I was laid off a few years ago, and received 4 weeks severance pay. I
collected unemployment right away (well, after a waiting week). The
only way to know is to apply; depending on the state you are in, you can
probably apply online.

You will have to check with your local unemployment agency about
collecting. I can't remember how it works off-hand, as I'd jumped to
independent consulting as quickly as possible (pays better than
unemployment, and less bullshoy to deal with).

I can't help with the business end of things, unfortunately. But I
certainly know the emotional (and financial) rollercoaster that a
layoff can create. I was laid off 3 times in 2 years' time. Yay
dot-bomb era and telecomm bubble burst. Not fun.

Good luck!

Re: [TCP] first time for everything

2007-05-01 Thread Jones, Donna
Hi Lisa,

Having been laid off myself in the past, I can try to help answer a
couple of your questions.

In most cases, you can file for unemployment right away if you're no
longer working. Your May 15 pay date may throw a monkey wrench into
that, but it can't hurt to go down to your unemployment office and try
to start the process right away. They should be able to tell you more.
The severance pay doesn't affect your ability to draw unemployment--or
at least it didn't for me in Illinois 6 years ago.

You can probably expect to go through the various stages of grieving for
the next few weeks/months, which is perfectly normal. Most people
experience it at least a little when they get laid off, even if they
think that the layoff is ultimately a good thing. If you want to cry, by
all means allow yourself to cry. If you want to get mad, go ahead and
get mad. If you want to scream, do it in your car when you're alone or
scream into a pillow. It's all part of the healing process.

And do yourself a favor by talking about the experience whenever you
feel the need (as you did by e-mailing us here). Bottling it up inside
makes you get stuck in the grief process rather than helping you move
through it. If you find yourself getting depressed or stuck in an angry
phase, find someone locally to talk to. I know a bit about chaplaincy
because I went through training last week, so I can tell you that an
IFOC chaplain is trained to help you talk your way through a situation
like this. There should also be counseling resources available either
through your community or possibly through your former company. Use
whatever is available to you, and don't feel bad about it. That's what
they're there for.

Re: [TCP] first time for everything

2007-05-01 Thread Patterson, Jan
Ouch, sorry to hear the news, Lisa. Been there and know how it feels. It
sounds like you're going to turn this into a great opportunity -- good
for you.

Your severance package sounds very good. When my position was eliminated
(in 2005), the severance package was 1-week for each year (same package
for all employees who were laid off), and we were offered the usual
COBRA, which was about $500 per month, if you had no dependents. I
worked there for 14 years and would have loved the 2-weeks per year! I'm
glad to hear other companies are using the old standard. (This was the
third time I've been laid off in 20 years, and the first time I received
just 1-week per year for severance.)

Each state handles unemployment insurance a bit differently. In Arizona,
our unemployment info and filing can all be done on the Web. If
severance is paid in a lump sum, you can start collecting unemployment
immediately. If severance is paid during the company's regular pay cycle
(e.g., every two weeks), then you can't collect unemployment until
you've received all severance.

You already know this, but having a Web presence that produces a lot of
search hits is great advertising for a consultant.

You might check with your local government agencies that assist those
who've been laid off . . . maybe there are some grant funds or other
assistance (training, services, etc.) to help you get your new business
started.

Good luck . . . and take a little time to enjoy yourself!

In my ten-year career as a technical writer, I've always been able to
say I was never laid off--that is, until last Friday. The company I have
been working at for nearly nine years eliminated all three of the
technical writers' positions, due to a company-wide reduction following
a change in ownership.

I've been wanting to start my own business doing interactive 3D
documentation (software reseller, training, tech support, and
consulting), so it's really quite perfect. Beginning next year, I will
be moving frequently as my husband finishes his bachelor's degree,
pursues an M.Divdegree, does an internship, works for a few years, and
then goes back for his doctorate, so having my own home-based business
will be better than getting a new job every 1-3 years.

With the elimination of my job, I will be paid through May 15th, and
then will receive a lump sum payment for 18 weeks of severence pay. They
will continue my health insurance coverage for six months at no cost.
Not a bad situation, all things considered.

I realize I will have to talk to officials and professionals in some
areas, but there are still things I'd like to hear about from people
who've been there (and of course, sympathy and encouragement are
always welcome, too...
even though this is a great opportunity, it's still an emotional
experience):

In California, if you receive lump sum severance it does not affect
your unemployment benefits schedule, but severance received as
a salary continuation does (you apply at the end of the continuation).
I think this is fairly universal across all states, but check yours.

