Most people have seen the Steve McQueen movie The Great Escape at least
once. This is about that tunnel. The story is amazing. This is a
fascinating look at a tunnel built in a German POW camp which allowed 76
Allied POWs to escape. Interactive map - click on numbers, and it will
tell you about it. Then click on the word next in the same site and the
story will unfold: http://www.kerman94.com/tunnelharry.html

A hell of a zip line. That would be a lot of fun, but one day for someone, it
won't be.

[Texascavers] the BBC movie on caves

2008-02-15 Thread David
Anybody remember the DVD by BBC titled "the Planet
Series" and having the fascinating chapter on caves?

It is rumored that Blu-Ray is about to lead the way
in the hi-def war, and some are already claiming they
are about to win.

So you might be able to get an inexpensive copy
of the BBC movie in the Toshiba format in the coming
weeks.

That is the only cave related part to this post -
the rest is just opinions on digital video.

Blu-ray is probably just a fad and won't
last but a few years - much like the LaserDisc.

I am pretty sure that downloading is going to be the
main way people get their movies for the rest of
our lifetime. Unless they can bundle a bunch of movies
together on one blu-ray DVD, or already on a hard-drive,
or other storage device.

In a few years there will be some simple gadget
similar to portable DVD player, but having enough solid state
memory to hold hundreds of movies.
You would download the movies with wi-fi.It
would come in several
screen sizes from nano for backpacking, to 12 inch
for taking on road-trips. It isn't far fetched at all.
I am tinkering with a pocket-sized internet tablet
by Nokia; and it already sort of has that capability.

Re: [Texascavers] A Cool Way to go to School

2008-02-15 Thread David
That is cave related because caver's can learn from watching it
about ways to rig a tyrolean or for setting one up at caving conventions.

For example, their braking bar was ingenious, but what if
they were to accidentally drop it?

Somebody needs to go over there and upgrade their rig a little.

If that potato sack were to rip, I doubt that girl could hang on to her
little brother.

Wouldn't a dual-pulley system would be better?

It certainly needs a bar across the gate-less hook.

Shouldn't their school district furnish them a helmet and some gloves?

[ot_caving] the satellite shooting story

2008-02-15 Thread David
The U.S. military plans to shoot down a satelite next week.

This could have far reaching consequences.

Our neighbors in the nearest solar system, could see this
as hostile action.

They could have their motherhships here in a matter of years, and
wipe us all out.

Even if that scenario is not the number one concern, there are
still others.

For example,

What if the missile misses and accidently hits Tehran?

Here is Cheney, "Ah, shucks, we didn't mean to do that."

Or what if the other countries say, "Ooh neato, I want one of those
anti-satellite missiles."

Or what if I gadget turns out not to be a missile, but the infamous
"Giant Death Ray Gun?"

   http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/imagenes_tesla/tesla_torre.gif

Or what if we accidently hit some other satellite or the ISS?

But more likely, we will spend a half- million dollars and the
missile will be a dud? Cheney will pocket the proceeds.

Based on the above optimism, I would be surprised if the U.S. Navy
could knock down the satellite without creating some controversy.
