Update: I quit the railroad in April and am now back in Texas. After a hiatus of several weeks my internet access and email are back on line and, hopefully, unchanged. I am back at Mockingburd 300; phone 410-303-1177. If some of you don't know me please disregard this message. I have pasted in some address lists from incoming emails with addresses I didn't recognize but who might be friends--or who might not. Some may get multiple copies of it. Am in the process of rebuilding my house. Took 2 weeks off to go to Mexico. Bev Shade and I did some stabilation work on the Conrado Castillo field house which was beginning to sink and lean--foundation troubles. Claudia from Monterey accompanied us. Some or all of us went caving in Brinco and Desmontes and Entrada Franceses. After finishing there Bev and I went to EspeleoCoahuila for 4 days--it rained for 3 of um. Went into several smallish but interesting caves. Rode back to Austin Sunday with David Ochel as Bev was hot to head back to South Padre and Wilson who had been missing in Argentina for several weeks. In June I drove out to Eastern Kentucky and bought 3000 feet of 30# used mine rail and had it shipped back to our railroad operation at Tick Acres in Hays County. Hopefully it'll be enough to complete the first loop. Railroad construction is on short rations for a time while Terry and I are each involved with separate house building projects. [Texascavers] Spunkalunking
Only once in my entire life have I ever answered a personal ad. About ten years ago I was drinking my coffee in a cafe when I idly picked up the student newspaper. No interest in sports so that left the classified. There was an ad that said, Cute guy I met at San Felasco, wanna get together sometime, do some spelunking? San Felasco is a local nature preserve with hiking and biking trails, so I envisioned a cute young woman who was interested in nature and trying to make new friends. I replied with my bio for a failed run for the NSS board which included the phrase, I celebrate the urge to penetrate the nethermost crack! About a week later I started to get calls with heavy breathing but nothing else. This went on for about two weeks and became weird and irritating. The day eventually came when a falsetto male voice said, Hi Big Brucie! That's when I learned that spelunking refers to going where the sun don't shine! So now I use the word spunkalunking instead! [Texascavers] Looking for Photo Info
A while back, I issued a plea for photos for possible use in The TEXAS CAVER. I had a fabulous response to my request and would like to include one of these in the next issue, but I'm lacking proper credit. The photo is shot from inside of a cave overlooking a river, I believe it's the Pecos, with a bridge in the background and a truck driving over it. It was shot with a FinePix A400 camera 11/15/07 at 4:16 PM. If you know anything about this photo, please contact me offline. I can email it to you, if it sounds familiar. Mucho gracias! Mark

He never had a chance. Not even enough time to try to sell me insurance. I was sprinting up the concrete stairs on my way to get in my car - I didnt even see him. Crushed by my Tevas This unfortunate tiny creature. Only 2 1/2 inches long - broken - some parts flattened - he didn't even know what hit him. Nearly unrecognizable and faultless. He never did anyone any sin. With some glee I'd kill a roach twice his size. But this is different. A tiny little critter with a skeleton, reptile eyes and a brain. No scurrying. No infant insect eating. No more. -WaV

Wavy, Most biologists would say You did not sin, my son, for you have slain an exotic. The promised land (Texas) should not welcome the beasts of the field, nor the fish of the sea, nor even the birds of the air if they are not native Texans, yea, though they may be cute and appealing. Personally, I draw the line at nutria rats and Chinese tallow trees. Roger In a message dated 07/09/08 21:59:18 Central Daylight Time, wavyca...@gmail.com writes: He never had a chance. Re: [Texascavers] Cave Ceremony - Jodi Roberts
Cave Without a Name has concerts pretty regularly. They should be listed on our website. This is the first time one has ended up as a topic of conversation on Texascavers. This is also the first time we have had a women only event. I think it's funny how people (myself included) react to such events. As far as religion and the new age thing goes all I will say is what I say to my boss all the time. CWAN is an unusual place so it attracts unusual people and events. CWAN has great acoustics and so weird spacey music sounds really good down there. So does Christmas music. So does jazz. I'm not so sure how rational cavers are but we have also had lectures on hydrology and restoration workshops at CWAN. Is that exploitation? Or is it only exploitation when spirituality gets involved? I remember the late Jim Zintgraff, former presedent of the rock art foundation doing a slide show on the walls of the cave and discussing the shamanic art from the lower Pecos caves. He discussed science, art, drugs and spirituality. We all project our inner landscape on the natural landscapes we explore. Some people see only chemicals reacting, some see only the physical challange of climbing or crawling, some see a sacred space where they can find spirit. Some see the potential for exploiting these spaces for money. I think most of us are open minded enough to bounce back and forth between all these perspectives. Hey, how about that cool post about the neolithic cave art being related to acoustics. I wonder what those guys were experiencing. Nobody complained about bringing that crap to otherwise rational cavers. Any cavers who want to have an event that is more to there liking call me. Mike Burrell Caretaker Cave Without a Name 830-537-4212 www.cavewithoutaname.com I've nothing against religion, but I like your quote, new age crystal-fondling old has-been hippie caver chicks. Can I use that? It's good enough to require permission to use. As far as the music, see my second email on the subject. Corky Don Cooper wrote: Religion is bad, m'kay? Even if it's from a bunch of new age crystal-fondling old has-been hippie caver chicks, m'kay? I find it extremely irritating to try to bring on this crap to otherwise rational cavers. Let them have their little cave concert. They set themselves apart from the scientific explorative part of what caving is really about. To hell with those that would try to EXPLOIT it. -Sheez! [Texascavers] Explore a cave?
Is this your definition of explore a cave? http://www.bestsyndication.com/?q=20080611_mammoth_cave_exploration.htm The article briefly describes 7 commercial caves - 2 of which have expensive off-trail tours led by guides. You have to give the author credit though. How often do you read the phrase: advanced spelunking in the public media. or the phrase: utter darkness? How many of you have been in a cave that is: located under a river? Do crystals in caves really take a millions years to shape and develop?( dogtooth spar - for example ) I guess she just means the whole conglomerate of crystals and not an individual crystal by itself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spar_(mineralogy) The article was written for its intended audience - non-cavers who are looking for something new to do if planning a vacation. So I will give some kudos to the author, Shari Hearn for her effort to get a little deeper into the topic than most travel writers do. I just wonder how many caves she actually went in to write the article. It sounded like she went in 2 or 3 and really liked it. David Locklear said: How many of you have been in a cave that is: located under a river? I haven't been in it, but there is such a cave right there in Texas. Tarbutton's Showerbath Cave in Hays County goes under the Blanco River, and it is not a dive trip. There are several sumped caves under rivers, and even some under seas, where they resurge. The deepest cave in the world, Krubera/Voronja, resurges below sea level in the Black Sea. Do crystals in caves really take a millions years to shape and develop? To be fair, she did say thousands, and even millions, and she included rock formations, which could include the cave itself. She says Jewel Cave is the world's third longest, but it is now listed as second in Bob Gulden's list http://www.caverbob.com/wlong.htm. In general I think the article was pretty well done. I always enjoy the quite when I visit caves. :-) Mark Minton

Mark Minton wrote: I haven't been in it, but there is such a cave right there in Texas. Tarbutton's Showerbath Cave in Hays County goes under the Blanco River, and it is not a dive trip. Yep, I've been there. The entrance is just above river level and right next to the river. You can come out of the cave walk a few feet and jump in the river. There is a room under the river with a small crack that water pours through (that is the shower bath). You can stick your hand up into the crack and actually stop the water flow. The limestone is not more than a couple of feet thick between you and the river. It makes caving there kind of creepy! Allan
