Of those, I like the first one the best - the Icon Solo.

I saw other flashlights in the store on clearance that had some good prices.

[Texascavers] Speleo Technics company ?

2011-09-16 Thread David
I just found out a few minutes ago that this caving vendor went out of
business in November.

Is that right ?

I remember the first time I saw one of their headlamps at TCR.
Probably 1986 or so, for me.I
was immediately impressed by their battery packs, and had hopes of
getting one someday.

http://www.hitchnhike.co.uk/acatalog/speleo_technics_dx3_14led.jpg

It does not look like other vendors have any products in
stock leftover from Speleo Technics. Maybe in Europe ?

Or on e-Bay ?

I could presume their business failed for the obvious reasons, but anybody
know if there was something in particular that put the final nail in
the coffin ?

Is the closest thing to the DX3 a Raptor Pro ?

David, a quick visit to their own website http://www.speleo.co.uk/ and
you have the answer:

So old age seams to be the reason.

2011-09-16 Thread Mark . Alman

As a warm up act to the TCMA meeting at TCR, the TSA Business meeting will be
at an eye opening 8 AM!

Right after the TCMA Breakfast begins serving beans and coffee, grab a couple
of breakfast burritos and come on over for an always riveting TSA meeting.

What better way to start the day by attending a couple of meetings?!

Offer your input, insight, and thoughts to YOUR umbrella organization that
covers and supports all facets of caving in Texas.

Come see what the TSA does, has been doing, and what we have planned (you’ll be
pleasantly surprised!).

If you happen to doze off, due to the late night carousing Saturday night, our
resident bouncers, Ellie and Denise, will be sure to wake you up!

(May have to wake them up first).

Look for us in the vicinity of the serving area and please bring a lawn chair.

Hope to see you there!

Subject: [Texascavers] TCMA Members Meeting at TCR

Hi all,

The Texas Cave Management Association will be holding a Members Meeting at the
Texas Cavers Reunion at 9 AM on Sunday morning. All members and any other
interested people are welcome to attend. This is your opportunity to address
the board and find out first hand what is going on in TCMA. Our new bylaws
call for changes in our elections policies so we will no longer be holding
elections for Directors at this meeting. Our new election procedure includes
e-voting and written ballots (on request). We are encouraging all the
candidates to come to the meeting and make brief statements at the meeting.
Just prior to the meeting (and probably even during) the TCMA fundraising
breakfast will be taking place adjacent to the meeting. Come on out and I hope
to see y’all there.

In this issue, you'll find another great cover photo by Travis Scott and
superb photos from the NSS Convention in Glenwood Springs, CO in FULL
color by a host of Texas cavers decorate the inside cover.

There's an excellent article from Kurt Menking on the ongoing
exploration and mapping of Twinkies' Cave, owned by our very own, B.T.

The photos alone are worth the read and were submitted by a large cadre
of cavers.

A very unique trip report to Amazing Maze with running commentary from
the cast of dozens, including photos of, what appears to be, a very
memorable trip. This extraordinary submission from Ellie Thoene.

And, finally, we have a very enjoyable and informative trip report from
Bill Steele, on his experience at the NSS Convention in Colorado.

Herb and Jan Conn added to South Dakota Hall of Fame

Rapid City Journal, Sept 11, 2011

Fourteen South Dakotans added to state hall of fame
Herb and Jan Conn
Herb and Jan Conn transplanted to South Dakota in 1947 from the
East Coast, because in the Needles of Custer State Park they felt
they had found a climbing paradise. They lived simply and sustained
themselves with odd jobs so they could spend their summers on the
rocks. In 1959 Dwight Deal invited them to explore Jewel Cave. For
the next 22 years, they explored and mapped over 60 miles of
unexplored passages. Because of their discoveries, the National
Park Service has opened a new scenic tour of the cave. They have
mapped both the Needles and Jewel caves.
“The Conns have been legendary pioneers, working in partnership
in the worlds above and below ground. They are recognized worldwide
for their contributions to the sports of climbing and caving. Their
athletic accomplishments have paved the way for thousands of others
in the sports of climbing and caving and helped build significant
elements of the tourism industry in the Hills of South Dakota,”
said Sue Brown, a neighbor of the Conns in Custer.
“Herb and Jan Conn are the original Needles climbers. They first
visited The Needles while passing through on a road trip in 1947.
Jan had seen a picture of the Cathedral Spires in a schoolbook and
was curious. They climbed the Fan and the Exclamation Point that
day. The hook was set,” said Lindsay Stephens, author of “Adventure
Climbs.”

