Many thanks for your reply!
I'd be interested in the Pro version then. Will have a look and see how it is!
Finally, messages can be displaied as plain text? Dont want any javascript or

Thanks Robin and Chris re: the docking manuever suggestion. I'm a bit
tired right now, so I'll do that tomorrow ... earlier Marck had given
me a suggestion re: regedit and The Bat!'s Toolbar entries ... following his

What a great list!!! Proving once again, there's more than one way to
solve a problem (I created!).

Thank you, Sir!!! This did the trick. I've saved these steps away as a
TB Toolbar Note for future reference ... now if I can only learn not to
"drag the toolbar". I did take a look into the tbTools sub-key folder
before deleting it and most definitely was set up to "float".

C> the toolbar for you? Weird...

The first time I open a message, there is NO toolbar displayed within
the message or by itself separately. Not until I take the selection
steps of View, then Toolbar, does a toolbar show up, but it is
displayed as a completely SEPARATE toolbar window. Close the message
and the separate toolbar window goes away.

When the same message or another message is then reopened, again,
after taking the steps of View -> Toolbar, a completely SEPARATE
toolbar window is displayed along with and above the message itself;
however, what I had before was the "toolbar" actually displayed WITHIN
the individual messages thenselves ... much like (similar to) The Bat!
itself when it is open. Hopefully my description is clear, but, if
not, keep pinging me until I make myself clear.

I obviously stumbled/clicked something to cause this situation, but I
have no idea what!

Thanks.

I agree wholeheartedly. I find new things all the time and I know

It happens when I try to copy text from an incoming message, always.

Here is a scenario: Another list to which I subscribe uses the L-Soft
Listserv product. I send a search message. The listserv responds with
extracts of archived messages that qualify, and even sends me the
command to obtain all of the:

GETPOST listname 123456 234567 345678 456789

I'd like to copy that command and paste it into a new message back to
the listserv rather than going the F4 route. When I paste into a new
message, what is pasted is what was on my clipboard previously.

Meanwhile, Allie Martin's suggestion has helped.

Hi Kim,

The AV plugin for TB! is a COM-based one it says - and you actually
install it from within TB! not from within Kaspersky. To do this you
need to go to the Options menu » Virus Protection » Add Virus Checking
plugins section and click the Add button. You'll be given the option
to add an external plugin (.bav extension) or the Kaspersky one. Select
the Kaspersky one and it'll be automatically installed. Then you just
need to set the options you want in the rest of the tab... i.e. scan
incoming/outgoing, and how to deal with infected mails, attachments,
etc... Next time you launch TB! you'll see the mail plugin load as
well as TB! BTW don't forget to turn off the real time scaner from
checking mail databases/plain text mails if it's enabled already.

I still use Personal version at the moment but will be upgrading to
Pro on renewal - simply because we'll be changing our various
individual A/V licences for a multi-user KAV Per Pro one to cover the
network - will be a tad more than 99$ for us though!!! ;-) For an
individual user I very much doubt that the upgrade is worth doing to
be honest. It seems to be more aimed at networked PC's. I haven't
found anything else in Pro that won't work in Personal except the
network facilities. Others using the Pro may be able to add more info
though.

If I (as the spammer) send out a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I
find that someone followed through with a url click that verified the
existence an activity at that address, then anything else that I send
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] will also get to you. Doesn't matter how many
levels of indirection have taken place in between - it's the same path
both times.

The encoded url just serves to put a flag in the database that
validates the starting point for your email address.

Part of my professional field is testing software firewall protection in
workstation and desktop environments. I also test those within the
server realm but for the scope of this thread I will remain with the
workstation/desktop scenario. Under basic testing ALL personal/desktop
software firewall solutions have been observed casing issues related to
LAN/WAN connectivity and speed, problems with some other applications when
coding and memory allocation conflicts arise and a host of other technical
problems. The issue is what may work for you may not for another, based on
networking issues, software/application issues and believe it or not,
hardware/peripheral issues.

All freeware/shareware personal firewalls provide adequate protection and
stability based on performance. All do NOT run flawlessly on every system
based on installed hardware, software or operating system.

IMPO a home/SOHO user should test each for a determined length of time,
gauge performance and application conflict issues and settle on the
firewall solution that 1] offers the highest degree of stability and 2]
offers them confidence that the firewall solution is performing it's
mission.

Anyway...

Take a quick look at the headers... some (helpful) mail servers put in "may be
forged" headers along with the details. This is often a good sign that the
spammer attempted to claim the message was from a source it wasn't. For
example:

Received: from caramail.com (host-213-131-71-117.link.com.eg [213.131.71.117]
(may be forged))
by vampire.certiflexdimension.com (8.11.2/8.11.6) with SMTP id g5NDbnM09140
for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Sun, 23 Jun 2002 08:37:51 -0500

Notice the line says it's from caramail.com, then has the real host details of a
dial up connection in the brackets... clearly the spammer attempted to forge the
header, but the mail server pointed it out. But apart from actually sitting
there, and processing them, no real quick way. I guess you could submit it to
spamcop, and get spamcop to do all the header processing for you, and when you
have the details, cancel the report... just an idea ;)

Try looking at the Full headers for the email... The From: header is easily
forged, as you can tell, and can also be guessed from the recent Klez virus (or
99% of spam) ;) By tracing down the recieved headers, you can work out the path
it took, and ultimately the senders ISP, providing they didn't use some obscure
proxy server to send through.