Try the Small Business Administration (www.sba.gov).

My experience as a 1099 contractor/consultant was that incorporating
didn't offer sufficient advantages to justify it. If you plan on growing
your enterprise beyond one person, that might change things.

Re: [TCP] first time for everything

2007-05-01 Thread Thomas Johnson
Hi Lisa,

With 20 weeks of pay, you've got an excellent chance to get a business
going. That's far better than having to rely on unenjoyment benefits from
the get-go. Use the time wisely and be frugal with the lump sum payment.
Resist the urge to go out and buy something special. People have a tendency
to squander sudden wealth. You'll probably find yourself struggling
financially for a while--at least until you're able to build your reputation
as a contractor. I've heard it said that start-ups should have enough cash
to operate for a year to be successful and that two years' worth of
operating expenses is a better starting point. You'll have about 5 months to
get things rolling. So, stretch that money as far as you can make it go. If
you do it right, the disciplined approach will pay off big time in a year or
two. If I were to recommend one purchase, it would be to buy a decent
computer if you don't already own one. It doesn't have to be
top-of-the-line, but I'd go for the most bang-for-the-buck. If what you have
will work for you, then hold off until your income is more reliable.

Don't forget to make your services known to your former employer. More often
than not, from people I've talked to, former employers are eager to bring
laid-off employees in as contractors. They can't just let the work go
undone.

When I was laid off, a local quasi-governmental/business organization
offered classes for starting a business. They offered lower tuition (25% of
full price) for people who were eligible for unemployment benefits. Make
sure you check with your local unemployment office. Look for groups in your
community that promote small business training like the Chamber of Commerce,
S.C.O.R.E. (Service Corps of Retired Executives--I think), or similar
agencies.

On top of that, you've got some experience running lists like this. That
should provide some good background training for soliciting business. You
can do it and I suspect many of us might look at you in a couple of years
with a bit of envy in our eyes. We'll likely forget the struggles you're
likely to have faced along the way.

Best of success and keep us posted.

Tom Johnson

You're still gunna talk to us after you make it..aren't ya?

I agree with Thomas, you are in a great position to live out your dream.
However, I disagree on one point...I'd take the hubby out for a great dinner
(play, movie, etc.) as a celebration of your new opportunity. Then, I'd get
down to work making that dream a reality. You can do it. After all, you
created this list serv. If you can keep this motley crew in line, then
running a business should be a snap.

I got canned by the world's largest computer company in a RIF nearly a year
ago, with no severance and with only one days notice. Today, I am in the
midst of negotiating whether I should take a long-term renewable contract
for an improved position at a local company, or go for permanent employment
at a very reasonable wage. (I've been contracting with this company for over
six months and we're a good fit.) My wife and I are now looking to move from
renters to homeowners and use the additional space to expand our
photography/art print business. None of this would have happened if I wasn't
terminated, canned, let go, dropped of the roster

Thomas had another good point...keep in contact with your former
employer(s). I've kept in contact with virtually everyone I worked with
after the termination and those contacts resulted in a number of very
lucrative short-term contracts. I still help one of my former clients on the
side with documentation and Help creation. Ironically, the excessively large
computer company that showed me the door has also contacted me about my
availability for a few short-term projects.

So...pat yourself on the back, hold your head up high and open the door as
wide as you can. It's a wonderful world out there and it has been dropped on
your doorstep.

Good luck...

Hi Donna,

Grant writing is completely different than technical writing. The skills
you've gained in the past 20 years will definitely help and give you a leg
up. But I'd highly recommend taking a course or other training. There are
definite tricks you'd learn. Grant writing is more of a selling proposition,
rather than an educational proposition (you want to sell your organization
so that people will fund grants, yes?).

Offhand, I can't think of any classes online although I know they exist. You
could check your local community colleges. You may also want to talk to
others doing similar things (is there a group you know apply for grants?
talk to 'em to see what they recommend).

do this. It's either that or hire someone to do it for us, which just
doesn't sit well with me. I can do it!

Is grant writing something that I should consider taking a class for, or
can I learn to do it well enough by falling back on almost 20 years of
technical writing experience? Is there an online course that anyone
would recommend? I would be grateful for any pointers that someone with
 grant-writing experience could give me.

Grant writing online course brought back 3.8 million hits. I was

millions of hits on Google.
