This is to Austin cavers and Bexar Grotto members that attend the meetings at 
Chesters Hambergers in SA. Kerry was the waitress that was assigned to us for 
several years and was well liked by all. She was taken to the hospital 
yesterday after suffering  a CVA(stroke). Her thermal reg center was all messed 
up as well as severe intracranial pressure. She was taken off life support this 
morning and never regain consciousness.Present plans are for creamation. 
Funeral plans will follow.

[SWR] Last call for Bat Workshop

Hi all,
 
The USFS is sponsoring a bat workshop to be held in two parts.  The first 
session will be a comprehnsive session and held on Aug 10th thru the 12th (Wed, 
Thurs, Fri).  There will be day classes and evening field trips for hands on 
use of the bat detecting equipment.
 
On Saturday, Aug 13th there will be an abreviated session with class time 
during the day and a field trip in the evening.
 
The classes will be held in the NCKRI building in Carlsbad.
 
If you have not e-mailed me to sign up for either session and are interesting 
in attending please let me know ASAP.  It is first come first served.
 
The classes will be conducted by a BCI instructor.
 
If you have previously sent me your name, you do not have to respond again as I 
have you on the list for the session that you requested already.

The First International Planetary Cave Research Workshop is a follow-up to
the 2008 Lava Tube Workshop held in Grant, New Mexico, which brought
together researchers with interests in lava tubes from diverse backgrounds,
ranging from image analysis to modeling to robotics. 

This workshop is the first in a continuing series of meetings that are
intended to promote the exchange of knowledge and ideas between planetary
and terrestrial scientists interested in cave exploration and research
across the solar system. In recognition of the broad scope,
interdisciplinary nature, and strong international interest in this topic,
the participation of any interested scientist with relevant theoretical,
experimental, or field experience is strongly encouraged.

The workshop will incorporate oral and poster presentations as well as
extended discussion dispersed around a one-day field trip to local caves.
The workshop will bring together researchers with interests in planetary
caves from diverse backgrounds in image analysis, modeling, and terrestrial
analog studies. A small group setting will facilitate intensive discussion
of problems and issues in an attempt to identify the most promising
approaches to understanding these cave systems and to develop a
collaborative interdisciplinary research agenda. 

The First International Planetary Cave Research Workshop: Implications for
Astrobiology, Climate, Detection, and Exploration will be held October
25-28, 2011, at the National Cave and Karst Research Institute, 400-1
Cascades Avenue, Carlsbad, NM 88220 USA (phone: 575-887-5518). The workshop
will also include a one-day field trip.

Good Morning Friends of Caves & Karst!

 

Just wanted to remind everyone that early registration for the 2011 National
Cave & Karst Management Symposium ends this weekend!  Planning for the NCKMS
is really starting to come together.  It is going to be the perfect event to
learn and network from people invested in cave and karst management,
ecosystems, and research and there are some really great people already
registered.  Don't miss out on the registration discounts!

When you fill out your registration form- you will be required to select a
field trip.  The Logan Canyon field trip will show some really amazing
alpine karst and hydrological features but there are limited seating for
this trip.  The Timpanogos Cave field trip will get you out in the mountains
and get you hiking- this will not be your typical cave tour!  The field trip
will focus on management issues and challenges of a show cave in a
mountainous environment.

 

In addition to the sessions and the field trips, there are several valuable
workshops available.  Project Underground for outdoor(underground) education
is perfect for people involved in education and interpretation. And don't
miss Bat Conservation International's Bat Cave Assessment and Management.
These will be offered on Monday October 3.  While the workshops are going on
there will also be a vertical rope training for those who need to hone in on
rope skills.  All of these classes have limited seating and are starting to
fill up so don't miss out!

 

Finally, the event is being held at the beautiful Zermatt Resort in Midway.
This five star resort is giving us a KILLER deal on a block of rooms.  When
they are gone, they are gone, so make your reservations now before they

   To those of us who were wise enough to go to the NSS convention in
Colorado...

   I had an 18gal blue tote containing 12 tie-dye shirts and a set of
tie-dye sheets disappear from Groad Hollow on Saturday morning.

   Did this end up in your truck?

Bexar Grotto meeting on Monday, July 25th.  It should provide a nice change of 
scenery for those of us who have been stuck in Texas too long, and were not 
able to attend the convention in Colorado.  


The Bexar Grotto meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 
Chester's Hamburgers, on the NW corner of Highway 281 and Thousand Oaks Drive 
in San Antonio.  Hope to see you there!

