Re: Can Not Send Mail
Hi Jonathan, Thanks very much for your excellent explanation. Maybe you might want to take a look http://www.ordb.org and do a lookup on there, see if it's listed. It checks out OK: Queue status for outbox.attcanada.ca (207.245.244.41) Last added to the queue by: 205.158.67.154 Last added to the queue at: 2002-05-04 04:30 CET The server explicitly rejected all probes, and has been deemed secure by the ORDB testing engine. I would have been surprised if an outfit as large as ATT had been rejected, but one never knows. I don't personally think it is a TB issue itself... more of an issue with the ISP setup. I have switched to sending emails to my colleague's university address... a solution that works, but doesn't fix the problem. I didn't feel as though the tech support individual had a vast depth of knowledge, although it was deeper than mine :-) They probably won't get a lot of complaints if it's restricted to TB! users. -- Regards, Mike Using The Bat! 1.60q under Windows 98 4.10 Build A = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Mike Harlos Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada PGP Keys: DH/DSS- 0x8CD85BCERSA- 0xBBDB40B1 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Current Ver: 1.60q FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/
Re: A good tool: Win32.Klez worm sent by me via The Bat!?
Hello Peter, Thanks very much for your reply. First: if TB! would have sent this message it will resist in your 'Sent' folder. Have a look there ... (Albeit I can't believe TB! has been sent it, have a look to be sure). I believe you are correct.. it was not in my sent folder. I have been looking for more information on this worm and I read on alt.comp.virus that it forges the From header, making it look as though it came from an individual. Second: You write you're not _using_ Outlook. Do you have it installed anyway and maybe some aeons ago configured to work properly? Does Outlook (if installed) or Outlook Express have knowledge about your account data (name, e-mail-address, SMTP-server)? Outlook had been installed when my laptop was initially configured by the computer folks at work. I've never actually started it up or configured it; I've used TB! for a few years. You have written 'There was no attachment from me.' ... does that mean the recipient had no attachment in the mail? If so there's no 'Klez' issue we could talk about, as 'Klez' is spreading itself and not sending empty messages :-) She originally indicated that there was no attachment, and upon reexamining it in her trash folder (of her Outlook program), said there was one. She deleted it without taking note of its name or extension. To come to an end: I'd suggest updating the signature file and re-scan your whole system again. Installing a second AV-software would be also a good idea, in case there's a new variant of Klez around NAV has not yet in the signature file. Thanks. I registered KAV (because of its integration with TB!), and scanned my system. It identified Exploit.IFrame.FileDownload in the trash folder of TB! (I had deleted the message that she had sent me, which had a copy of the original message that I was alleged to have sent her). Interestingly, I had set KAV to delete infected files, and it deleted all the messages in the trash (not a huge problem obviously, but I usually keep 5000 messages there). -- Regards, Mike Using The Bat! 1.60d under Windows 98 4.10 Build A = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Mike Harlos Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada PGP Keys: DH/DSS- 0x8CD85BCERSA- 0xBBDB40B1 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Current Ver: 1.60c FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
A good tool: Win32.Klez worm sent by me via The Bat!?
