Yes, I'm also using a non-English W98 (Danish).

I'll have to retract the previous limitation to non-installed spell
checkers. Installing all the relevant language packs didn't help. The
only thing that seems to be working out is removing all %LANGUAGE

problem when using the reply-button or ctrl+F5 ?

Freeze-up once again - trackdown suggestion

I'm (at last) using The Bat! Version 1.61 under Windows 98 4.10 Build
1998 and I have been having a freeze-up problem starting with v 1.60
(mainly when replying). The behaviour is irregular, and associated
with only a few of my accounts. Furthermore, it only seems to occur
when using the buttons and shortcuts, not the menus. After some
testing, I believe that it is provoked by using a template containing
%LANGUAGE="Language ID", if "Language ID" refers to a language spell
checker which isn't installed.

Would any of you do me the favour of testing this bug out using a
template with a %LANGUAGE set to a spell checker which is not on your
system. I am interested in experience both from W98SE users and other
OS'es. I have reported my findings and had confirmation that it's a
known error, but I'd be grateful if you would help me tracking it
further down. This bug has kept me forced on 1.53 for far too long.

Hello Cricket,

Now I have set in my address-book a specific Reply template for this

Message out:

I already thanked Sudip yesterday (in an off-list message) for giving me the

Again, thanks.
Kind regards,

Hello all,

I would like to realize the following:
- Trigger on a certain e-mail (this is the easy part and I can manage this
:)
- Reply to this message but send it to another e-mail address
- Of course I would like to do this automated (via template)

Does anyone know a way of doing this, it doesn't seem to work with:
%TOADRESS = or %TONAME = in the Reply
template

Thanks in advance.

Re: Firewalls compatible with The Bat. Was: Question

2002-07-31 Thread Erik Janssen

Hello Thomas,

TF> Pardon me for being ignorant, but was does this Mail-Safe function in
TF> ZA do? What I can figure from the list, it changes attachment names,
TF> so that they cannot be opened any more. May make sense for OE/OL
TF> users, but then, how do *they* open attachments at all?

TF> Is it the job of this firewall to make attachments useless?

I might hope not! It just seems not to work well for everybody who
uses it or not everybody uses it correct.

According to the help-file of ZA it should do the following:
(sorry for the gigantic message!)

/-[ MailSafe Setting ]-
| Use the radio buttons to turn MailSafe on or off.
|
| If On is selected, the attachment types configured in the
| Attachments panel will be quarantined.
| If Off is selected, no attachments will be quarantined
\-

/-[ E-mail protection ]-
| ZoneAlarm Pro's MailSafe™ feature protects you from new viruses,
| worms, and other malware distributed in e-mail attachments. It also
| protects you from any old, known threats.
|
| The problem with attachments
| Attaching files to e-mail messages is a convenient way of exchanging
| information.
|
| However, it also provides hackers with an easy way of spreading
| viruses, worms, Trojan horse programs, and other malware. For
| example, the infamous "Love Bug" worm was distributed as a Visual
| Basic Script (.VBS) file
|
| Fortunately, only certain types of attachments can contain
| potentially dangerous code. These attachments types can be
| identified by their filename extensions.
\-

/-[ About filename extensions ]-
| Filename extensions are the characters that appear after the "dot"
| in a file name. They identify the file type so that the appropriate
| program or system component can open it. Here are some examples:
| .EXE (an executable file)
| .JS (a javascript file)
| .BAT (a batch process file)
|
| Tip It's a good idea never to open an e-mail attachment unless you
| know the person it came from, and have confirmed (by phone or
| separate e-mail message) that that person actually sent it to you.
| Remember hackers can alter an e-mail message to look like it came
| from a friend!
\-

/-[ The MailSafe quarantine ]-
| ZoneAlarm Pro's MailSafe protects you by 'quarantining' e-mail
| attachments that may contain malicious code.
| When an e-mail with an attachment arrives...
| MailSafe examines the attachment's filename extension.
|
| If that extension (in the example at right, .BAT) is in MailSafe's
| quarantine list, ZoneAlarm Pro changes the filename extension to
| ".zl*" (where * is a number or letter.)
|
| Changing the filename extension 'quarantines' the attachment by
| keeping it from running automatically.
|
| When you open the e-mail containing the attachment...
| ZoneAlarm Pro displays a MailSafe alert to let you know it has
| quarantined the attachment. Click OK to close the alert box.
|
| When you try to open the attachment...
| ZoneAlarm Pro warns you of the potential risk in opening the
| attachment. If you're sure the file is harmless and you want to open
| it, click the Run button. You can also save the file for later.
|
| Tip Users who know how to read code can click Inspect with Notepad
| to examine the code of attachment itself.