Was there anyone in Austin interested in speaking about caving to this BSA
troop? These guys haven't heard from anyone and I thought I would give it
one last try to the list serve.

They are not asking for anyone to be tour guide, just for someone to talk to
the boys.

They are looking for someone who could speak about *"local caves and what
you need to know before you start caving -how you get started in the sport,
information resources, the fundamental safety rules, what you can expect, -
(eg dark muddy wet tight conditions),   the skills you need to master, the
gear you need, how expensive it is, and why caving is fun.  Pictures would
be great.  We have a computer it could be displayed on.  I was thinking of
30 to 40 minutes but we are flexible."*

Please let me know.

The First International Planetary Cave Research Workshop is a follow-up to
the 2008 Lava Tube Workshop held in Grant, New Mexico, which brought
together researchers with interests in lava tubes from diverse backgrounds,
ranging from image analysis to modeling to robotics. 

This workshop is the first in a continuing series of meetings that are
intended to promote the exchange of knowledge and ideas between planetary
and terrestrial scientists interested in cave exploration and research
across the solar system. In recognition of the broad scope,
interdisciplinary nature, and strong international interest in this topic,
the participation of any interested scientist with relevant theoretical,
experimental, or field experience is strongly encouraged.

The workshop will incorporate oral and poster presentations as well as
extended discussion dispersed around a one-day field trip to local caves.
The workshop will bring together researchers with interests in planetary
caves from diverse backgrounds in image analysis, modeling, and terrestrial
analog studies. A small group setting will facilitate intensive discussion
of problems and issues in an attempt to identify the most promising
approaches to understanding these cave systems and to develop a
collaborative interdisciplinary research agenda. 

The First International Planetary Cave Research Workshop: Implications for
Astrobiology, Climate, Detection, and Exploration will be held October
25-28, 2011, at the National Cave and Karst Research Institute, 400-1
Cascades Avenue, Carlsbad, NM 88220 USA (phone: 575-887-5518). The workshop
will also include a one-day field trip.

Good Morning Friends of Caves & Karst!

 

Just wanted to remind everyone that early registration for the 2011 National
Cave & Karst Management Symposium ends this weekend!  Planning for the NCKMS
is really starting to come together.  It is going to be the perfect event to
learn and network from people invested in cave and karst management,
ecosystems, and research and there are some really great people already
registered.  Don't miss out on the registration discounts!

When you fill out your registration form- you will be required to select a
field trip.  The Logan Canyon field trip will show some really amazing
alpine karst and hydrological features but there are limited seating for
this trip.  The Timpanogos Cave field trip will get you out in the mountains
and get you hiking- this will not be your typical cave tour!  The field trip
will focus on management issues and challenges of a show cave in a
mountainous environment.

 

In addition to the sessions and the field trips, there are several valuable
workshops available.  Project Underground for outdoor(underground) education
is perfect for people involved in education and interpretation. And don't
miss Bat Conservation International's Bat Cave Assessment and Management.
These will be offered on Monday October 3.  While the workshops are going on
there will also be a vertical rope training for those who need to hone in on
rope skills.  All of these classes have limited seating and are starting to
fill up so don't miss out!

 

Finally, the event is being held at the beautiful Zermatt Resort in Midway.
This five star resort is giving us a KILLER deal on a block of rooms.  When
they are gone, they are gone, so make your reservations now before they

   To those of us who were wise enough to go to the NSS convention in
Colorado...

   I had an 18gal blue tote containing 12 tie-dye shirts and a set of
tie-dye sheets disappear from Groad Hollow on Saturday morning.

   Did this end up in your truck?

Graham Schindel will be presenting a program on the caves of Montana at the 
Bexar Grotto meeting on Monday, July 25th.  It should provide a nice change of 
scenery for those of us who have been stuck in Texas too long, and were not 
able to attend the convention in Colorado.  


The Bexar Grotto meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 
Chester's Hamburgers, on the NW corner of Highway 281 and Thousand Oaks Drive 
in San Antonio.  Hope to see you there!

Was there anyone in Austin interested in speaking about caving to this BSA
troop? These guys haven't heard from anyone and I thought I would give it
one last try to the list serve.

They are not asking for anyone to be tour guide, just for someone to talk to
the boys.

They are looking for someone who could speak about *"local caves and what
you need to know before you start caving -how you get started in the sport,
information resources, the fundamental safety rules, what you can expect, -
(eg dark muddy wet tight conditions),   the skills you need to master, the
gear you need, how expensive it is, and why caving is fun.  Pictures would
be great.  We have a computer it could be displayed on.  I was thinking of
30 to 40 minutes but we are flexible."*
