The reports continue for the simple reason that I am too sick to do anything
except sit at a very slow internet connection. It seems that dehydration just
set the stage for sickness. Shortly after penning the last missive it became
apparent that I was burning up with fever, so that, not geezerhood, is the
reason I crashed and burned on my way to the big cave. The fever broke early
this morning and I am feeling weak but better. This is a place where ducks,
pigs, bufffalo and chickens all have unnatural carnal relationships with
village children, so it is the perfect place from which to spawn a pandemic. It
will be my present to the world for christmas.

But back to the cave that I failed to enter. The Houay Gnom is a sizeble small
river even in the dry season and has a watershed that is somewhere between 150
and 200 square kilometers in size, not as big as the river that created Xe Bang
Fai but big enough to create an enormous cave that no one has ever explored.
The locals know nothing other than the upper fossil chamber that I failed to
reach and the lower entrance which is full of raging whitewwater even in the
dry season. They just laughed when I asked if they had ever been beyond the
mountain to my imagined pristine valley beyond. I might as well have asked them
if they had been to the moon.

It is hard to imagine that no caver has noticed this before, especially those
damned Frenchmen who apparently have nothing better to do than to take caving
seriously and think they still own the country. If you would like to see it
yourself it is easy enough to do. The University of Texas Castenada map library
has on line digital copies of 1965 vintage CIA maps that are fairly accurate
but badly out of date. For example Nong Khiaw didn't exist in 65 and there were
no roads anywhere. If you want to see where the big cave is just pull up the
maps for the Nam Ou which empties into the Mekong at Luang Prabang in central
Laos. Then use more modern maps to figure out where Nong Khiaw is. The giant
karst peaks are a dead givaway. From there backtrack downstream about 25
kilometers and look for Ban Then Ken. The Houay Gnom is the stream that enters
the Nam Ou about a kilometer downstream. It will be obvious where the cave is.

There is no way in hell I am going to be the one to explore the cave with one
light and a fever wracked almost 64 year old carcass, so who is gonna take the
bait? Can't let the Frenchies have all the fun!

Logan,

Never mind. I fugured out how to "back into" the file search from one of the
Longhorn plans. And there is only one SJ map, thought it is one that I
(personally) haven't seen before.

These architectural drawings are very detailed and artistic. Here is the link
to Longhorn Cavern SP:

https://www.tsl.state.tx.us/apps/arc/CCCDrawings/index.php?accNumber=&title=&year=&architect=&parkName=Longhorn+Cavern+State+Park&dosearch=Search

 From the website:

"In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to create the Civilian
Conservation Corps as part of his "New Deal." The program
provided jobs to young with families in need, while allowing Texas to preserve
land and establish its state parks system. Between 1933 and 1942,
the government invested more than 20 million into developing 41 Texas state
parks. Twenty-nine still exist.

Funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Texas
State Library and Archives Commission has digitized some 3,900
large-format drawings documenting Texas park development. The collection also
includes some later drawings that record revisions and additions."

Re: [Texascavers] Longhorn Cavern State Park- Civilian Conservation Corps drawings

2011-12-21 Thread caverarch
Logan,

That link is exceptionally cool, Logan, especially with the ongoing
Longhorn Caverns Project (next project weekend is February 4th!).

Very cool and informative and fascinating window to the past.

I think I know what I'll be doing this weekend!

A huge thanks for posting the link and have a good Christmas.

[Texascavers] Eco Activists Slam Bulgaria Govt for Covering Expendables from Bat Accusations

2011-12-21 Thread Lee H. Skinner
Bulgarian environmental organization Green Balkans has protested a
report by the Ministry of Environment, which found filming Hollwood
blockbuster "The Expendables 2" in a local cave did not harm bats living
there.

The probe, results from which were announced Tuesday, came on the heals
of alarms by eco activists who said that due to noise and light from the
shooting, bats in the Devetashka Cave were significantly disturbed
.

The Devetashka Cave, located in central northern Bulgaria, houses for
the winter a key European bat colony, with many endangered species
protected in the country and Europe.

An excessive number of dead bats were found after the shooting of "The
Expendables 2," claimed environmentalists.

It was reported a week ago that the European Commission has sent a
letter to the Bulgarian *Ministry of Environment and Waters*, inquiring
information on the case with the dead *bats* in the *Devetashka cave*.

Experts of the Ministry and now say that the majority of *bats* were
found to be in hibernation and the dead ones were within the norm of the
usual mortality rate.

Tuesday, Green Balkans recalled that a number of international wildlife
protection organizations, such as UNEP/ЕUROBATS, BatLife Europe, Bat
Conservation Trust, the European Speleological Federation, and CEEweb
for biodiversity, have also pressed the case at the Bulgarian Ministry
of Environment.

There must be a way to get Facebook to mail all group wall posts to
external e-mail addresses such as texascavers...if not I should write a
facebook app for it

RE: [Texascavers] UT Grotto meeting

2011-12-21 Thread Geary Schindel
I have to agree with Carl, I'm not part of the UT facebook group and I'm not
sure even how to join. However, I do enjoy the announcements of the UT Grotto
on Texas Cavers and occasionally drive to Austin for a meeting when it will fit
into my schedule.

Oh well, guess I'll have to get with the program.

I thought the idea of announcing meetings was to inform, in a timely manner,
any who might be interested in attending.
The logic of restricting such announcements from a widely monitored forum seems
grossly counterproductive and illogical.
Perhaps the second paragraph explains this apparent conundrum.

Attention all cavetex perusers please make the transition to more recent social
networking media if you wish to remain informed of the current social activites
of the UT grotto and its members. Chances are good that the current and all
subsequent officers of the organization will not exercise backward
compatability in information disemination. You have been warned.

Thank you.

This public service announcement was generated by a non sanctioned social group
member. It is unaffiliated with nor was it solicited by the actual UT Grotto.
If they had been on here they would have responded themselves.