Erik

Hi Sudip, Avram,

I use Zone Alarm Pro (as fas as I know the latest version) and do
_not_ have any problems that I am aware of. My OS is Windows XP
Professional and I am using McAfee Total Virus Defence with it (also
without _any_ problems).

What I do remember (you are also referring to that) is some renaming
of attachments (the file extentions). When I disabled the Mail-Safe
settings everything worked fine at my system. Might have a look at
home this evening to check my settings and what changes if a play
something with Mail-Safe. The only thing I know (which is confirmed in
a Dutch PC magazine) is that ZA loads very slow and is more then a
minute slower than another FW (forgot the name).

F4 produces the exact same error.

I was even reformatting my entire system and installing 1.60c as
(almost) the first application just to make sure it wasn't due to some
muck-up with my system.

Only difference is one account produces an access violation and the

To me it would seem 1.53 was as good as it gets, but I suppose there

Things were normal for me as well after my first re-install of 1.60 -
until I started deleting known-inbox folders again. Now, things are
bad every time I try to upgrade. Funny thing is that the sprinkling of
known-inboxes over my 3 accounts are entirely random - and adding

before I manually do.

I'm not following you here, but it doesn't seem like anything I did
anyway. Contrarily, my 2 simple accounts with a minimum of filters and
fancy templates are the ones which act up and my most heavily
power-used account is the one which remains fine.

I wonder if it is simply not all that NT/XP testing environment which

Reply freezes up Bat on some accounts

2002-03-26 Thread Lars Erik Bryld

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I am really at my wits' end here, and I am slightly irked to see that
nobody apparently have experienced the same problem. An ill foreboding
to be sure... :o(

I have 3 accounts set up in my system and moved from 1.53bis to 1.60.
I then immediately deleted the known-filters (as I remember it, I
could) and -folders. Initially, I only noticed a known-inbox in one of
my accounts, but known-filters in all 3.

One of my 3 accounts worked flawlessly, but with both the other 2
accounts any use of the reply-button constantly produced an
incompletely rendered edit-window and a freeze-up forcing me to
terminate the program separately from ctrl-alt-del.

Having replaced my the_bat.exe v 1.53bis with 1.60 (doh) I was forced
to acquire the 1.53t rar from the beta-page and replace with that.
Everything worked nicely again (a label-mangled known-inbox folder
appeared at the well-working account and was deleted along with other
unwanted enhancements of the known-type, as you can delete all filters
including known-types with 1.53 versions).

Today I reinstalled 1.60 and discovered all accounts were working fine
reply-wise. I only had the known-inbox added to one of the accounts,
but known-filters in all 3 (the other two filtering to the ordinary
inbox). Now filter deletion was no (longer?) an option, but I
redirected the filter to the ordinary inbox and deleted the
known-inbox folder again.

Guess what happened...

Two accounts working fine, the last freezing up on attempts to reply
through the button.

Back to restoring 1.53t, now finding the filters disappearing in the
process with no need to delete anything.

And of course I seem to be the only one to have experienced this
(judging from a quick browse through tbudl and tbbeta).

As long as documentation for the 1.60 version is lacking, I don't
really feel I'm missing anything, but It's kinda frustrating anyway. I
don's see any option for repairing broken account indices which I
suspect might account for some of my problems.

I'm using Win98SE, BTW.

Sincerely

Confirm sending bug?

2001-07-30 Thread Erik

Hello TBUDL,

With TB! set to "confirm immediate sending", using the "send" toolbar
button doesn't confirm sending of a message as expected. However,
using ctrl-enter or message menu/send now does bring up a confirmation

The relevant settings are:

Account properties - transport - immediate selected
Account properties - options - message editor settings - confirm
immediate sending checked.

