W They make money on it or they would't do it, simple as that.

So you get up for work every day, do a hard days work whatever it
is and you don't expect to get paid for it?

Ok, if you read what is written, I did not judge if making money in
this statement was a good thing or not, simply stating the fact that
money was being made or they wouldn't be doing it, you read into it
that I was saying making money on it was bad. *evil grin*

What really fascinates me is the amount of people who want
everything for nothing regardless of the cost to anyone else.

Fact is you don't actually have to pay for software anymore if you
really don't want to because there are hacks and cracks out there for
pretty much anything, including TB. Realizing this, any paid for
software is voluntary even if it's not shareware to anyone that wants
to become aware and doesn't have issues with such things.

I don't expect anything for nothing, if I like something I pay for
it. If I can get something for nothing at the expense of the odd

I think the point being made here by others and now myself is not
the cost of having the odd advert to view (those are avoidable with
filters) but the privacy issues of having your private mail (not list
mail) scanned with Gmail.

I suggest this because I've found that if TB is trying to check my

is done so fast that I can't read what the screen says. Yes, it

Don't you guys use the plugin spam filter that comes with TB? I
didn't trust it when I first installed it but I have been surprised
how well it detects spam, I just let it do it's thing and occasionally
help it out with mark as spam or the reverse. 80 gets deleted and
60 goes to junk, which I glance at before exiting TB.

If you haven't tried it I highly recommend it, if you have bandwidth
issues then I understand that you don't want to download the spam.

If you just have issues with spam, I understand that too 8^)

Not me, couldn't get it work properly, never caught me any spam, so I
 picked something else.

I'd love to hear what else you picked and how you liked it. As far
as getting it working, I was very confused at first and read up on it,
once I realized it was a learning program it was easy.

Here are my assumptions:

It starts out with it's basic knowlege about spam, but each user and
the users that send to them are different so it starts with a very
safe ruleset, now you teach it. Set it up to put stuff in your junk
box only (or at least I did) and not mark them as read, I set this at
80. Then any junk mail you find in your inbox you mark as junk and
any NON junk mail you find in your junk box you mark as not junk and
move it back.

After very few emails it will sort your mail cleanly but since you
are not having the junk mail marked as read you can see what junk
mail you need to check, and what you have already gone through.

This was fairly verbose, I hope it was what you needed to get going
with BayesIt. Once you feel safe, just adjust the 'weight' and what
goes to the trash and what goes to junk to decrease the amount you
have to double check.

I trained it very little and it has been doing well. Of course I have
NO email offers that I consider non-spam, I don't want to be 'kept up

someone sent to my desktop to sell me something. Maybe that is part
of the reason?

And you could download collections of spam mails from the internet,

I agree, this is probably a bad idea.

With different mail aliases (7) and accounts (2), I get the very same spam

I don't have this issue for a spam filter to deal with. I'm sure
that helps.

If I start having problems, I'll download K9 as you suggested, it
looks fine except that it's external which will be a bit more of a
pain.

Who's stealing from TB?

2004-12-16 Thread Watcher
Hello tbudl,

Been lurking a while but now I have a question, Every time I restart
windows I have to tell TB to go ahead and reassociate EML with TB, I
have tried doing it by hand but no matter what it get's switched back
somehow. Any suggestions as to who the very impolite app is that's
stealing the association without asking?

Personally, I think politeness at the expense of accuracy of
thought and communication is a detriment. It throws up illusions
that everything is hunky-dory when, in fact, it is not. When the

worse than just coming out, up front, and stating the case instead
 of pussy-footing around.

Society has gotten a little *too* polite and it is time for it

I'd like to agree... and disagree with you. I absolutely hate
"political correctness" which is just a fancy way of saying "lying to
make the other person feel good" and I don't do it despite the fact
that that decision has made my road rougher at times BUT that is
still
no excuse for me to NOT consider the feelings of the person I am
communicating with.
Considering your position and your apparent success in that

you have the ability to relate the facts to the other person without

that you use that talent with us as well as you do with your

I have a few questions, first here is my template for new messages
for the
"thebat" list:

___ Template begin _
%SIGNCOMPLETE
%TO="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

  %Cursor

- --
Watcher aka Bill DeVos |[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 http://www.aack.net/ | http://www.aack.net/watcher
- -
%COOKIE
- -
__ Template End ___

This template has 2 problems, one is that the cursor is in the to
field instead of at the %Cursor position, is there a way to resolve
this? Second is that the message starts out with a bunch of blank
lines at the top. How do I get rid of them?
My second item is that I would like to be able to hit a single
keystroke (preferably either down or right arrow or something else
without a modifier) that will always take me to the next message.
The
Ctrl-] keystroke comes close but when the folder is all read it
generates an error sound instead of jumping to the next folder (any
folder would be better than the error sound).
I also have one suggestion, I would like to be able to quickly and
easily add a cookie to my list of random quotes (cookie list). As it
is I have to select several menu items, then scroll down to the
bottom
of the list, then hit enter, then paste the cookie. Is there a
better
way?
Ok one more question, I have setup PGP to save my password for 2
hours yet TB continues to ask me for my password for each message.
Have I misconfigured or is this a limitation enforced by TheBat?
All suggestions welcome, all flames redirected to /dev/null.
Please
reply to me personally as well so that I don't miss the answer on the
list.
  Thank you all for listening.

I got a good compliment from a tech support person the other day,
after a short conversation he said, "Yes! You have a clue, what a
relief!". We then conversed on many subjects most not related to the
problem (which we did solve) and after 15 minutes of non-related

that you've missed something very educational.

Yes, this is the problem with people like Steve, they aren't
stupid,
just very irritating. You have to balance if the information

I'd also like to note that from my experience a "Steve" ages very
well and becomes a considerable asset. I can't wait! 8^)
Generally speaking if a "Steve" does make some good points someone
that is willing to deal with his behavior will comment on it and the
rest of us will get the good parts without the bad parts via quoted
replies.
Thank you for being willing to be that person.

SL A lot of people have argued that an editor and a spell

people argue that
SL separate tasks should be handled by separate programs. So how
do I reconcile
SL the need to combine some tasks (MUA/MTA/MDA) but not others
(editor/spell
SL checker) into an email client?

FYI rumours have it that the well-advertised Version 2 will have an
option "use external editor". I think you will agree with me that
 this would make everybody happy.

I agree, the more a program is based on hooks into the code and the
