[Texascavers] Vampire Bat Immigration

2022-03-13 Thread Bob West
From Texas A&M AgriLife Extension through my County Agriculural Extension
Agent...

I'll never forget my first encounter with vampire bat shit (and looking up to
see the bats) while caving in the Xilitla area of Mexico many moons ago.

Vampire bats could move into Texas
Vampire bats are mainly found in Mexico and Central and South America, but
their habitat has been expanding north into the U.S. over the past few years.
In Mexico, vampire bats cause about $47 million a year in damages through
livestock predation and public health risk concerns. The warm-blooded flying
mammals are particularly attracted to cattle, according to Dr. Joanne Maki, a
rabies expert and Technical Director for the North American Veterinary Public
Health group at Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health.
It also feeds on other livestock, but primarily cattle, and those animals
suffer because of the blood meals being taken. Not only are those animals at
risk for potentially having rabies transmitted by the bite of a vampire bat,
but due to the blood meal the vampire bat consumes, it stresses the cattle or
stresses the horse, and you see a decrease in that animal’s production levels.

Since the vampire bat has been detected as close as 35-40 miles south of the
Texas-Mexico border, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other
governmental agencies have increased surveillance.
Feedlots, farms and wild animal habitats are being surveyed for signs of
vampire bat feeding.
If someone has an animal with an atypical bite wound, such as on the ears or
neck or withers, where vampire bats feed, [USDA’s] Wildlife Services wants to
know about it. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) should also
have more information about the surveillance program, awareness and resources
for people interested in learning more.
The rabies case-reporting system in Texas is linked with federal information,
which helps equip the Lone Star State to handle a potential vampire bat spread.
Signs and symptoms of rabies in animals
In animals, rabies manifests in one of two forms: furious and paralytic. Maki
noted the form is influenced by the animal species.
Dogs and cats quite often get the furious form of rabies, the typical thing we
think of when we think ‘rabid animal.’ Foxes can also become very aggressive,
lose their fear of humans and attack, and bite them. “But the other form,
paralytic or ‘dumb,’ is when the rabies virus basically causes paralysis in an
animal, and they’re showing neurological symptoms like staggering or weaving
around during the daytime when that wildlife species would normally be out only
at night.
Other animals with paralytic rabies may hide under vehicles or in sheds or
other places around homes and businesses because they’re sick and have lost
their innate sense of self-preservation. Maki said this form can be even more
dangerous to humans because people may think the animal needs help and approach
it.
Cattle often get the paralytic form. But since there are a lot of different
diseases that can cause neurological symptoms in livestock, we want to be sure
livestock owners are aware that rabies may be the issue. Recumbency, not being
able to rise, weakness in the hind legs, stumbling, hitting the head on a
fence—those are not normal behaviors for a cow. Livestock producers should
associate these signs with rabies, especially in unvaccinated animals or those
with lapsed vaccinations, so they do not end up exposing themselves while
handling that sick animal.
It is advised ranchers to contact a veterinarian immediately if they notice
livestock exhibiting these symptoms. Veterinarians are best qualified to make
preliminary differential diagnoses between rabies or other issues while
handling the animal safely.
If you’re bitten and the animal is rabid, the post-exposure prophylaxis is
expensive. The technology has changed and the number of doses of vaccine you
would receive are not as plentiful or as painful in the past, but it’s still
expensive.
Ecologists and other scientists are working on both sides of the border to
monitor vampire bats and provide timely information.

RE: [Texascavers] Poison-ivy and Karst

2013-10-23 Thread Bob West
I remember being very sensitive to poison ivy in my early teens growing up in
northern Brown county. All it had to be was springtime and I would get itchy
welts on my ankles and wrists. My parents found some poison ivy extract that
came in a dropper bottle.  I would take 1 drop a day for a week or 10 days;
then 2 drops a day for that long and do that all the way to 10 drops a day. I
would start the drop therapy in the winter so by springtime I was up the the 10
drop max and my sensitivity was then greatly diminished.

My mother would get poison ivy reaction regularly and not even be around it.
She stopped getting it when she stopped handling my fathers dirty jeans putting
them in the washing machine.

