Think of normal e-mail messages as postcards. Encrypted e-mail
messages are letters in (really strong, tamper evident) security
envelopes.

These e-mail messages are not encrypted; they are signed. If you
inspect this message's source, you will see that there is a checksum
included. This, along with my public key, will allow you (with the
correct software) to determine whether this message has been modified
in transit (which it shouldn't have).

Encryption

2007-01-15 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello one and all,

Recently I've been exposed to information regarding the real or
imagined dangers of using Gmail from Google:

While I'm not into black helicopters as a rule, I do lean towards
lending some credence to what I've read about Google's data-mining
practices and how easily it could be subverted. It occurred to me that
perhaps that might be one reason why some people on this list seem to
use encryption, but since I'm always able to view correspondence from
this list without any decryption that I'm aware of, I'm at a loss to
understand the purpose this encryption. If I can view the email
apparently un-encrypted, where's the protection encryption supposedly
provides? Or am I completely missing the purpose of such encryption?

Enlightenment would be most appreciated.

Just so the others will know, we did test it and were able to chat,
though that is only because we both went into chat at the same time.
I'm not sure how useful chatting there really is, but it's nice to

Mainly, it was an attempt to keep some semblance of order at the top
level. I didn't want to end up with a five page lead-in page with a
bunch of stuff that could be sub-categorized.

Good question. I've never used the wiki chat myself. Just off the top
of my head, I'd have to say no just based on the fact that unless a
logged in user is in the chatroom, I'm not sure how a notification
could happen.

I just saw you log on, maybe we could test it.

Re[2]: Antispam Sniper

2007-01-15 Thread Jim Kyle
There's a filter rule in the Sniper that's disabled by default, to classify
as spam any message with attached image files. If you enable it, you should
get 100% rejection. Unfortunately it will also reject any messages from
friends or family that have attached images, unless those senders are in
the "friends" list.

Since some of my customers (not in the friends list) attach image files of
screen shots when asking for assistance, I can't use this rule -- but it
should be quite helpful to most folk.

I just started using Antispam Sniper last week based on Gunivortus's
recommendation and I'm quite impressed. For me, it is catching 100%
of the stock-touting spam you described. Frankly, I'm surprised that
between Antispam Sniper's filtering and its DNSBL list it isn't
catching more for you.

What does your log entry typically say for this kind of spam? How are
you marking it as spam?

If training fails, you can always clear the classification database
and start training over again.

Don't think so but it's a very good idea. Why not post a request in one

I think we are just in one of those stages where the spammers are
winning. I too am getting a lot more spam through with Antispam sniper
at the moment, but so is my University, who blocked over 1 million
spams in the last two weeks, but are still letting more through than
usual.

Personally, I get about 500 spam mails a day, even though thousands seem to get

Re[2]: Duplicate messages

2007-01-15 Thread James Olsen
Hello Richard,

RO> RW> Are you storing mail on the server? If not try to do so for a day.

RW> I only store it for two days anyway :-(

I've had a similar problem in the past. Once in awhile I'll get a
message that causes TheBat to not do the right thing when downloading
(the symptoms will vary, but what you described has happened before).
Usually the problem I have is a task the "Connection Centre" not
responding and never finishing.

Regardless, I also leave my POP mail on the server for a few days
before deleting it from the server.

I've found that using the "mail dispatch" function of TheBat I can go
in and manually delete the spam and that usually takes care of it.
Once in awhile I will need to delete some of the mail I've already
downloaded (turning off the "leave mail on server" option and getting
mail once will likely have the same effect). I get hundreds of emails
a day, and I've never had the time to delete them one at a time to try
to isolate the one that causes the problem, I usually delete in
batches of 100 or more until the problem goes away.

Once the offending email is gone from the server, TheBat starts
working normally again.

I'm not 100% sure TheBat is the cause of the new-mail problem; it
could be that the POP server is telling TheBat the wrong info (ie, all
messages are new). Perhaps it is because TheBat never go the chance to
tell the POP server to mark the messages as "read."

In any event, it seems like purging the messages "fixes" the immediate
problem.
