Change of address

2003-09-23 Thread myob
Hello list,

The account I use for this list is also the one that is
currently being plagued most by virus spam. I'd use the
message dispatcher, but there are so many TBUDL messages
that I'm afraid I'd accidentally delete some of them too.

So: what's the easiest way to change the address to which
my copy of this list is sent, please?

The Bat! - should I update?

2003-08-02 Thread myob
Hello list,

As will be apparent from this message, I'm still using the
'Christmas edition', as that's the last one about which I
  received an individual notification.

Seeing the editions used by other people on this list, I'm
wondering whether or not it's time for me to do an update.

But: I'm a computer novice, so:

  1. I don't want to risk using a beta (let alone an alpha)
  version; and

  2. I would need step-by-step instructions about what to
  do.

On the whole, the version I've got works well, though it
does sometimes need to be closed down when it decides to
hog all my resources. I think other people have reported
that problem too. Is there a later build which cures it?

The other niggle is the way I sometimes suddenly get the
  Invalid HTML!
Please forward this message to developers.
  screen.
Moving around often cures that, but I sometimes need to
close The Bat! and reopen it to cure the apparent fault.
Again, is that cured in a later stable release?

Advice gratefully received - and perhaps even taken if
it's simple enough and I've got the courage :-)

  Many thanks in advance,

That sounds like the classic case of a rules based firewall getting in
your way. So, are you running a firewall and have you checked to be sure
that it's not the one blocking TB!. With the new executable hash checks
that seem pretty standard these days, upgrading TB! will make your
firewall block it. You have to create a new rule for the upgraded TB! executable.

I checked in Norton Internet Security, which showed The Bat! as having 'automatic'
internet access. I changed that to 'permit all' - but that made no difference. [Could
that be the 'old' Bat - if so, how do I change it to the new one?]

I tried closing TB to see if starting again would help, but I was unable to close in
the usual way and had to use Task Manager - I use W2000, SP4.

s Don't forget that it does have its disadvantages

Nothing has *no* disadvantages :-)

s A simple example of the pitfalls of this method of emphasis

Must admit I've never come across that problem.

s /Must/ /it/ /mark/ /each/ /word/ or /does it span words/ -
s moreover, what about trailing /punctuation?/ Perhaps like
s /this/? And what happens if, for some unfortunate reason, /the

All I can say is that in Ameol the emphasis works for a group of
words as long as they are in the same line - which is an annoying
limit, but not a fatal one. The are also specific punctuation marks
which are recognized. And it is an /optional/ feature, as all such
extensions should - IMHO - be. And there's no reason why The Bat!
should have to follow the Ameol system (except that doing so would
make life easier for those of us used to that program).

s What I'm trying to say is this - it's troublesome to code, it'll
s never be perfect, some (many?) users will always want to turn it
s off, and I'd rather have a Bat 2.0 with PGP sign and encrypt
s buttons on the toolbar (i.e., customisable toolbars) than one
s which could do this - I call structure before fluff. Save it for
s 2.1, maybe, though?

Not a high priority for me - but still something useful I miss.

TF You have to tell another application (Agent?) to make itself the
TF default.

The problem with that would, I guess, be that it would still not be
possible for a third application to send mail using its internal