As I said the From is easily forged, but often the path the email took cannot be
forged.

Actually, all email has an IP address assigned by the mail server, even if open
relays etc. You'd still be able to track down the sending server, and then the
originating IP address, otherwise a service such as spamcop would be completely
useless. Often spammers try to add fake received headers, claiming they're from
hotmail/yahoo, but the IP addresses are often not the same, which is why spamcop
does chain test, and does a DNS, then an rDNS on the IP address/host found in
the email. There are two situations where the IP address in the headers would
not be the real senders, and that'd be an exploited server mail script such as
formmail.pl (I've personally been a victim to this one, as one of our clients
was running it), or where somebody has used an open proxy port to 'bounce' mail
through it. In the former situation, with spamcop, the offending server is
notified of the bad script (it is often easy to spot bad formmail script useage
by the headers, when an email comes from root@localhost or nobody@localhost, or
in my case [EMAIL PROTECTED]). In the later, often the ISP
takes action against the open proxy provider, assuming they're the offenders.
I've seen a lot of the former, but never seen the later occuring, although it is
a possibility, I doubt most spammers would spend the several hours required to
track down an open proxy.

You mean how the system *should* work. It works like that for your
mail and mine, and for the legitimate commercial mail we receive. But
it doesn't work like that for most UBE that comes from fly-by-night
senders. Sometimes the originating IP addresses belong to responsible
ISP's like Yahoo!, which might act to restrict their being used in the
spam chain. But more often the originating addresses are offshore
relay points, i.e., not *really* the origination points.

Re[2]: Question re eTrust warning re TB Tmp file

2002-03-01 Thread ETM

I want to thank Lars and Arek for their help with the infected
email. I must say that TB did its absolute best to keep it out
of my hands .

I am not certain dispatching worked, but shift/control/F2
definitely got a workout. Since I download more than one pop
account from different servers, I had to guess which one held it,
or perhaps that two each held a problem email. I finally managed,
using MailStart, to get to the most likely server to delete
problem emails, and believe dispatching may have worked on the
other server. The tmp files have been deleted and the AV alerts
have stopped.

Nothing ever reached the computer that wasn't safely corralled. TB and the AV program
sure
did their stuff. Of course, I am somewhat grayer for their
efforts .

You better do so :-)

BTW, that was the reason for my initial question. A OS level
backup will always save deleted messages too unless you do a
compress before. Sorry for not beeing verbose enough.

When I think about it: did somebody check how TB backup handles
this? Are deleted messages still there after a restore?

I'm not sure about TB!, but when I worked with databases (~1990), you
did a purge (to remove all records that were marked "deleted"), then
in TB! case a compress to take all the "empty" space out of the db
that is left when removing a record. Also, I would guess a re-index
happens which would speed up access time.

Anyone more knowledgeable on TB! inner workings want to confirm/deny
that?

Re[2]: Question about connections queue (last one, with a brief philosophical epilogue)

2000-09-27 Thread JMReichow

Wednesday, September 27, 2000, 9:14:30 AM, scripsi:

>>> What seems to be lacking is the option to delete Actions (or Tasks, if
>>> you will) from the queue _before actually connecting_. You can do it
>>> once you've confirmed connecting, but if you've noticed by then that
>>> it's the wrong account, why would you have to ?

To which Paula Ford had kindly reponded:

>> On the Menu bar, Options|Show Dial-up Monitor|Automatically. Under the
>> Queue tab, click on the action, press Delete button.

Which I dismissed first (as a complete solution to my problem). But in
rethinking it, I have found the following - and I'm not too ashamed to
bother all of you a third time with this stuff, but this time I'm
really gonna keep it short -:

Paula was indeed right: editing the queue _before actually dialling
up_ is possible and can be reached through the very Menu item she
mentions above. The problem with the settings in this Options tab is,
however, that they are very unintuitive and seem to interact with what
you are doing within the " Dial-up " window. I'll not bother wou with
my descriptions of that, but what I find difficult in usage is that
the only option to edit the queue is going into Options|Show Dial-up
Monitor and setting it to " Show Always " (!). It will then show (and
show the actual queue waiting to be edited) - exactly what I was
looking for thus! - BUT O BAT, BUT, whatever I do subsequently to move
this window out of sight (e.g. after having edited the queue; either
by clicking " Hide " or x - closing the window), the setting " Show
Always " will _not_ be saved or remain. ( " Hide "-click in the
Dial-up window will thus be adopted within those settings, which is
what I mentioned and disliked as interaction before. )

What is then the meaning of " Always ", after all.

Sorry - in addition to my previous question:
do those of you who are using a Dial-up connection necessarily get the
same pop-ups while e.g. Getting Mail as I do: "Connect to" one first

No, that's the problem. When I change the address in the address book,

Actually, what I was missing was the down arrow--and I see now that

Are you ready for this? I checked everything and my fonts was set for
courier new size 12, as soon as I set it to size 10 everything is
fine, as soon as you change the font size the messages get truncated.

They are erratic even if I receive from other group members and do
nothing. I basically have everything checked under edit preferences. I
want to see everything left justify and looking proper no matter who's
letter I see.

check 'options - editor preferences'
'right margin' is exactly what you're talking about :)

That has been ticked since I first installed the bat, so that can't be
it, I made sure that I let the wrap take care of the above, but I
still received it truncated. I noticed justify on wrap wasn't checked
off so I'll try that.
