Strange error at startup
I often, but not always, get a FETCH error when TheBat! performs its first check for new mail when I start it up in the morning. It is configured to check automatically, so I just hear the sound that indicates an error and I find something like this in my log: 11/18/2021, 06:56:53: FETCH - receiving mail messages 11/18/2021, 06:56:53: FETCH - Connecting to POP3 server mail.$.com on port 995 11/18/2021, 06:56:53: FETCH - Initiating TLS handshake >11/18/2021, 06:56:53: FETCH - Certificate S/N: , algorithm: RSA (512 >bits), issued from 11/7/2014 1:41:42 PM to 11/2/2034 1:41:42 PM, for 1 >host(s): mail.$.com. >11/18/2021, 06:56:53: FETCH - Owner: "US", "State", "City", "Company Name, >Inc.", "email service", "mail.$.com", "postmaster@$.com". >11/18/2021, 06:56:53: FETCH - This certificate is self-issued. 11/18/2021, 06:56:53: FETCH - TLS handshake complete 11/18/2021, 06:56:53: FETCH - connected to POP3 server 11/18/2021, 06:56:54: FETCH - authenticated (plain) !11/18/2021, 06:56:55: FETCH - Server reports error. The response is: rack.us; receiver= The "rack.us" part of the example changes almost every time the error occurs. Can anyone help me to understand what is happening? I had originally suspected some sort of infection on my desktop or maybe even our mail server, but I've used several different bootable (from optical disk) scanning tools and all report both systems to be clean. Any ideas? Oh, I should mention that when I'm paying attention (like this morning when I captured this example) I click TB!'s "Receive New Mail" button on the toolbar immediately after the FETCH error is reported and TB! calmly connects to my mail server and downloads last night's mail with no issues. This error seems to happen only ONCE per run, and only on the very FIRST (automatic) attempt to "Receive New Mail" -- Steven Valliere | tb 9.4.4 | mailto:the...@e-visions.com -- "If you didn't write it down, then it didn't happen." -Larry Zana Current version is 9.1.18 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: FETCH - Server Reports Error
Sigh... I guess no one has a clue what this could be. This morning's version of the bizarre was this message: !9/1/2021, 07:20:17: FETCH - Server reports error. The response is: .com (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 7D39A17E02C9 FWIW, when the session works normally, the message that would show in place of the gibberish above is something like this: 9/1/2021, 07:25:17: FETCH - 11 messages in the mailbox, 11 new As one may notice, that was the very next query to the server. One difference between this and the previous message (aside from the nonsense text part) is that I did NOT reboot the whole computer. This time I had only started TheBat! Regardless, it appears that the first check after TheBat! starts always fails with a message like this, where the "server response" is some nonsense that was never sent by the server. Since it goes away on the second attempt to fetch mail, I suppose that no one cares, but as a programmer myself, I'm always concerned with what /ELSE/ may be affected by whatever is causing this issue. Oh well, I reported it. I've only been paying for all of the updates for the past 20 years, so my reports are probably worthless. FETCH - Server Reports Error
I am very curious about this message from TheBat!'s log: !7/6/2021, 07:36:26: FETCH - Server reports error. The response is: e (web3.networkexchange.de [82.165.112.102]) It appeared when TheBat! was first started after powering on my computer this morning. I'm guessing that this may be part of some sort of check for a product update that TheBat! does at startup, but if so, a more meaningful message would be GREATLY appreciated. If not, can anyone explain what is going on? Thanks! Your steps worked and for me, the restart was required. Of course now I have a bogus address at the bottom of the list, but I guess I can live with that until this is fixed. Yeah, I know the problem has been around for literally YEARS and multiple MAJOR version numbers of TheBat!, but I can dream, can't I? New Mail Drop List Broken Again
The drop-list of favorites from my address book that should appear when I click the down arrow just to the right of the "Create a New Message" button has vanished again. It has been replaced by the "Quick templates" drop-down that looks EXACTLY like the one that displays from the REPLY button. (See attached image) It was working perfectly until I added a new person to my address book, who is the first person in a new group. When I set the group to "Add items to the instant address popup", the drop list changed into the quick template list and I cannot get it to go back the way it was. I even tried deleting the new address and group (after unchecking the "add items..." thing and trying that first) without success. Is there a way to get the dro-list to show my favorite addresses and groups again? Thousands of .MSG files?
This is probably easy to fix, but I've not been able to locate a setting for it anywhere... Sometime before I upgraded to tb3.01 (but while I was trying out beta versions of tb2.xx) I started getting large numbers of .MSG files in my 'attachments' folder. (A) Can I safely delete these without losing the bodies of messages I want to save? (B) If not, how do I tell The Bat! to keep the bodies with the messages instead of on disk? (C) If so, then how do I tell The Bat! to stop crapping on my disk drive? If no one's noticed, explorer isn't very fast when there are 20,000+ files in a folder... (and before you ask, yes, I get far, far too much SPAM). -- Steven P Valliere <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Current version is 3.0.1.33 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
TB3 Still (slightly) Broken on Multi-Monitor Systems
I just upgraded to TB 3.0.1.33 Pro yesterday and discovered that it still has the same column sizing bugs that TB2 had when running on a monitor with negative X (horizontal) coords. Any attempt to resize a column while TB is running on the 'left' monitor (relative to the primary monitor) causes the column width to instantly go to ZERO. This really shouldn't be a problem for anyone capable of basic arithmetic, but apparently someone at RIT (or the place they bought the interface libraries, if they did) isn't. What's the proper procedure for getting this BUG onto the list of bugs that RIT is working on fixing? Or at least onto the list of bugs that they know about? -- Steve V Current version is 3.0.1.33 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

I have three physical monitors attached to three physical video cards (AGP GeForce 2/MX, PCI Diamond Viper 550, PCI 3Dfx Banshee) and use the multi-monitor capability that is built in to Windows 2000 (which is also in WinME and WinXP). I write Windows software for a living and I can say with assurance that applications that have no idea there is more than one screen simply haven't checked. There are standard system calls to get the number, size, resolution, color depth, etc. of every active display. There is probably a call to determine the layout of the displays, too, but I haven't needed that one yet. >> And since I use TB2, I doubt it will ever be fixed because >> I get a strong impression that v2 has been abandoned. (B) Upgraded (for FREE) to the next supported version. Re: The Bat and Dual Monitors instability
admin, I also use TB (v2) on a multi-monitor (3) configuration. The problem occurs on screens configured to be physically to the LEFT of the primary monitor. As a software developer myself, I am reasonably certain that the program is not coded to do the math necessary for handling the sizing operation correctly when the coordinates are less than zero. The top left pixel on the primary monitor is at (0,0), if your second monitor is to the left of the primary and set to 1024x768 resolution, its top left pixel would then be at (-1024,0). Then you resize in TB, it sees values less than zero, even though the difference, correctly computed would be GREATER than zero. A typical defense against drawing things backwards (due to negative lengths) is to force such values to zero. When I wish to resize columns, I must remember to move TB to the primary monitor (or my right-hand screen). Sizing on the left-hand screen is broken. And since I use TB2, I doubt it will ever be fixed because I get a strong impression that v2 has been abandoned. RIT wants us to pay for v3 to get features we neither need nor want in order to get bug fixes to v2 that haven't even been implemented. Sigh. -- SteveV Current version is 3.00.00 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
