voyager writes some keys to the
Registry, but hopefully that will go away in a few more revisions.

If Voyager can't be run unencrypted, can TB be run portable?

Not in the current state.

Sounds reasonable. It should be made possible to let the user choose
during the installation. Someone might file a wish on BT...

I hope so too, although these entries only relate to the spellchecker.

S If Voyager can't be run unencrypted, can TB be run portable?

The latter is probably more difficult, as The Bat! stores a lot of
settings in the registry. But then, as we see with Voyager, this isn't
impossible. For now I think, the easier way for RIT would be to allow
to install Voyager without encryption.

settings in the registry. But then, as we see with Voyager, this isn't

You can set and remove reg entries, before and after use of TB. Like
with GnuPG, if you remember.

Thus in the Registry will not be left any trail, if that is the concern.

Then, you don't have to install (again) TB on a portable media. It's
enough if you copy the folder with already installed TB to it.

Then, before running TB, you just run the saved TB reg entry (the .reg)
file, to inject its settings into Registry, and after you are finished,
you run another reg file, to delete the injected settings/entry.

The only thing you would have to do is to modify slightly this reg
entry, so that it directs to the drive letter of the USB stick or any
other removable media.

So the point is that TB can run portable, and even very much portable.

The Very Much method consists of compression of executables (counting in
dll files as well), so it occupies less space. This compression is
possible with UPX program, for instance.

If you compress some older versions, 1.4 or so, then you can run TB even
from a floppy diskette. (In this case, the modified reg entry would
point to A:\ drive.)

I know this from experience. Been there, done that, scratched my head,
so to speak. ;-)

Ideally, there should be no message in the Inbox at all, as all
messages should be sorted into their respective folders. This is not
realistic for my home computer, I'm so sloppy, but at work, where
email is crutial and a couple of hundreds of mails run throught the
Inbox every day, the Inbox is empty. Compressing it is very fast.
That's why I said that the time compression needs seems to depends on
how many MB of messages are left in the folder.

If you sort all of the messages left in your Inbox into folders, and
then compress it, you should not have to wait 20 minutes but only a
fraction of a second until compression is completed.
