Yes, because the configuration is saved in the registry. You have to export all RIT
entries in the registry @home and to import them @work. Furthermore you have to
modify some entries due to the
fact that you have different folder names on the two systems.. I'm not sure what to
do if you already have a setup @work with mails stored on that system. I doubt that
you may import your
home-setup-registry without causing some trouble (Please correct me someone if I'm
wrong) !

Good point. I guess I need to clarify. When I said "configuration", I
was referring to account and folder configuration: such things as
folder names and organization, templates, and filters.

Yes, such things as directory paths, fonts, etc., are stored in the
registry, but I'm not too concerned about them matching up in the two
locations--especially since many of these settings are going to be
machine specific.

On the other hand, if I simply just copy over the three files I
mentioned, is there a chance that there might be a conflict between
their contents and the registry settings? I guess that might be a
concern.

Thanks for the reply, Gerd!

Re: Configuration Transfers - TB POOR

2000-08-28 Thread dsig

We have been 'evaluating' TB and purchased our first license.

Although I feel that it is superior to Eudora (which I have used since it came
out) I must say that this storage of information makes TB very weak at best.

I am a 'road warrior' developer/consultant. My machine (our machines) have a
tendency to get hosed during development phases or changing clients/projects
etc.

When I get to the office on the weekend I want to copy my messages from my
laptop to my desktop. When our systems get hosed we want to load up the OS and
the load the couple of programs we use all the time.

With Eudora, on the weekend I could simply drag/drop my 'email' folder onto my
desktop and POW .. it knew everything there was to know. Or if a machine got
hosed .. load the os, load eudora from disk and copy the 'email' directory from
server and POW .. once again eudora was up to date.

Here I find it 'virtually' impossible to use TB in any kind of dynamic
environment. If all things are stored in the repository (WHICH IS THE WEAKEST
LINK IN WINDOWS) then I can see no way to make this work.

I Really hope that I am wrong and the someone will pop up here and say .. man ..
it is really easy .. just press this button ...

PLEASE .. good information is needed.

Thanks

DSig

guest OS, from my W2K OS (on another HD), and then just copied all the
subdirectories with it. My entire TB! directory in other words was
copied to the new OS. I did nothing to the registry, nor did I
officially install TB! in the new OS.

Then to get the accounts to show up in TB!, press Shift+Ctrl+Alt+L to
recover lost folders and messages. I then set up TB! by each account
name that I had previously, and all the folders with email is
automatically there - just by putting the account names into the new
TB!. Works like a charm. Then just start TB!. All cookie files,
filters, and other attributes are intact into the new OS, as you had
them previously.

There shouldn't be a problem here because you'd be doing what a lot of
users do to move there installation to another machine, i.e., copy the
mail account folder over to the other machine. Install TB! on the other
machine, point the account configuration to the copied account folders
location and the do a SHIFTCTRLALTL to create the directory
structure.

If you restore TB! to a new location, ie, partition/directory then
you'll have to tailor the relevant registry entry paths to reflect this.
If you're comfortable with TB!'s registry entries then this is a lot
easier than re-configuring the new installation. If you're not up to
dealing with the registry then SHIFTCTRLALTL it is followed by
user interface reconfiguration.

But it is insanity to store this type of information in the registry. THE ONLY
THING that should be stored in the registry is TB and its associated files (if
any).

This weekend I paid for this evaluation copy of TB and then sunday night on the
way out I copied over the directories (as I would in any normal program) BUT the
licensing information must be stored in the registry as now I have a outdated
TB. If this is the type of poor design under the hood what else waits?

Although Eudora has a rash of problems .. hell rash .. outright leprosy .. at
least all changes are kept within its boundries.

Not sure that as a road warrior TB will work sigh.

Hi dsig,

of "Configuration Transfers - TB POOR":

dtc But it is insanity to store this type of information in the

Agreed and often stated on these lists.

dtc would in any normal program) BUT the licensing information must
dtc be stored in the registry as now I have a outdated TB. If this is

That position doesn't add up. Yes, it is not necessarily a good
implementation decision to use registry instead of CFG/INI files to
hold configuration data and that is an often stated criticism. It is
also a criticism I completely agree with. That doesn't mean that a
whole raft of problems awaits "under the hood".

It is a just few second's work to dump the TB registry key (there's
only one structure) with an "Export" command from within regedit or
even to set up a batch file to do it. It is even less work to execute
the .reg file to re-instate the settings on another system.

dtc Although Eudora has a rash of problems .. hell rash .. outright
dtc leprosy .. at least all changes are kept within its boundries.

dtc Not sure that as a road warrior TB will work sigh.

Sure it will:

Configuration Transfers