Not necessarily. On this end, frequent use of the mouse is

I understand that I can copy, alt-tab to a browser, move the focus to

Perhaps TB! could parse the url's one at a time, similar to Forte
Agent. Or maybe moving the cursor to the url and pressing enter, or
some other key combination. Anyway, it was just a thought. It just
seems odd to have to use the mouse just for launching url's, while

I believe it is presently impossible (at least it appeared so when I
asked the same question myself. I tried changing the setting to have
attachments be stored in a separate folder, but HTML-attachments seem
to be treated differently from normal ones.

I haven't gotten around to put in on the official wish list yet.

I forgot to mention that I mainly answer him on a mailing list, but
using %QUOTESTYLE="AbofromHANDLE" did the trick. I do have a problem
with one of the other subscribers, because he has a few quotation
marks in his fromline and that seems to confuse the program.

Thanks for pointing the macro out to me. I still tend to overlook the
ones not present in the menu options.

Very long initial strings

2001-01-07 Thread Lars Erik Bryld

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Dear Batters

I have the reply options set to use initials in quotations, which I
prefer in most cases

My friend (same one who's using HTML) also uses a very long form of
his name, which lead my replies to him to

HPPIRoC> be quoted like this.

Not only does the auto-colouring of quoted text balk at such a long
string of initials, it is generally annoying too, so I usually do a
manual search and replace with the much more convenient HCH.

The option to alter quote-mode is not available in specific
address-book templates, but do I have other options to make the
substitution automatically?

Please, don't just tell me to get more sensible friends ;o)

Problem is, I get most of his mail through a mailing list, and no one
else seems to mind (even if he is the only one using HTML).

What I can't understand is why the filter action didn't work the way
I'd have expected. Of course there are several explanations, not all
fully tested:

1) HTML are a different sort of attachment (alternative versus mixed
or some such)

2) I shouldn't have tried to direct it to the trash folder (probably
wouldn't have auto-purged anyway, not being messages but files and
all)

My previous mail client (Eudora Pro 4) automatically stripped the
superfluous message copy, but guess which version it considered
superfluous ;o)

I have tried to use the filter action "extract attached files to the

fellow sending me mails in multipart/alternative format, and I'd love
to have that HTML-part ditched with a minimum of manual effort. Any

CSAPI ignored

2000-12-21 Thread Lars Erik Bryld

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Dear Bat-users.

I have a Danish Office97 with spell checkers in Danish and English.
For some reason I cannot get the English checker to work. It displays
as a menu option, but when selected, it greys out and no checking is
performed. This behaviour is only seen with the English CSAPI, while
its Danish counterpart works fine. The components of the intpack works
fine, too, so ATM I use the intpack English checker and the Office97
Danish checker. Removing the intpack components doesn't alter things.

I would have liked to use the CSAPI's for both languages, because they
allow me to remove words as well as add words. That is useful for
permitted variant spellings, where I usually prefer to be consistent.

I'm using 1.48f on a W2K (Danish) system.

Well, that was one of our major conserns when establishing a web-based
forum. I myself like tbudl and tbbeta very much, but I have also felt
the need for a web-based forum.

We do not want to compete with the fabolous mailinglists, but to
create an alternative discussion forum for those who don't like
mailinglists.

TBUDL (in special) has become a high-traffic mailinglist, which is
excellent for many of us, but I know of quite a few people who don't
want to use their mailbox for these kinds of discussion, but rather
visit a website to easy look up those topics that interest _them_.

We didn't make it to compete with the mailinglists. We are not making
any money on it, we set this up only because we are big fans of
TheBat! and wanted to contribute in making the spreading of knowledge
easier for many people.

Re: Saving filter

I experienced the same problem after i upgraded from 1.36 to 1.38, but
for some reason the problem disappeared after 2-3 days... (?) I am
running TB on a standalone Win98SE...

My cousin has also the same problem, but he has had the problem since
he installed 1.38 a couple of days after the release of 1.38, and
because of this he is considering to use another email client instead.

But, unfortunately, I cannot help you. I can just confirm the bug.
