Re: [Texascavers] Snake Bite article and advice
I would prefer to elaborate on Selma itself. It is an unbelievable beautiful ghost town that is 80% black, the downtown part is 99% black. Gigantic ghost infested mansions with marble pillars can be purchased for $10K or less. It is rather like Garcia Marquez' magical village of Macondo where time is irrelevant and only memories are real. When cotton was king it must have been an unbelievably wealthy place but now it slumbers. In a message dated 5/1/2017 5:27:23 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, gschin...@edwardsaquifer.org writes: I believe the Selma Chalk is in that area. Some folks think that Chalk is impervious because they run tests on small plugs of material or maybe monitoring wells. However, some chalks are quite good karstic aquifers and produce a great deal of water. One of the major sources of water for London is the Great Chalk which I think also forms the great cliffs of Dover. I’ve thought there is potential for small caves in this unit for a number of years. I believe this unit also has a nationally known hazardous waste landfill that accepted waste from places throughout the southeast. Maybe Mr. Weazel can elaborate a little more on this subject. Re: [Texascavers] Snake Bite article and advice
Jacqui: I was just in the area north of Mobile, which is to say in the big triangle between the Tombigbee and Alabama rivers. I found a few leads but no caves. Much more needs to be explored there. The Shoals can be interesting. Be sure to go to the Sipsey wilderness. Sleazel In a message dated 5/1/2017 4:14:36 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, jlrtho...@verizon.net writes: Mr. Weazel, sir, How far north of Moblie and what kinds of caves? My Google Earth karst overlay shows some karst about 50 miles north of Mobile, the nearest to Mobile being soluble limestone under <300 feet of insoluble sediments made up of things like bentonite, so probably not terrific caving... Just north of that is a narrow band of Jackson group, carbonate rocks at or near the surface. I'm guessing you are talking about this part. Sand, clay and/or mud abound in both parts. I am not familiar with part of AL but will be moving to North Alabama north of the river in the Shoals area. Of course I would like to look for caves. Not a fan of snakes, though... [Texascavers] Who wants a DistoX2?
Hi! I got this from Alan Rice: "I'm thinking of building a batch of DistoX2s, so I'm looking to gauge interest. How many people would be interested if you could pick up one fully built for $500? This includes a clear 1015 Pelican box, tax & shipping inside the US. This is not yet a commitment on either one of us, just looking to see how many I should plan on building. Multiple orders are OK. Please forward this to others that may be interested. Email me with "DistoX2" somewhere in the header.
