I had an Iomega 128M stick fail.
No errors, it just stopped being usable. The USB port could still identify

unformatted - 0 bytes available, 0 bytes used. Unformatable, however.
Not really a whole lot of use before failure (approx. 1 yr)

Walmart has a new LED flashlight that is solar-powered and can also be
recharged in a regular electrical outlet. It is by Brinkman.

I couldn't find it on the web, and Walmart didn't have a price on it yet.

It looks like a good product for someone who goes camping in the summer
time in west Texas.

This is not a shake-light or a crank-light.It only has one 1 LED.

I think there have been 2 other solar powered LED flashlights
reported.This one
seems to be more rugged than the others.

It is a small flashlight about 6 inches long and the lens is a 1 1/4
in diameter.
The solar panel is about 4 inches long and 3/4 wide. Comes with AC adapter
for recharging at home.

[Texascavers] unreadable CDs

2007-06-29 Thread Bill Mixon
I wonder whether some of the CD-Rs that prove unreadable elsewhere are using
a non-standard format. There are some software programs available that allow
you to use a CD-R as though it were a regular disk. You can actually save
from programs directly to it, delete files from it (without, however,
actually recovering the space they occupied), and so on. Clearly such
software does not use the standard data-CD directory format, whatever it is.
Presumably such disks cannot be read unless you have matching software on
the other computer. Maybe those are the disks that can be finalized, i.e.,
converted to one with its final directory info in standard format. The
standard desktop software in common modern operating systems (e.g., the
Finder on the Mac or Windows Explorer on a Windows machine) can write CD-Rs
(and, I assume DVD+/-R) perfectly well all by themselves. I've never seen
any advantage to programs like Nero. It might be the extra features in those
programs that cause the problems. -- Mixon

Could be. I don't know what format any CDs use, although the open ones I
was making were not of the interactive program type that Bill described. It
could be that the open CDs are not in a standard format though, and get
converted to one when finalized. Actually, what probably gets finalized is
their directory, since there would be no way to change the data format after
files were already recorded.

I've never seen any advantage to programs like Nero.

Nero gives options for different types of CD, like audio, video, data,
backup, etc., although I don't know if there is any real difference in those.
I like the way Nero allows me to organize the files before I burn the CD. I
can add, remove, and shuffle the order at will. It also shows a bar graph of
CD capacity and how far along I am toward filling it up as I manipulate files.
One can also save the burn project for future use, although I have never done
that. It seems unlikely such features would affect the final format, however.

I havent experimented much with the options (leave open, multi-session,
write-once and or other permutations) but in my own experience I've had
less trouble with Write the whole disk at once and include label text and
found that to be the most successful and consistent wavy to go.
[All of the CDs I create are for audio or ISO image datasets for creating
O/S installation disks.]

Longhorn had flowing water running through it the last few days and

Re: [Texascavers] Another LED light

2007-06-29 Thread David Locklear

There was a post about 2 years ago on Cavetex about the Pak-lite,
but after reviewing the web-site, it looks like they have improved
the light.

http://i.b5z.net/i/u/1572720/i/3d/small/super_glow.jpg

According to their web-site, the light will run continuously in low mode for

1,200 hours

with a lithium 9 volt battery, and continue to produce light for
another 7,460 hours.

That may be a little exaggerated,

the best lithium 9 volt batteries only have a capacity of 1200 mAH. That is
worse than a single cheap NIMH AA battery.

[ Lithium 9 volt batteries can sometimes be found where they sell fire alarms. ]

And you need to find some sort of water-resistant container to protect
the light and the battery.

The light isn't water-proof during use. It could be duct-taped to your
helmet in an emergency.

You can buy a rechargeable lithium-ion battery for it:

http://www.onlybatteries.com/showitem.asp?ItemID=14679.11cat1=14uid=1970

but it's capacity is a very low 400 mah, and the battery and charger are
very expensive.

AA and AAA NiMH's have come along way and so have some of the tiny
new LED flash-lights.

This may be a good emergency light in certain situations. However, in my
opinion, the new Gerber LED light that uses a single AAA battery is one of
the best choices for an emergency light.

