Re: [Texascavers] Chili Challange - OFF TOPIC

2015-04-26 Thread via Texascavers
Charlie:

It was between two newspaper columnists: Francis X. Talbert of Dallas and H.
Allen Smith of New York. Talbert got Wick Fowler to cook for him. David Witts
(Dallas attorney) and Carol Shelby (race car mogul) had just purchased a lot of
land (which was the seed for the Terlingua Ranch development) which also
included the Ghost Town. Shelby's son-in-law later started Chili's restaurant
chain. In the Albuquerque restaurant you can see a picture on the wall of Sandy
and two little blond kids - Craig and Tara Deal.

The first couple of years it was a big joke. In 1967 and 1968 it was a draw.
First year because the chili burned out the taste buds of the deciding judge
(Witts) and the second year masked riders with drawn six-guns rode in and stole
the ballot box before they could be counted.

Sandy and I played a significant behind-the-scenes role during the first dozen
years in the 70s and know what happened here in Terlingua. The bickering in
Dallas, Houston, and California resulted in THREE factions, in which people now
actually want to be judged the "best" chili cook. There is also now a LOT of
money involved, and the proceeds provide important support of the Terlingua
School and emergency services in the Big Bend.

Once upon a time there were two guys that decided to face off in a chili
challenge Wick Fowler was one (owned Two Aarm in Austin) and his friend whose
name escapes me. They were the only two there. I was there as were a lot of
others and it was fun. Now it has turned into some sort of bull shit with two
factions.

*I went to the first one with Wick's son Gordon and Shorty Fry. Francis X.
Tolbert was the inspiration for the laughing contest at Luckenbach. I
inherited all the garbage cans from the chili factory. *

*As years passed the factions got their drawers in a knot. I judged quite a
few events with Cactus and Walley Pryor. There was Chiiipiad in San Marcos
for years out at the aeropuerto. Those were fun indeed but I got syphoned
away to the BBQ cook off world which was better eating. The Taylor
International was really great. I was teamed with Ed Giunn, Wally Pryor,
then county judge John Carter now congressman, Guich Cook and the guy who
played the Virginian on the tele. *

Don Pedro was a great friend of Texas Caver while we explored the mines and
caves around Minas Viejos. I am saddened to hear he has passed, and send
condolences to his family.

The current issue of the TSA magazine is available online. Issues were
passed out at the TSA convention this past weekend and those not attending
will be mailed or passed out at your grotto meeting if you regularly attend.

[Texascavers] anonymous posts

2015-04-26 Thread Mixon Bill via Texascavers
I've just gotten 5 messages on the Texas Cavers list about the death of Pedro,
3 of which were anonymous. Also 6 messages about the chili cook-offs in
Terlingua, 3 of which were anonymous. Looks very much like people have
forgotten that Texas Cavers list-serve no longer identifies the senders
automatically. It would be nice if people appended a signature containing both
their names (and not just first names) and their e-mail addresses; your e-mail
program will be happy to do that for you automatically, if you are
memory-challenged. It might also cut down the number of personal responses that
get sent to the whole list. -- Mixon

The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it.

You may "reply" to the address this message
(unless it's a TexasCavers list post)
came from, but for long-term use, save:
Personal: bmi...@alumni.uchicago.edu
AMCS: a...@mexicancaves.org or sa...@mexicancaves.org

Interesting stuff even if it has nothing to do with caves. I like it.

[Texascavers] Government Canyon Karst Project

2015-04-26 Thread Marvin Miller via Texascavers
Cavers,

The final project date of the season for the Government Canyon Karst
Project will be on May 16 and 17. There are interesting digs to pursue and
caves to survey and many caves waiting to be found. We will meet at 9:00
both mornings in the parking lot of the Volunteer/Research Station. To get
there enter the park at the main gate. Take the first right and go through
the unlocked gate, closing it behind you. Continue for about 1 mile to the
VRS.

A note of caution: Galm Rd. to the park entrance is under construction and
the 30 mph speed limit is vigorously enforced.

Camping is available. Contact me for details.
