UPDATE:

The whole procedure worked flawlessly. After copying my Email folders
to a safe place, I upgraded to The Bat! 1.60C on my old Win98 system
-- no problem. Then I used the Tools->Backup menu option to save
everything it possibly could. On the new system, I installed The Bat!
1.60C, and sure enough, it asked if I wanted to restore from a backup
file. I clicked "Yes" and voila, everything is exactly as it was, only
on my new system and with an upgraded Bat.

My thanks to all who responded so quickly; especially to Dierk Haasis
and Allie C Martin, whose recommended procedure saved me so much
hassle.

I haven't installed ZoneAlarm yet -- if I do, and there's any
problems, I'll let everyone know.

(Now if only the new Bat implemented a "bound" cursor option in the
Email editor, my life would truly be complete...)

UPDATED UPDATE:

Oops. Just as I went to send this, I realized my personal address
book did not get imported with everything else. Should I simply
locate and copy the address book files from my previous Bat directory,
or is there a better way? Thanks again!
