FR: always visible/opened mails in thread view

2005-02-17 Thread dAniel hAhler
Hello TBUDL,

message list displaying in thread view should have the feature to mark
messages as "always visible or if not explicitly closed since the list
got activated", just like it is with the selected message.

This could also mean to use the flag attribute or some colour group as
an indicator.

Interested?

Can't be done with TB. More people have asked for something like this,
so it's possible that it's on the wishlist, but I don't know for sure.

The workarounds are 'threading by subject', but that's a lousy way to
thread.
Or to set your purging such that you keep your messages so long that
current threads are never broken. Purging after a month won't cause
many current threads to be broken and branches of threads that split a
month ago generally develop into fully independent threads.

Last way is not to purge automatically, but after some time delete the
stuff manually when your folder is getting to stuffed. That way you
can delete complete threads.

No reason to be surprised... I do not intend to use it for spamming.
I do not use it at all. I do not send spam, period.
I was merely testing a feature of some software I use.

Furthermore, even though address harvesters may be professionals,
those who actually use these addresses are not being professional.

I do think advertising through E-mail is legitimate, but only if it is
being sent to people who have expressed an explicit whish to receive
such a message (no "partner" stuff etc.) f.i. people who subscribe to
a newsletter.

Sending advertisements to people who did not request it is simply
unprofessional.

No, we have a different view on what constitutes a professional
spammers address harvesting operation. I already *have* harvested
the addresses as they come in. *I'm* not about to use them for
spamming. If it is your intent to do so, I would be very surprised.

The labour intensive part is not reaping the addresses in stored
messages. It is applying for list membership, waiting for the
confirm message back from the server, confirming, waiting for a few
weeks while enough addresses come in worth having then reaping the
benefits of harvesting.

It isn't going to happen!

It is not very responsible of you to suggest it might.

Either you're being humorous or you're not understanding what you
are suggesting yourself. Either way, I am attempting to make it
clear to the membership that they are not in danger of having their
addresses harvested by any spammer by posting to the list - unless
they show their email address in the body of their posting.

Actually, I disagree - completely. It is only amateurs who do what
you suggest - it is too labour intensive for the professionals. The
only "no effort" method involves "bots" that trawl web pages and
links looking for email addresses. Subscribing to mailing lists just
to harvest is a non-starter for most serious address harvesters.

This will only keep amateurs from grabbing your E-mail addresses.
By simply subscribing to the list, archiving the mail and extracting

Okay - but you have a bullet to bite.

You do have to go through every folder, but only to set the "Use
account default column settings" switch for each.

Once this is set, any change you make to one folder with that option
set will apply to all the others too.

You need to go into each folder's properties and enable 'Use default

1. At last, we are back to a more fun tonality ... ;-)

2. why do you archive your messages within TB!? Apart from the fact
that I don't archive them - isn't there a good archive on line? - I
use other means. For newsletters (and they are all in all the only
thing I really archive), I just print them to a PDF file and done with
it.

Well, my TBUDL folder contains 16500 messages, and The Bat takes one
second to display it (except when it's clicked the first time - then
it takes about 5-8 seconds)

messages address to 'tbudl@...' because you clicked on 'To' column ...

This would open up a virtual folder here, containing round about 17000

I think that what they meant was that if you switch to another
folder, messages will be displayed using the same criterion--not all
  at once--maybe?

And if you change the folder you'll see in that new focused folder messages
fitting the criteria you selected too.

I can't imagine somebody wrote this way you'll be able to see all messages
from all folders fitting that criteria :-)
More correct is: it's a not folder based view-filter, once applied valid
for all folders you're about to browse to, until you release the filter

Hi Marcus,
 Also try:
click on the envelope and get only read / un-read msg's
click on the author/recipient and get all his msg's
click on the flag and get all flagged msg's
click on the "P" (parked) and get all parked msg

And not only in the current folder but in all!

Does anyone know of any more things to Alt-click?

Try holding down alt while clickin on the subject. That will turn on
advanced filtering and show only messages with the same subject. Not
quite the same as threads, but it might suite you?

Hitting ctrl-+ should wiew all messages again.

OK, I got it working last night. It is not as easy to use as it was in
Virtual Access (my previous e-mail client), in which I only had to
typing "I" while pointing to any message on the thread I wanted to
ignore, but it works.

I don't have time now, so I'll try to explain later tonight what I've
done. That way, maybe someone comes up with a better idea.

Yes, I see it now. Great.

Thanks Miguel - this is a good tip about working on thread base.

While on the thread pane, right click on any message of a thread and
on the context menu select "Thread/Park" (or Unpark, read, etc.)

No, there isn't. And you are not the only one wishing there was that
possibility.

I have in mind something to more or less simulate this function (kind
of an Ignore filter) but I haven't tested it yet. I will post it here
when I do and if it works.

Working with thread view

2002-05-03 Thread Mitja Perko

Hi,

I am just begining to use thread view and have one question. Is there
a way to park or delete the whole thread and not just the first
message. How exactly are you using The Bat to read this list?

I have set it to thread view and wanted to park the messages I want to
keep and delete the others. Or at least mark the messages read but I
also cannot do it without expanding all messages.

Also is there a way to mark a thread with a sort of an ignore mark
(like in the NewsAgent)? So you skip the new messages that belong to
threads that you are not interested in.

Thank you,
  Mitja Perko

Use right-click menu for the messages selected (and threads, too) -
there is a thread submenu there. Move to - this is the menu item you
need.

Moving Messages in Thread-View

1999-09-30 Thread Martin Posch

Hellihallo to all from Austria,

After a long Time of just reviving and not reading messages I started
 to clean up my Folders.
 For every Folder of a Mailing-List I made an Archive-Folder where I
collect interesting Message-Threads. But If I am in the Thread-view
of the bat an I want to move a complete thread, I have to expand it
completely, before I am able to move it. If I don't do this, only the
 Top-Level-Message is moved.

I made this accidently with the Bat-List (It had about 1200 Messages)
and wanted to copy all the Messages out of the thread-view. The Bat
moved only 250 (Top-Level) Messages and crashed. Seems not only to be
a wanted feature but also a bug.

 Grusserl,Greetings,

(Sorry for bad English, practise is missing)

 Martin
