[Texascavers] Caves in video games

2018-05-12 Thread David
Cave imagery is becoming popular in video games.

At the end of the cave passage, the character pulls out a pick-axe and digs
a narrow tunnel leading to a mysterious virgin room.

Unfortunately, the game developers have not yet put anything in that room.

Re: [Texascavers] 700 foot pit ?

2018-05-12 Thread Barb
Don says the depth of Na One was measured at 935' from the lip of the pit. The
difference is in the sag of the line in the center of the tyrolean. The pit is
owned by Bishop Estates and they gave permission specifically stating that
nothing be published. Halliday essentially ended access when he published.
Caving in Hawaii is trickier than many places due to landowner and native
hawaiian sensitivities. At the moment we have been sticking to mapping lava
tubes close to home - some quite small - and have the scars to prove it!

Re: [Texascavers] calderas

2018-05-12 Thread David
Bill,

That was fascinating. I met Dr. Halliday once.

However, I was proposing something sort of similar to the classic
deep-thought movies like Arnold Schwarzeneggar's, "Running Man," or "The
Hunger Games."

My idea is nowhere as crazy as Elon Musk's "Big Fricken Rocketship."Did
you all see the BFR presentation. He was having to fight his emotions to
keep a straight face.

If we do get to go caving on Mars, it will most like be on whatever
rocketship Mr. Musk and his SpaceX team end up launching.

In the meantime, I am extremely skeptical of the BFR proposal. However, he
has the "creds" now to make such outlandish presentations.

D.L.

P.S. I worked part-time this week at a desk job for the first time in a
decade. How do you all keep your sanity. I doubt I will make it another
day.

My guess is that David was conjecturing about a rappel down the wall of a
caldera.

There are actually two real pits in Hawaii that are the two deepest pits in the
US, per http://www.caverbob.com/pitdome.htm (If the NSS web site was working
right, you could get to caverbob's long and deep lists by way of the Geology
and Geography Section of the NSS.)

One water-filled pit has been plumbed to 865 feet. Not sure whether this was by
an ROV or simply a weighted line.

One shaft, Na One, of 862 feet was actually descended by Don Coons. There was
an article about it in the NSS News November 1995, pages 294-295 of a longer
article. The NSS News material is not accessible to Google, so almost might as
well not exist. A map of the pit appears in