[Texascavers] cook needed

Cavers,

I am looking for a cook to buy groceries and prepare meals for the
upcoming Cave Gating Workshop at Colorado Bend State Park the week of
25-30 September. Menu is flexible. Whoever does this will also be able
to participate in some of the daily and evening activities (gate
building and evening lectures). We have use of the kitchen at the CBSP
Conference Center, where we will be staying. Gas range and grill and
oven. Additional pots, pans, serving bowls, and utensils may be
required, as the kitchen isn't all that well stocked. (We have those
things available, they just need to get out there.) Please contact me
off list if interested.

Also, as a reminder, I still have spaces available for the actual
workshop. Contact me for an application if interested. If you can't
make it for the entire week, we would still love to have your volunteer
help for whatever time you can spare. Let me know in advance, though,
so I can coordinate meals and bunk space.

[SWR] Looking for ideas to improve the value of NSS Membership

2011-09-16 Thread Dean Wiseman
Hi everyone,

On the NSS Planning Committee, we're trying to move forward on issues
central to the future of the NSS. One category we're working on is the idea
that we can do things to improve the value of an NSS Membership. To that
end, if you have ideas or thoughts on ways to improve value, I'd love to
hear them.

Fair warning, though: I've already sent messages out to CaveChat and other
listservs, and what typically happens is that I get a gripe list about
either what the NSS isn't doing, or should be doing, or specific beefs about
past policy decisions. That's all well and good, and I personally do my
best to take such responses into consideration. But with all due respect,
this request I'm putting out now is for ideas on how to move forward. In
other words, I'm looking for good-faith effort to bring ideas to the
table... No idea is a bad one, nor is it unwelcome. Our job on the
Committee is to take these ideas, sort them out, and present them in
coherent fashion to the Board so the Directors can decide the best way
forward.

Please email me off-list with your responses.

Thanks, in advance, for your help,

-Dean

Nobel Prize-Winning Physicist Resigns Over Global Warming

 Published September 14, 2011

 FoxNews.com

 NASA

 The global
 warminghttp://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/09/14/nobel-prize-winning-physicist-resigns-from-top-physics-group-over-global/theory
left him out in the cold.

Dr. Ivar Giaever, a former professor with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
and the 1973 winner of the Nobel Prize in physics, abruptly announced his
resignation Tuesday, Sept. 13, from the premier physics society in disgust
over its officially stated policy that global warming is occurring.

The official position of the American Physical
 Societyhttp://aps.org/policy/statements/07_1.cfm(APS) supports the theory
that man's actions have inexorably led to the
warming of the planet, through increased emissions of carbon dioxide.

Giaever does not agree -- and put it bluntly and succinctly in the subject
line of his email, reprinted at Climate
 Depothttp://www.climatedepot.com/a/12797/Exclusive-Nobel-PrizeWinning-Physicist-Who-Endorsed-Obama-Dissents-Resigns-from-American-Physical-Society-Over-Groups-Promotion-of-ManMade-Global-Warming,
a website devoted to debunking the theory of man-made climate
 changehttp://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/09/14/nobel-prize-winning-physicist-resigns-from-top-physics-group-over-global/
 .

I resign from APS, Giaever wrote.

Giaever was cooled to the statement on warming theory by a line claiming
 that the evidence is incontrovertible.

In the APS it is ok to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over
time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is
incontrovertible? he wrote in an email to Kate
 Kirbyhttp://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/09/14/nobel-prize-winning-physicist-resigns-from-top-physics-group-over-global/,
executive officer of the physics society.

The claim … is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8
degree Kelvin in about 150 years, which (if true) means to me is that the
temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness
have definitely improved in this 'warming' period, his email message said.

A spokesman for the APS confirmed to FoxNews.com that the Nobel Laureate
had declined to pay his annual dues in the society and had resigned. He also
noted that the society had no plans to revise its statement.

The use of the word incontrovertible had already caused debate within the
group, so much so that an addendum was added to the statement discussing its
 use in April, 2010.