Hi, A colleague of mine has just received a message from me (without my knowledge of sending it) which appears to be related to the Win32.Klez worm. There was no attachment from me. How could this happen with TB? I don't use Outlook, and I thought that this worm exploited Outlook. I am VERY vigilant about attachments, and have TB! set up to not allow opening of *.COM,*.EML,*.CMD,*.JS,*.PL,*.BAS,*.JAVA,*.REG, *.EXE,*.VBS,*.PIF,*.SCR,*.SHS files. Andrew Lovetski provided this insight (taken from the archives): Begin Quote from Andrew So, your problem is as follows: When a file is double-clicked in TB, TB performs Open command. Hence, WinWord is fired up with your file. When a file is double-clicked in Explorer, the Default command is executed (WordView in your case). Work-around: go to File Types dialog (in explorer), create a new command Open with Word and copy all stuff from Open command to Open with Word command (that is just create a copy of Open command - AFAIR, explorer won't let you rename the Open command). Then associate the Open command with WordView - that is copy all stuff from WordView command into the corresponding fields of Open command. Now the Open command will fire up WordView, and to open a file in Word you'll have to use the command Open with Word. Oh, and don't forget to keep the files with exported parts of your registry. Just double-click them to restore the system to the previous state, in case if smth goes wrong... HTH and Good luck... A question to TBUDLers: Should TB use the Default command (as configured on user's system) when double-clicking a file, or should it just open the file (that is always use the Open command)? Opinion: Blind Copy emails should warn / not allow reply to original recipient
Hi, I have noticed that many people in the typical office environment do not grasp some of the more subtle aspects of "email common-sense". Here's an example that could be addressed by The Bat! (and other email clients): Suppose I sent an email to Mr. X that John, Steve, and Susan should be aware of, but the "politics" of the situation would strongly favour that Mr. X does not know that they receive copies... consequently I send a "Blind Copy" to them. However, Steve has an important point to make, so he does a "Reply to All" in order to reach me, John, and Susan. Like most people, he won't look at the headers and doesn't see that his reply also went to Mr. X. Disaster. I would suggest that email clients produce a warning to say something like: Caution! You have included [EMAIL PROTECTED] as a recipient of this reply. You were sent a Blind Copy of an email sent to him/her. Are you sure that you want to do this? Just my opinion; I feel that there is a potential for problems with the current process, in which a "Reply to all" includes the original/main recipient of the email of which you received a Blind Copy -- Regards, Mike Using The Bat! 1.48f under Windows 98 4.10 Build A = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Mike Harlos Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada PGP Keys: DH/DSS- 0x8CD85BCERSA- 0xBBDB40B1 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = -- -- View the TBUDL archive at http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com To send a message to the list moderation team double click here: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe from TBUDL, double click here and send the message: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- You are subscribed as : archive@jab.org

Re: TB! Version 1.45 and Version 1.45 S/MIME
Hi Gerd, I d/l TB ! 1.45 from Ritlabs (www.ritlabs.com) and realize that there is no S/MIME available in my version (see below for version). I then checked this mailinglist and found out that there are some Version 1.45 S/MIME (Nick Andriash, Thomas Fernandez and other for example) and some 1.45 (David Buntenbroich, John Rainer, Enrique S. Moreno and others I assume). The S/MIME functionality was a "work in progress" throughout the 1.45 beta phase, and my understanding is that it remains so to some degree. I had first thought that the 1.45 release version wasn't going to have S/MIME, but quite likely so many folks were having fun figuring it out that 1.45 was released in "regular" and S/MIME flavours. I had seen the suggestion (Curtis?) that it would be best to download the regular 1.45 first (the one you're using), in order to obtain the updated help files etc. You can then download the S/MIME version (tb145sm.zip, which is just an executable inside the zip) and install on top of it. I thought that it must be an install program, full of all the other program files (help files etc), but that is not the case. Why the increased executable size? -- Regards, Mike Using The Bat! 1.42c under Windows 95 4.0 Build 950 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Mike Harlos Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada PGP Keys: DH/DSS- 0xB64F63B6RSA- 0xC361561F = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = -- -- View the TBUDL archive at http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com To send a message to the list moderation team double click here: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe from TBUDL, double click here and send the message: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- You are subscribed as : archive@jab.org
Problem with attachments from Novell Groupwise
Hi, I've had a problem with attachments sent from the Novell Groupwise system at my workplace. I don't work in the computer field, so please bear with me :-) I have all of my workplace e-mail forwarded to my Netcom account, which I can access from anywhere in the country. These messages arrive as blank messages with text attachments (*.msg) which I double-click to read. However, occasionally someone sends a WordPerfect or Word document in addition to the message. Using the Bat!, I still see a *.msg file, with a size notation such as 30,000 bytes. However, double-clicking the attachment yields an empty screen...no associated text message or accompanying word processor file. Now it gets confusing: If I forward the "blank" message to myself from the Bat!, it arrives back to me as a text file with the huge list of recipients from work, followed by the text message that was sent (such as "here's the agenda for the meeting"), followed by a UUENCODED section which is a *.doc file (the word processor document). This is all in one big message. Additionally, if I save as a text file that first *.msg file that my workplace had sent to me, I can read it in a text editor; it appears as described above, with a uuencoded section. This doesn't seem to happen if I use Calypso to read mail; it happens with the Bat!. I prefer to stay with the Bat!, however. Any suggestions?
