Yes, it was TB! taking the cycles, but only when I tried to close it.

Let's say you have several messages with an attachment 01.jpg coming
in. The first one will be stored as 01.jpg, the second as 011.jpg, the
third one as 012.jpg, then 013.jpg and so on.

So it is an auto-increment feature, but it is not optional.

Was it TB! taking 97% or some other process?
In my case Zonelabs started acting up and taking all processor power.

I've just taken notice of this thread because of something that just
happened. I'd just opened TB! and hit Ctrl-F2 as I always do.
Between this and another mailing list, there were 130 messages to
collect on this account (others had only a few and completed quickly).

When the connection centre showed it was up to message #117, I clicked
into the inbox of this account and at *precisely* that moment the
whole download process slowed significantly. From 3-4 emails per
second (I have 128k ADSL), it slowed to about 3-4 seconds per email!
I clicked into a different account but it stayed slow on the download.
After it finally finished, I clicked back to this account and all I
got was a blank pane for the inbox.

I decided to close TB! and it wouldn't. Checking the Task Manager it
was taking 97% of CPU cycles. After killing it and restarting in the
normal manner, everything appears fine. (Certainly the two emails
that had remained in the inbox, that I was going to look at, were
still there, along with 10s of others in folders where they had been
filtered to.

Personally I think it was a timing thing - something it was doing at
the instant I clicked on the inbox. I do this all the time and
usually have no problems.

Just thought I'd add this in to see if it helps. I suspect a bug.

Regards,

Allister.

Over here it's the other way around. The default is not to compress on
exit, while I prefer it that way, so I have to enable it whenever I
create a new folder.
It seems that somewhere there is an option that the both of us have
set against our wishes. We should swap. ;-)

You have to adjust a new folder anyway, so it's just one more thing to
observe... ;-)

AFAIK, TB! is only limited by system resources. You can give her all your
disk space for mails, and it will only take so long to access them as your
processor and RAM will need. :-)

That depends entirely on the size of the messages including attachment

What is really happening is it is really deleting the mail, and
reindexing the files. When you tell TB to delete a file, it flags the
file as deleted in an index file (.tbi) and updates the display to
hide the 'deleted' mail. When you run the compress/purge (they do the
same thing), it takes the 'deleted' mails, and physically removes them
from the files, and reindexes what is there. I run it automatically on
close as well. I sometimes clean up my folders, and run it, and the
report often tells you how much space you saved, mine is often
anywhere from a few hundred KB, to a couple of hundred MB.

Select your Inbox for an account, and go to Folder - Browse Deleted
Messages. TB! has a copy of every mail you deleted/moved/copied since
your last purge/compress in there.

Unfortunately I tried the same thing last night, and it didn't remedy
the situation, so I manually moved emails about until I had just 3
emails left in that folder, it was only then that the refilter would
not crash TB!, so I'm guessing I probably had a messed up mail in
there somewhere too.

This was an error a friend had with TB, which didn't download any
mail, slowed down the system etc. All because he de-installed the
virus plugin (AV-something) but didn't disabled that option

The funny thing is... I have started getting similar symptoms during
the last couple of days. I had to kill TB completely because it just
'stopped' dead. The same seems to keep happening if I try to
