With a smaller keyboard, a numeric keypad should still be mapped
somewhere. The '*' is on the numeric keypad.

I can kind of confirm. I certainly notice occasionally I ^* to open
all threads, and TB fails to respond to that. And it stays that way
till I close a window, or close TB. After which the keystroke starts
working again. I am not sure if that is a general bug, or fixed in
recent TB releases. Haven't tried enough to find out.

Most of the time it works fine. It is fairly easy not to remember to
give the message list focus too. So it often seems like nothing is
happening anyway.

Oh, I could answer your first question another way.

> On my system, shortcut * no longer opens all msgs in

It won't open all messages, because it is supposed to close all
messages (threads). :-)

I just use * to open all threads (or metaphorically
speaking, all the messages). ^ is a common symbol to abbreviate
holding down a Control key while pressing another key. Although
sometimes too brief in normal paragraphs.

On my Toshiba, the three keys are in a row, making it simple to do.

Workaround:
Create two global view modes: one with threads all expanded, the other
not. With the shortcut keys for global view modes you can switch from
one to the other.

OK. I hadn't tried doing Ctrl+Shift+Fn+0 -

If I hold Ctrl+Shift+Fn then tap the 0, it rather seems to work like a
toggle here on the Toshiba. But trying to get all the fingers in
position to do this can be a literal pain.

Navigating away from the folder did not produce thread-closing
behavior here.

Surprise, surprise - I tried Fn+0 with Ctrl> and it did
indeed open all threads. I had to have the cursor somewhere in the
message list rather than the folder list. When I navigated away from
the folder, all threads closed. I don't know if that's how it's
supposed to work, but I do like it.

It's crtl-* (no shift) over here that works fine, as it always has.

That's a known issue, since you're supposed to use the * on the
numerical keypad and that's lacking on (most) laptops.

On my laptop, neither of the commands works. They do nothing it seems.
I am sorting by References.

Trying to get threads to open and close as above, I tried using the Fn
key and the * (8 actually) the cursor does jump up one line, no matter
where the focus is. Not helpful, I know, but just an observation.
