While not a direct answer to the original post, I tried to use
the PGP approach several months back and not a single client
could install it. It is a pain for most people and not worth the
trouble. Before I am flamed by the die hard element, I say for
MOST people.

So, I shifted over to EasyCrypto (free) which means I can write
up stuff in Word, or whatever, and then have it encrypted. I then
send it along as an attachment. At the other end, a client can
open up easily as we have agreed a password together from the
outset.

No one has complained since and people are enthusiastic about
using it. Easycrypto doesn't need a List to work out how to use
it either ;-)

With best wishes,

I put up a feature request that the .TBB (message base) files are, by
default, encrypted (using a simple algorithm; something powerful but
slow isn't what's needed); at the moment they are effectively in plain
text.

That, plus the existing startup password, would provide good enough
security for most people, I think, without the cast-iron SmartBat!

On encrypting chunks of the hard disk: there are two classic
applications. I used the first in an earlier incarnation, and it
worked brilliantly; it is also reasonably cheap.

Yes there are other ways to encrypt stuff. PGPdisk comes to mind (Which I do
use).

As for using XP no chance. I need the functionally of a server, XP does not
do that yet.

Have a read of http://www.ritlabs.com/securebat/features.html this will
explain it far better than I can.

What I do like is that I can remove the ikey and everything is shut down.

There are a number of ways to encrypt filesystems or parts thereof
that offer more general utility. I question why you would spend the
money on something that only protects your e-mail.

Windows XP even offers an encrypted filesystem. An upgrade to XP isn't
something I would whole-heartedly endorse, but it makes more sense to
me than Secure Bat.

Am I the only one that is puzzled here?

Depends wether you think that it is worth it?

My office is my lap top. I don't want any one to get access to my mail.

(1) Don't forget to take your iKey with you.

(2) I have found it slightly slower than The Bat! but then it does have to
decrypt the mail base .
