[Texascavers] Projects Galore This Weekend!

2011-03-02 Thread Mark . Alman

So get out there, y'all.

There's a lot going on and the weather looks perfect!

Thanks,

Mark

To summarize:

100th project weekend for the GCSNA

The 100th trip of the Government Canyon Karst Project will take place on
the 5th and 6th of March. We will meet as usual at 9:00 on both days in
the parking area of the Volunteer/Research Station to organize teams and
objectives. On the evening of the 5th (Saturday) we will have a hog
roast, awards ceremony, and presentation in celebration of the 100th
project trip. The event will take place at the Volunteer/Research
Station. All are invited to come. The hog will be provided courtesy of
the Government Canyon Hog Hunters (feral hog eradication). A vegetarian
entre will also be provided. Please bring a side dish and your own
drinks. The meal will begin at 5:30. The TSA is a sponsor of this event.

Many participants will be camping at the volunteer campground nearby so
bring your tent and join in the fun. Then go caving, digging, or
ridgewalking on Sunday.

Directions to the Government Canyon Karst Project:

Find the intersection of U.S. 16 and Loop 1604 in northwest Bexar County
(clearly shown on any state highway map). Drive 2 miles north on U.S. 16
to the third traffic light and turn left onto FM 1560 (there is a Shell
station on the corner). Follow 1560 for 3 miles till you see the sign
for GCSNA. Follow the arrow to the right and drive 2 more miles to the
sharp left turn in the road. The gate to GCSNA is straight ahead. Enter
at the gate and then take the first right. There is an unlocked gate
that will need to be opened and then closed behind you. Continue to the
Volunteer/Research Station, where we will meet.

Cave Day event at the Village of Western Oaks karst preserve is
happening on Saturday 5 March.

We were hoping extra cavers would come help out at the Cave Festival in
South Austin that day. Cave Fest is from 9-3 so you can do both!

Folks, we're in desperate need of 12 cavers to help us w/this year's
cave fest. It's a one of a kind event, happens no where else or as well
attended. Please help us make this year another successful cave fest.

I'm so proud that cavers are so involved in this city wide event, oppps,
it's now multi county wide invitations. So, drop me an email or call me
and volunteer.

This year's info:

 Date: Saturday, March 5, 2011

 Time: 9:00am to 3:00pm

The Lost Oasis Cave Preserve workday is being rescheduled for SUNDAY 6
March

We encourage all cavers to support the VWO Cave Day and attend if you
can. The details for the Lost Oasis work day are repeated below so you
will have everything in one single email. Also note that the time is
moved up to 9 a.m, to give us an extra hour. Sorry for the confusion,
and we hope to see you there.

We plan to prune limbs, cut weeds, bag trash, and just generally make
the property more attractive. We need people, saws, loppers, weed
eaters, gloves, and maybe even a chain saw. Bring your own drinks and
snacks for the work, but TCMA provide bottled water. The date is
Saturday 6 March. The time, 9:00 am till noon. Meet across from Bailey
Middle School, 4020 Lost Oasis Hollow, in West Shady Hollow subdivision,
Austin, Texas. All visitors to the Preserve will be asked to sign a
liability waiver.

If anyone wishes to enter the cave, Preserve Manager Ron Ralph has
agreed to that, assuming he can track a key to the lock on the cave
gate. Ron can be reached at 512-797-3817 (cell) in case any one gets
lost, or if you would like to coordinate more details with him.

Interesting OT topic.

February 21, Associated Press – (Maryland; Vermont; Alaska) Footwear blamed
for
‘rock snot’ invasion of Md. streams. Felt-soled fishing boots, of all things,
are apparently the latest threat to local fish populations, prompting Maryland
to ban the shoes in hopes of stopping an invasive form of algae —
appropriately
dubbed “rock snot” for its resemblance to yellow-brown mucous — from hurting
pristine trout streams, the Associated Press reports. Maryland’s Department of
Natural Resources plans to prohibit wading with felt soles starting March 21
after discovering that “rock snot,” or didymo — a type of algae that coats
riverbeds in thick mats — thrives in the shoes’ damp fibers and hitches a ride
from one body of water to another. Rock snot has found its way across the
United States, and as of March 21, Maryland will become the
- 12 -
first state to enforce a felt boot ban. It was found in 2008 in Gunpowder
Falls
north of Baltimore. A western Maryland stream, the Savage River, also has
tested positive for the organism, but has not had a rock snot bloom. Similar
bans will take effect in Vermont April 1, and in Alaska in 2012. Source:

