[Texascavers] Update on Devetashka Cave

2011-11-15 Thread Lee H. Skinner
The Regional Environmental Inspectorate in the Northern Bulgarian town
of Pleven will fine Bulgarian-based NU Boyana Film Studios for cutting
down the vegetation surrounding the nearby Devetashka cave.

The Devetashka cave is to host parts of the shooting of The Expendables
2, an action movie which stars Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold
Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris among others

Under the Bulgarian environmental legislation, NU Boyana Film Studios
faces a fine ranging from the mere BGN 500 (approximately EUR 250) to
BGN 5 000. The region was inspected after a signal was filed by the
local Green Balkans NGO.

Besides the tiny fine, the producers of The Expendables 2 face the
rage of Bulgarian environmentalists who are concerned that the shooting
of the movie may have fatal consequences for the bats inhabiting the cave.

The cave is considered to be one of the most important natural habitats
of bats in Europe.

The bats are currently preparing for their winter sleep and any
disturbance may have fatal consequences, the environmentalists believe.
Some 13 endangered species of bat inhabit the cave.

*Bulgarian Environmentalists Rise against 'Expendables 2'*

Bulgarian environmentalists have officially voiced their protest against
the planned shooting of The Expendables 2 scenes in the country's
Devetashka cave.

The shooting of the action movie which stars Sylvester Stallone, Bruce
Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris among others may harm one
of the most important natural habitats of bats in Europe, the
environmentalists believe.

The bats are currently preparing for their winter sleep and any
disturbance may have fatal consequences, environmentalists have
explained, as cited by vesti.bg. Some 13 endangered species of bat
inhabit the cave.

The regional environmental inspectorate in the Northern Bulgarian town
of Pleven has approved of the building of sets and the subsequent
shooting in the cave.

However, the Bulgarian bTV private channel has claimed that parts of the
cave's terrain would be impossible to recover after the shooting and
that heavy machinery has been stationed near the cave's entrance.

Howdy Caver,

You are cordially invited to attend the Underground Texas Grotto meeting -
Wednesday November 16, 2011 from 7:45 PM-9:00PM

University of Texas Campus in 2.48 Painter Hall (156 West 24th Street,
Austin TX 78712) http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/pai.html

Aubri Jenson will be presenting - Hydrogeology of Fais Island in Micronesia

She was involved in a scientific trip by WERI (Water and Environmental
Research Institute of the Western Pacific) to Fais island in Micronesia in
2006. Fais is a small carbonate island with a thin, shallow aquifer and
supports a population of nearly 300 people. Minor fresh water springs and
cave development occur along the coast, but drinking water is primarily
obtained through rain catchment. Aubri was there to assess the need and
availability of groundwater resources on the island in the aftermath of a
typhoon. Come check out the great program and for the fun and fellowship
with Austin Texas Cavers.

For information on Underground Texas Grotto activities, please see
www.utgrotto.org

Officer contact, trip reports, event calendar, and new caver training links
to beginner trips or vertical rope training are available.

Before the meeting, take advantage of Sao Paulo www.saopaulos.net for
happy hour specials. This area is the best place to park and meet folks
walking over to the meeting. Then after the official meeting, we continue
with the decades long tradition to reconvene for burgers, beer, and tall
tales of caving at Posse East. www.posse-east.com

The UT Grotto Program needs you, the caver with photos and a story to share
about your adventures, scientific research, or something else really cool.

[SWR] Amazing Ice Caves of Austria

2011-11-15 Thread George Veni
Would you like to see some really cool caves?! I mean REALLY COOL! This
Thursday I'll be giving a presentation to the Pecos Valley Grotto on the
Amazing Ice Caves of Austria. Besides a bunch of beautiful photos, this
presentation will also give you a different perspective on the challenges in
operating caves for tourists, and how far tourists will go to in other
countries to see these caves. I'll wrap up with a preview of some of NCKRI's
upcoming efforts in ice cave research.

Anyone interested in caves or ice is welcome to attend! The presentation
will follow the business portion of the meeting, which starts at 7 p.m.,
November 17th. Where? The Headquarters of National Cave and Karst Research
Institute, 400-1 Cascades Avenue, Carlsbad. If you need directions or have
questions, just let me know, and feel free to share this message with anyone
you think may be interested.

Contact me.

Sincerely,

Gary Franklin

Speaking of programs Gary,

This video seems quite interesting, even to Cavers.

Should we show it at a meeting, Terry

We need 22,000 Signatures Before November 25!
Please Help!
We must convince President Obama to include funding for the fight against
White-nose Syndrome in his Fiscal Year 2013 budget. But with current economic
constraints, the President needs to hear from the public about the devastating
cost of WNS. We are using the White House’s new “We the People” petition tool
to make our request.
White House staff will review our request only if we obtain 25,000 signatures
by November 25!

George
