your signed emails

2003-10-19 Thread Jurgen Haug
Hello Marck,

I try to follow the thread about PGP and all, and I understand that your message has a
tick because you sign it different from the others, right? Does that mean that one can
only verify your message in TB and the likes, and not in Outlook? Or it doesn't
matter?

Actually, the very fact that it is signed causes it to be ticked. People here
are using different versions of PGP and their messages all show up similarly.

You should be able to verify the message in any client, provided there are no
compatibility problems between it and your version of PGP. A digital signature
in general does not really have anything specific to a particular email client.

Cheers,

Outlook don't do it because it don't support PGP/MIME.
Only users of TB can encrypt/decrypt/sign in/from PGP/MIME format.

JH> Or it doesn't matter?

Until Outlook Express will not support PGP/MIME it will not to do it.

No it is free. I made the same mistake. When you install it you just
click on register later and that's it, free forever. Try it and, as
I've found out in the last couple of days, it really is very easy to
use.

You may set a more long period for caching of your pass-phrase. See
option dialog of PGP, where you may set "Cache passphrase while logged
on".

If there isn't a specific reason you are using GPGshell, perhaps you
will consider switching to PGP 8.0.2 freeware. It works like a charm
in TB! and has a very friendly interface. I am especially impressed
with the automated interface to the public key servers so it can
look up keys automagically if I don't have them in my keyring.
  That's just SLICK!

I haven't used PGP since v4, and this is very similar and very easy
to use. I am impressed. I can also set the passphrase caching for
hours so I only have to enter my passphrase once per email session.

you mean this :

[+] GnuPG passphrase caching. The user now can select from various signing keys
available.

well, caching does not work and i can not select signing keys ; i get a
password prompt for the one that 'belongs' to the account ...

i still get a passphrase promp for every message i sign, despite the 30
min. caching i specified ... and only for the key with the same e-mail
address that belongs to the account i'm in, no choice.

when i'm in an account where there's no signing-key with the same e-mail
address, i even get prompted for a non-existing key ?!?!

Yes, I meant that, but since I don't use GnuPG, I couldn't tell what
that meant. It seemed to address your remarks.

I stopped using PGP a long time ago because it was such a hassle to
use. When I looked at it again about a year ago, I looked at GnuPG (I
think) and OpenPGP, etc. They seemed to be just as much of a hassle as
before. But the latest version of PGP from www.pgp.com seems to be
much less so.

I am a big proponent of "no hassle" since I look at so much email
every day. This seems to be pretty well done. It stays out of my way,
except for the first time I enter my password; I have it cached for
about hours, so I really only enter it once an email session. And when
I want to check a signature or whatever, it contacts the PGP Key
server for me and gets the public key. I like that. "Automated" is good
for me. I never liked having to manually distribute my key. I don't
like having to ask for one before using it. I know some people will
think that caching a password for 2 hours is unsecure, but I don't use
this at my office, so it works just fine for me. :)
