Re[2]: SOS -- upgrading to new machine... [UPDATE]

2002-03-29 Thread Reed Byers

UPDATE:

The whole procedure worked flawlessly. After copying my Email folders
to a safe place, I upgraded to The Bat! 1.60C on my old Win98 system
-- no problem. Then I used the Tools-Backup menu option to save
everything it possibly could. On the new system, I installed The Bat!
1.60C, and sure enough, it asked if I wanted to restore from a backup
file. I clicked Yes and voila, everything is exactly as it was, only
on my new system and with an upgraded Bat.

My thanks to all who responded so quickly; especially to Dierk Haasis
and Allie C Martin, whose recommended procedure saved me so much
hassle.

I haven't installed ZoneAlarm yet -- if I do, and there's any
problems, I'll let everyone know.

(Now if only the new Bat implemented a bound cursor option in the
Email editor, my life would truly be complete...)

UPDATED UPDATE:

Oops. Just as I went to send this, I realized my personal address
book did not get imported with everything else. Should I simply
locate and copy the address book files from my previous Bat directory,
or is there a better way? Thanks again!

DH 1. I think TB!'s message base format was changed somewhere around
DH 1.46 to 1.49. It may be a good idea to first make that upgrade to
DH not loose any messages.

DH 2. Somewhere during the 1.5x series a good backup/restore was added
DH especially for such tasks as yours. So another point to make an
DH upgrade before changing machines.

I concur with these two points whole heartedly. I just migrated from
 using a 400Mhz desktop running Win2k to a 1.3Ghz laptop running WinXP. I
had to do exactly what you wish to, though my running version of TB! was
 more current.

 I'd do the following:

 a) Backup your current installation and then do an upgrade of your
current installation to the current one. Only if it's working well
should you proceed with the rest of the steps. Otherwise, restore your
old installation, and we can discuss how to transfer it to your new
 system.

If you've successfully upgraded you can do the following:

 a) Go to the Tools menu and select 'Backup'. Tick all the items there,
select 'Standard' backup and hit the 'browse' to indicate where you wish
the backup file to be placed and the name you wish to give it. Now run
 the backup.

 b) On the new machine, install TB! v1.60c. You may be asked if you wish
to restore a from a backup during this installation (new feature that I
haven't personally seen in action). If so, then give it the backup file
to work with and you're done.

If not, not to worry. Do what I had to do. :-) Just continue with the
installation, create an account as instructed (and which you'll delete
after restoring your installation). When you're finished with that part
go to the tools menu and select 'restore'. Add your backup file and tick
all the items at the bottom and go.

SOS -- upgrading to new machine...

2002-03-28 Thread Reed Byers

U, I'm sure this sort of thing gets asked a thousand times, and
I'm sorry for asking again, but...

Tonight, I will be replacing my current Win98 300-MHz machine with a
new WinXP 1.8GHz machine. I'm currently running The Bat! 1.46c (yes,
its registered; no, I've never done an upgrade since registering).

I'd like to install the latest Bat! on the new WinXP box and somehow
transfer all of my folders, rules/filters, preferences, address books
etc. to it as painlessly as possible.

I'll have the hard drives from the old machine connected to the new
one long enough to do data transfers, but I don't plan to have both
machines running simultaneously.

Could some kind soul give me a step-by-step to do this? How much is
possible without touching the registry?

Will it automatically register itself when I transfer the Email msg
containing my Bat! registration, or do I need to register manually? Do
I need to enter the registration code before moving all my folders
etc?

Also, what pitfalls should I be aware of? I've been running ZoneAlarm
along with The Bat! on my Win98 machine without trouble, but I read
the new Bat! may be allergic to it? Any help or advice would be
appreciated. Thanks!

Introduction and (yup!) newbie questions...

2000-09-23 Thread Reed Byers

Greetings!

My name's Reed; I'm a 32-year-old Systems Analyst working for Oregon
State University. A week ago, I began my search for "the perfect
Windows Email client" -- after six years, the chaos and expense of
keeping all my mail in PINE on my ISP's server had finally become too
much for me -- and found my way to "The Bat!"

I've been reading the on-line archives of this mailing list for a
week, and you guys impressed me so much, I dove in and registered it
yesterday. I *LOVE* the advanced features I'm seeing; I have no doubt
that this is the right program for me.

HOWEVER... like every other newbie, I *DO* have some questions.

1) In the editor, is there any way to "bind" my cursor to the text? In
other words, when I get to the end of a line, I REALLY want
"cursor-right" to wrap to the next line. If I wanted to add text off
the edge on the right, I'd use the space bar to get there. Likewise,
moving the cursor up or down to a shorter line should cause it to pop
left to the end of the line, rather than just sitting where no text
is.

2) When I select an unread message (and it shows up in the preview
pane), within a few seconds it gets marked as READ. Now, I don't EVER
want a message marked READ unless I open it, or mark it myself. After
some investigating, I've found the setting under my account's
Properties that says "Time of reading to mark a message as read", and
sure enough, a big enough number here does the trick. But now, it
won't even mark a message READ when I open the message! Do I have to
create a filter to do what I want here?

Thanks in advance!