The word 'incontrovertible' ... is rarely used in science because by its
very nature, science questions prevailing ideas. The observational data
 indicate a global surface warming of 0.74 °C (+/- 0.18 °C) since the late
 19th century.

Giaever earned his Nobel for his experimental discoveries regarding
 tunneling
 phenomenahttp://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/09/14/nobel-prize-winning-physicist-resigns-from-top-physics-group-over-global/in
superconductors. He has since become a vocal dissenter from the alleged
“consensus” regarding man-made climate fears, Climate Depot reported, noting
that he was one of more than 100 co-signers of a 2009 letter to President
 Obamahttp://www.foxnews.com/topics/politics/obama-administration/barack-obama.htm#r_src=rampcritical
of his position on climate change.

Public perception of climate change has steadily fallen since late 2009. A
 Rasmussen
 Reportshttp://www.foxnews.com/topics/politics/elections-2008/rasmussen-poll.htm#r_src=ramppublic
opinion poll from August noted that 57 percent of adults believe
there is significant disagreement within the scientific community on global
warming, up five points from late 2009.

The same study showed that 69 percent of those polled believe it’s at least
 somewhat likely that some
 scientistshttp://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/09/14/nobel-prize-winning-physicist-resigns-from-top-physics-group-over-global/have
falsified research data in order to support their own theories and
beliefs. Just 6 percent felt confident enough to report that such
falsification was not at all likely.

(We can't be doing that good of a job, can we? Or is the job perceived
as too tough or are cavers in Texas much too apathetic? I hope not.)

Anyway, continue nominating and, if you did refuse the nomination
initially, please reconsider.

Finally, I would like to re-run Ellie's excellent post from August as to
other positions in the TSA that we need YOU for!

Thanks,

Mark

I am happy to run again but sure would love to add some new faces to the
team. I encourage everyone to come out to the Texas Speleological
Association http://www.cavetexas.org/TSA/about.html (TSA) meeting on
Sunday, October 16th (at 8 AM!) and see what's going on with TSA and
share any good ideas you have. If you do not want to be an elected
officer, please consider serving on a volunteer committee by sharing
ideas and helping with responsibilities. It's so much easier when we all
work together.

Some volunteer committees already have excellent, active chairs
(Publications, Safety, Projects) but please give any and all volunteer
committee chair ideas to Mark Alman and he can approach them off list.

The following are non-elected committee chair:

*   Publication Committee Chair
* Safety and Techniques Committee Chair
*   Conservation Committee Chair
*   Membership Committee Chair
*   Projects Coordinator

The TSA can always use new members and welcomes back previous members
so please consider joining TSA
http://www.cavetexas.org/PAYPAL/index.php at this year's TCR at Flat
Creek Ranch in Johnson City, TX on October 14th-16th, 2011.

See you there!

Cavers,

There will be an election of officers at the Texas Speleological
Association meeting on Sunday morning, October 23rd around 8:00 am. To
have a successful election, the first thing needed is a slate of
candidates. Please nominate yourself, your best friend or your worst

RE: [Texascavers] TCMA Members Meeting at TCR - TSA Meeting!

This latest issue is a photographers delight, so be patient when
downloading it, as it is 70 MB (compressed) with a ton of photos in it!

(Yes, I did everything I could to make it download-friendly. If you
still have dial-up and it takes you a week to download this file, please

In this issue, you'll find another great cover photo by Travis Scott and
superb photos from the NSS Convention in Glenwood Springs, CO in FULL
color by a host of Texas cavers decorate the inside cover.

There's an excellent article from Kurt Menking on the ongoing
exploration and mapping of Twinkies' Cave, owned by our very own, B.T.
Price.

Copies of this newsletter will be at TCR and available to new members

Herb and Jan Conn added to South Dakota Hall of Fame

Rapid City Journal, Sept 11, 2011

http://southdakotanews.info/south-dakota-top-stories/fourteen-south-dakotans-added-to-state-hall-of-fame.html

2011-09-16 Thread Jim Kennedy

2011-09-16 Thread wcwalker
All,

We are still looking for ideas and artwork for the design for the t-shirts
depicting the 50th year of the SWR. I have several pieces of excellent
artwork from Andy but would like more for us to choose from. We will be
reviewing them at the Winter Tech here in Las Cruces and need to decide on
which one we go with. So, please get any ideas and/or artwork to me ASAP as
the deadline is drawing near.