Dear Friends of Holey Rocks,

I want to personally invite you to join us in Fayetteville and the southern
Ozarks for 4 days of technical papers, field trips, a float trip, and field
demonstrations in late April. The webpage describes much of the planned
activity, but we expect a diverse group that should lead to education,
enjoyment, and expansion of our karst awareness. Call me if you have any
questions. Costs have been kept to a minimum, you can camp if you want, no
registration fee, and a banquet that will serve you up roast razorback, roast
goat, and if we can get our hands on one, roast python. Check out the webpage,
and register if you can make it. We'd love to have you join us.

[SWR] Fw: More on Larry

2011-03-02 Thread LEE STEVENS
Another good friend gone too soon.

Lee Stevens
- Original Message -
From: Cheryl Jones
To: Lee Stevens
Sent: Wednesday, March 02, 2011 9:34 PM
Subject: More on Larry

Larry Flemming, NSS # 17092, suffered a heart attack and passed away on
February 23, 2011. Larry lived in Anchorage, Alaska and was a member of the
Gypsy Underground Grotto. Details of services are unknown to me at the moment.
I received the following tribute from Emily Davis:

"I first met Larry Flemming in the mid 1970s. We got along well immediately.
He had a quirky sense of humor and teased me the way my older brother and
father did. Our political views were very different but this only was the
subject of interesting discussions and exploration of common ground from
differing perspectives and never caused friction in our friendship. We saw each
other fairly often and caved in NY and WV. He helped with the 1979 NSS
Pittsfield
  Mass. convention.

I lost track of him for a few years while he stepped back from caving but he
surfaced again in the mid 80s. We hit it off as though he had never taken a
hiatus from caving.

In 1994 Larry joined Carl Snyder and me on a trip to Australia. We visited a
bat research and rescue center in Queensland, went caving in Chillagoe and
rented a "bareboat" charter. This would become very important later. Larry
really knew very little about sailing but took a lesson and was Carl's second
on the three days of sailing a 24' boat.

Over the next 16 years I spent time with Larry including a trip to Costa Rica
where we mapped the deepest cave in the country with Ed and Eddy Keyes. He
managed to get away to Switzerland for the International Congress in 1997.
Larry worked with us in Hawaii mapping caves and as a field assistant for Diana
Northup in both 2008 and 2010. He donated generously in both time and money to
the Cave Conservancy of Hawai'i.

Larry was an accomplished diver with instructor certification. He dived in
Australia and on many other diving trips with his only major problem being a
broken foot when he had a misstep getting off of a boat. (He spent the rest of
the trip in a hammock being waited on by local women, so I was told.)

He traveled with Dwight and Mary Deal on a karst tour in China. He spent 2
years in Gabon building schools with the Peace Core and traveled around Africa
after his time was over with the Core. Larry was a project coordinator at
McMurdo Station in Antarctica and later
  on projects in Alaska.

Larry was not shy of adventure and travel but he wanted more. A few years ago
when Mike Warner and I went to Alaska to hike and tour with him he told us he
was going to sell everything and buy a sail boat so he could sail around the
world. Last year he traveled to Camden
Maine and found his 52' boat. He purchased the boat and started the process.

Larry planned to cave with us in Hawaii in mid February this year but called
and said he doubted he could come. We got an email only a few days before his
death that he just could not make it because he had far too much to get done in
the process of selling his home and
posessions so he could start his new life.

I will miss Larry for the rest of my life, and I am sure others will carry
his memory through theirs. He was a good friend to many; honest, true, giving
and opinionated."

I love our public library here in Mesquite, Bill.

They have a HUGE collection of all the books by Kinky Friedman and I've
read just about all of them.

Working on Clive Cussler now.

My daughter still goes quite often and my kids used to love getting
books there, when they were younger.

Now, if only their old man could have remembered to get the books

I could have saved a small fortune.

Not to mention all of the CD's and DVD's they have available for

For those with kids, or on a budget, or who loathe the idea of reading a

True, true But in these times wouldn't a digital library be the better
option, with the paper books kept in climate-controlled storage for when one
really needs to touch them?

