Before I do so would someone storing messages in a separate directory
please see if they see the same? I thought it may be keeping a copy of
the attachment because *I* sent it, which would make sense as it
should also show in the sent mail folder, but I have also tried
deleting some messages from other people just sent to myself, with
attachments. The attachments are not deleted. I see a security issue
here, what if my wife finds these photos of my mistress, for example,
that I thought I'd deleted et cetera, et cetera

The bind outgoing blah blah tick box makes no difference either, I am
not sure exactly what that's supposed to change.

Thanks.

It is possible to store attachments from all accounts in a single

Re[2]: Attachments Separately or in Message Base?

2003-03-02 Thread Doug Gannon
Hello Mark,

Thanks for the information about pointers to attachments. That makes
sense to me. I'm going to try one account with attachments stored in
the message base and another with the same attachments in a separate
directory to see if there's a noticeable difference.

> If you store your attachments in a separate folder, as I do, then what
> gets stored with the message is a pointer to the attachment in the

> the pointer doesn't change, so there's no problem there.

This did work for me. When I moved a message with an attachment to
another account, I could open the attachment even though the
file was still located in the original account's directory. However,
when I then deleted the message that I had moved, and emptied the
trash folder, the attachment did not get deleted from it's original
location. And yes, both accounts were set up to remove attachments
when the message was deleted.

This isn't a big problem or anything, but it looks like I'd probably
want to keep messages in their original accounts if I decide to store
attachments in a separate directory. I guess I'm just too lazy to
want to have to delete attachments manually.

You make an interesting point about corrupted message bases. I wonder
how often that happens and how often it can be repaired. I'll just
have to try it both ways and see which one feels more comfortable for
me.

Thanks again for the comments.

Hi Allie,

First off, thanks for replying to my message. I've been watching this
mailing list for a while, and it looks like one of the friendlier
lists out there.

> The only thing you need to be careful about is that if you receive
> very large attachments, then your message bases can become very
> large and TB! needs a lot of free space in which to manipulate these

Thanks for pointing out to me about the free space needed for
compressing, etc. I do receive some larger attachments (100-300k). I
have plenty of space on my hard drive so this shouldn't be a problem.

I guess my real concern was that The Bat might slow down when having
to access a large message base. I imagined clicking on a folder on
the left of the window only to have to wait for several seconds for
The Bat to read the contents in order to display the list of messages
on the right. But then, maybe I'm not understanding how things work
in The Bat.

Do you think that a message base that has gotten large from
attachments, etc. would slow down The Bat? I'd be interested in
anyone's thoughts on this.

Thanks again Allie for your response.

That is the case. I have "Delete attached files when msg is deleted

deleted. It might be an issue of also having all of the following
checked on the Trash folder properties:
Maximum number of stored messages is 50
Keep messages in the base for (days): 3
Remove old messages
Compress the folder

I seem to remember in this thread someone indicating that a purge may
not be what is meant in the "Delete attached files when msg is deleted
from trash folder" selection. You may meed to manually "Empty" the
folder, or possibly even select the message in the trash folder and
delete it. I have not spent much time with it, but will after I am
done moving into the new house...

Just tested this twice on my system and it seems to work exactly
as I'd expect (doesn't delete the attachment until the message is
deleted from the Trash folder).

I think Mike's point is that if you open an MS Office document that was an
attachment, the Office app is going to put a copy of that document in the temp
directory. TB! can't control what the Office app does with the file.

What do you mean by "automatically"?

Automatically? Or by tabs at bottom of the message window?

Erm... actually, I think the option he needs is "File attachments are
stored:"/"In message bodies" in the Files & Directories... But I could
be wrong, I'm fairly new to TB! myself, after all! ;]

Great, thanks!

Do you know if there's a way to apply the "keep attachments in message
body" setting to all old mail? I would like to empty my Attach
directory, but I want the files to stay with the message bodies and it
didn't seem to work for old mail.

Thanks again,
Travis

8 bit, BUT.
problems seems to be several characters having to be used above and
below normal characters and what we as non thais may not mind, thais
tend to have fairly sensitive toes when things donot look normal.
There are several workgroups and websites devoted to the subject and
by far the easier way is to either run it under a Thai fully enabled
windows (which I have really not used myself recently) OR to run it
with a small switcher.
Local foreigners, ie most of our customers will want an English/German
or whatever windows but NOT thai.
Unless there is a secretary/girlfriend on the system...
Example: this morning I got a French Swiss system, main problem I didnt
have a suitable keyboard but he also wanted Thai

99% of our users are non Thai anyway, and the only requirment
is really a decent non proportional font as they would have the
switcher on their system anyway, for Word or whatever.
And if they are Thai, windows should take care of it.

Other category customers we have are japanese/chinese email requirements under
English windows...
Without having to setup Japanese or chinese windows on a separate
drive...

Re[2]: %ATTACHMENTS: doesnt show files attached

It doesnt say that anywhere... I thought it was a nice way to get a
list of what files are attached but sofar nothing

Wouldnt it help if maybe the helpfiles / docs could be improved?

Anyway, I am fairly sure I can generate proper Thai with that DB font.
The switcher seems to produce different symbols etc so I think it means
that with that Thai mono font (ie one of the DB fonts I mislaid) it should
produce thai. One of my friends probably has it as he is in graphical
design but he just returned from Singapore with some new hardware and
his designing is better then his hardware knowledge (g)
he is good at it but misses the experience you only get from many
different messed up systems...

Its the famous problem of running out of interupts, usb modems STILL
wanting fake com ports (so what are you saving...), a promise raid
card wanting ONE specific slot on the machine etc etc.

He bought me a replacement modem as well, a proper 56k dual chips and
stuff like that, the wrong version of a set of Linux cd's (Mandrake v6
which I already have..) and a replacement hard disk which they swap in
Singapore but not in Thailand..)

Anyway, what software / products are you marketing?
And how do you think one can prevent thais not to rip them off as
soon as they see that stuff???
Or some of the foreigners who are also in the fake cd business since
their Thai partners wouldnt know the difference between a music cd and
a sound cd...

If you have a website with the products let me know where it is.