However, cavers are known to be creative with home-made lights, and a
Pak-lite could be rigged with a homemade battery bank using
high-capacity
rechargeable AA batteries.

see how to do this in the article below:

http://www.reuk.co.uk/High-Capacity-Alternative-to-9-Volt-Battery.htm

I would like to see someone build a small emergency LED light using a Lithium D
size battery.

http://www.all-battery.com/ProductImages/lithium/ER34615D-Tab-1.jpg

That is rated a 19000 mah. That should last a long time, however,
that particular
battery is non-rechargeable and very expensive.

I agree with Mark. Maybe it's changed in the last 2 years, but
before then you definitely wanted to finalized a CD if you
wanted to read it on any computer other than the one that
burned it.

Interesting, as my experience has been just the opposite. I couldn't
 even open a multi-session CD I
made on a different computer in my office, and a couple
I sent to people before I realized there was a problem turned out to be
useless to them. After finalizing
all of my CDs, I have not had a problem. I use Nero to
burn CDs. Maybe it's a Nero issue. In any event, I think it would be wise to
finalize any CD you plan to
archive or send to others. They're so cheap
that there's really no reason to add more to a CD later anyhow, unless you're
just using it as a scratch
disk.

[Texascavers] RE: Self-cleaning Outhouses

2007-06-29 Thread Fritz Holt
More on this and anxious chickens. I hope that you have had your
mid-morning snack. As a kid of about 10 (1945) my parents and I were
visiting Dad's parents who owned and lived on a farm four miles outside
of Kilgore. One evening when the cows came to the barnyard to be milked
with their calves close by, I observed something that was hard to
forget. One calf felt the need to relieve itself of the mother's milk
and grass that it had eaten. As the calf began, a hen that was behind
the calf cocked it's head to the side to get a better look up and then
jumped up to catch the morsel before it could fall free. It's disgusting
but it is what chickens (and pigs) do. We still frequent KFC without
giving any thought to what the FOWL consume. This concludes the outhouse
(henhouse) humor for the day (maybe).

In 1988, my wife Sue and I joined a group of cavers to explore some of
the caves in southeastern Belize. We flew into Belize City and arranged
for a ride in the back of a pickup truck down the Hummingbird Highway.
After riding in the back of the truck, going about 20 miles an hour for
5 or 6 hours, we came to a small bus stop along the road. I think this
was in the Stan Creek area. Now when I say bus stop, I really mean a
small thatched building with a picnic table and a poster of Elvis on the
wall. The bus had come and gone for the day and there wasn't a lot of
food left at the little kitchen that served the bus stop. They had
beans, rice, and some chicken. We were glad to get it as we really
hadn't eaten all day. The food was pretty good and the chicken was
obviously fresh as the chicken we were eating was probably roaming with
the other chickens in the yard that morning. The rest of the chickens
were running around the yard - real free range birds. Anyway, Sue had
to use the rest room (out house), so after finishing eating, she went
down along side of the building. Well, the chickens saw here get up and
walk toward the outhouse so they came running. We'll, we thought the
chickens thought we were going to feed them - and they were right. Sue
went into the outhouse and about 10 chickens went around the back and as
Sue went number 2, the chickens were picking up some extra protein from
under the outhouse. Guess they were excited about getting some exotic
new food.

Anyway, it made me think twice about the food cycle. Nothing like a
little Bellezian Chicken.

OKnow I am officially grossed out.
I thought the chicken in Belize had a great free range taste.maybe it had
nothing to do with the free range.

2007-06-29 Thread Butch Fralia
From age 4 to 10, I lived west of Fort Worth, near the town of Azle.
Everyone in the neighborhood had two rooms and a path. Some paths led to
the woods and some to our out house. We had the best one in the
neighborhood, it had a Sears N' Roebuck bottom (use to be able to get them
mail order).

One of our neighbors finally got creative and built a two holer. Like the
outhouse in your story, it was open in the back and the fence wire to the
chicken pen was fastened to the outhouse. The guy was pretty generous and
everyone else was pretty poor. On occasion he'd offer a chicken fry to the
neighbors but couldn't figure out why no one ever took him up on it.