I would suggest that if the digital library was searchable then it would
generate greater traffic...

I love our public library here in Mesquite, Bill.

They have a HUGE collection of all the books by Kinky Friedman and I've

read just about all of them.

Working on Clive Cussler now.

My daughter still goes quite often and my kids used to love getting

books there, when they were younger.

Now, if only their old man could have remembered to get the books

returned in time.

I could have saved a small fortune.

Not to mention all of the CD's and DVD's they have available for

checkout.

For those with kids, or on a budget, or who loathe the idea of reading a

book on a Kindle or somesuch, you can't beat your public library!

I hate digital books. If I am going to read a book, I want to hold it in my
hand in some type of paper generated form. So, I love libraries and Half
Price Books. As a matter of fact, that reminds me that I need to go get a
library card from the library in the area I now live in.

In that case you can drive to the storage place. However, the rest of us who
want to avoid the traffic and stupid drivers will stay at our computers ;-)

I love paper books, and have quite a collection, but I am having a hard time
deciding whether to get a digital book on my iPad as I think I prefer paper
too. However, I can't have every book out there and would like to reference
ones I don't have so if it's digital then I can.

Re: [Texascavers] OT - The Relevance of Public Libraries

2011-03-02 Thread caverarch
Stefan, I like electronic books a lot, mostly because out of print and obscure
titles are more and more becoming available for free through that source -and I
am freed from building or buying more bookshelf space. But I think a lot of
people will be able to use digital sources much more effectively with the
assistance of professional librarians working in public and academic libraries.
And the financial means to obtain the equipment for them will always be out of
reach of some.

There are currently ways to seach subjects of e-books, at least, if not to
perform internal searches.

RE: [Texascavers] OT - The Relevance of Public Libraries

2011-03-02 Thread James McLane

A year or so ago Science magazine ran an article by a couple of professors
arguing that in the near future there will be no need for human literacy.
Computers responding to the human voice will have the ability to file and
retrieve audio files as quickly, easily and efficiently as they handle text
files today. Information will be stored as audio and video, not text.

When this brave new world arrives, libraries will be obsolete since nobody will
bother to learn to read or write.

Until such time that the video/audio computerized service manual on how to make

I agree! Plus, I love the smell of books (and money for that matter), the
cover art, the info on the inside of the dust jacket.

Now I miss vinyl records, too: the cool album art and the big posters that used
to come folded inside with the record...

Just call me "Sheldon"...

Re: [Texascavers] OT - The Relevance of Public Libraries

2011-03-02 Thread Diana Tomchick
Ha! Then how do they explain the fact that teenagers prefer to use their cell
phones to text each other rather than talk to their friends?

There have been a number of studies done to show that there are significant
anatomical changes to the brains of humans that learn to read and write as
children, versus people who learn to read and write as adults, and people who
are illiterate (for example, see Nature vol. 461, 983-986 (15 October 2009) "An
anatomical signature for literacy," Manuel Carreiras, Mohamed L. Seghier,
Silvia Baquero, Adelina Estévez, Alfonso Lozano, Joseph T. Devlin & Cathy J.
Price). A recent study indicates that learning to read enhances the visual
cortex and speech processing in the brain, even for people who became literate
as adults (Science 3 December 2010: Vol. 330 no. 6009 pp. 1359-1364 "How
Learning to Read Changes the Cortical Networks for Vision andLanguage."
Stanislas Dehaene, Felipe Pegado, Lucia W. Braga, Paulo Ventura, Gilberto Nunes
Filho, Antoinette Jobert, Ghislaine Dehaene-Lambertz, Régine Kolinsky, José
Morais and Laurent Cohen).

I don't think that the written language and reading is going away anytime soon.

True, true But in these times wouldn't a digital library be the better
option, with the paper books kept in climate-controlled storage for when one
really needs to touch them?

I would suggest that if the digital library was searchable then it would
generate greater traffic...

Cheers,
Stefan

I hate digital books. If I am going to read a book, I want to hold it in my
hand in some type of paper generated form. So, I love libraries and Half
Price Books. As a matter of fact, that reminds me that I need to go get a
library card from the library in the area I now live in.