The
http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/09/14/nobel-prize-winning-physicist-res

in the cold.

The http://aps.org/policy/statements/07_1.cfm official position of the
American Physical Society (APS) supports the theory that man's actions have
inexorably led to the warming of the planet, through increased emissions of
carbon dioxide.

Giaever does not agree -- and put it bluntly and succinctly in the subject
line of his email,

I resign from APS, Giaever wrote.

Giaever was cooled to the statement on warming theory by a line claiming
that the evidence is incontrovertible.

In the APS it is ok to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over
time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is
incontrovertible? he wrote in an email to Kate
http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/09/14/nobel-prize-winning-physicist-res
igns-from-top-physics-group-over-global/ Kirby, executive officer of the
physics society.

The claim … is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8
degree Kelvin in about 150 years, which (if true) means to me is that the
temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness
have definitely improved in this 'warming' period, his email message said.

A spokesman for the APS confirmed to FoxNews.com that the Nobel Laureate had
declined to pay his annual dues in the society and had resigned. He also
noted that the society had no plans to revise its statement.

It does not look like other vendors have any products in

Or on e-Bay ?

I could presume their business failed for the obvious reasons, but anybody
know if there was something in particular that put the final nail in
the coffin ?

Is the closest thing to the DX3 a Raptor Pro ?

Hi all,

The Texas Cave Management Association will be holding a Members Meeting at the
Texas Cavers Reunion at 9 AM on Sunday morning. All members and any other

the board and find out first hand what is going on in TCMA. Our new bylaws

elections for Directors at this meeting. Our new election procedure includes
e-voting and written ballots (on request). We are encouraging all the
candidates to come to the meeting and make brief statements at the meeting.

Howdy, y'all!

Our own Wizard of the Web, Butch Fralia, has posted the latest issue of
The TEXAS CAVER to the Members Area.

This latest issue is a photographers delight, so be patient when
downloading it, as it is 70 MB (compressed) with a ton of photos in it!

(Yes, I did everything I could to make it download-friendly. If you
still have dial-up and it takes you a week to download this file, please
consider upgrading to the 21st century!)

Price.

Copies of this newsletter will be at TCR and available to new members

The Conn’s are also famous for rock climbing all over the east coast. Conn’s

the Mule Ears in Big Bend and well as lots of other places.

Herb and Jan Conn added to South Dakota Hall of Fame

Rapid City Journal, Sept 11, 2011

http://southdakotanews.info/south-dakota-top-stories/fourteen-south-dakotans-added-to-state-hall-of-fame.html

-Dean

Thanks for the reminder, Ron!

I've already seen our entire slate of nomination for officer (thanks,
Don!) and we need more than one!

There have been a lot of nominations, but, also a lot of refusals.

The

igns-from-top-physics-group-over-global/ global warming theory left him out
in the cold.

Giaever earned his Nobel for his experimental discoveries regarding
tunneling

has since become a vocal dissenter from the alleged “consensus” regarding
man-made climate fears, Climate Depot reported, noting that he was one of
more than 100 co-signers of a 2009 letter to

[Texascavers] TSA elections

2011-09-16 Thread Ron Ralph
Cavers,

There will be an election of officers at the Texas Speleological Association
meeting on Sunday morning, October 23rd around 8:00 am. To have a successful
election, the first thing needed is a slate of candidates. Please nominate
yourself, your best friend or your worst enemy by sending a simple note to
the Nominations Committee (ronra...@austin.rr.com). Please do it soon to
avoid the rush.

Ron

RE: [Texascavers] TSA elections

2011-09-16 Thread Mark . Alman
Thanks for the reminder, Ron!

I've already seen our entire slate of nomination for officer (thanks,
Don!) and we need more than one!

There have been a lot of nominations, but, also a lot of refusals.

*   Publication Committee Chair
* Safety and Techniques Committee Chair
*   Conservation Committee Chair
*   Membership Committee Chair
*   Projects Coordinator

The TSA can always use new members and welcomes back previous members
so please consider joining TSA
http://www.cavetexas.org/PAYPAL/index.php at this year's TCR at Flat
Creek Ranch in Johnson City, TX on October 14th-16th, 2011.

See you there!