I forgot to mention an apocryphal story regarding my East Texas cousins who
were Piney Woods squirrel hunters in their youth and often came home with
poison ivy lesions. My aunt used an old procedure that involved my cousins
taking a certain number (which I don't remember) of ripe poison ivy seeds by
mouth for several (again, I don't remember how many) days. They were,
reportedly, cured of their sensitivity to poison ivy--or, at least, it was
greatly diminished.

Poison-ivy and Karst

How cave related can you get?? (I'll do everything I can to get this site back
on track)

I grew up in New York and was terribly allergic to poison ivy as a youngster.
Like, someone burned some brush with the vines in the pile, a half-mile away.
Good Lord, was I ever in an awful itchy situation after the smoke passed over
me --. Fortunately my lungs did not react.

When I started to do karst and geological things in upstate NY, I discovered
two things:

1. To see the bedrock I had to crawl on my belly like a snake up stream beds.

2. I could map the limestone without ever seeing it, just by mapping where the
lush poison ivy grew. (THAT is the Karst tie-in)

After I came West, I could more easily see Rocks and I gradually lost my
extreme reaction. But I learned what George cautioned: Immunity is lost by
repeated exposure.

Then I moved to Texas and discovered Poison Oak. It makes TREES going up the
cliffs with trunks as big around as Bob Oakley's thighs around springs in the
Big Bend. ESPECIALLY in what is now Big Bend Ranch State Park.

RE: [Texascavers] Fastball thrown at a wall of beeswax

2007-04-05 Thread Bob West
Bill, May is not that big of a metropolis and with the ag building out next
to the baseball diamond, one wall of the ag building was pulling double duty
as the backstop for pitching practice. One of the ag students had his
beehives stacked along that wall, along with a few bricks (sorry, I
exagerated about the wall part) of beeswax and... ; you'll just have to
visualize it, Bill, cause practice is closed, no outsiders allowed.

I did use that Lexan in one of my early attemps at making a waterproof
camera case for a Mexico caving expedition and being from May, I thought
double duty as a bullet proof camera case might come in handy also...

Brother Bob West,

I'm intrigued by the image of a fastball thrown into a wall of beeswax.
Have you seen this done? I drive through May, Texas once in a while. Is
that something they do there that I could watch sometime?

"Not as far as I know. Lexan is always hard and inflexible."

Lexan does have the ability to flex.

I bought some Lexan about 1/4 inch thick from a small company in a warehouse
district in Irving, TX that made bullet-proof display cases for museums and
jewelry stores. When a bullet hits it (when it is this thick) it flexes,
absorbs the energy and stops the bullet; like a wall of bees wax stopping a
fastball.

[Texascavers] Ridgeflying

2007-04-02 Thread Bob West

Looks like a new tool for ridgewalking:

Practicing on Earth

Called the Earth-Mars Cave Detection Program, the project is preparing to
enter phase 2, during which scientists will test their approach in "Mars
analogue" sites, terrestrial environments with similarities to Martian
landscapes. These sites will include dry, blistering deserts, such as the
Mojave in California and the Atacama in Chile, as well as frigid
environments like Iceland and Antarctica.

During the first phase of the project, the researchers acquired the thermal
signatures of a dozen caves in Arizona and New Mexico using an experimental
infrared detector, called the Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector (QWIP),
flown aboard an airplane.

Cave detection using QWIP works by spotting regions in the landscape where
temperatures are different from the surroundings. Inside a cave,
temperatures are nearly constant due to lack of sunlight. Outside,
temperatures fluctuate with the rising and setting of the Sun. At a cave
entrance, these two temperature regimes mix together to create a unique
thermal signature that, depending on the time of day, can be either warmer
or cooler than the surrounding environment.

"The caves show up as hotspots in a sea of cold, or as cold spots in a sea
of warmth," said study team member Murzy Jhabvala, chief engineer of NASA's
Instrument Systems and Technology Center.

The data, still being analyzed, look promising. In one series of images, the
researchers snapped thermal images of Xenolith Cave in New Mexico over a
24-hour period. The cave opening can be seen clearly in some of the images.

"It jumps out at you," said Jut Wynne, a biospeleologist (cave biologist)
with theU.S. Geological Survey and Northern Arizona University. "It
lights up like a Christmas tree in the predawn and in the late-night shots.
It's a bit more ephemeral during the day shots."
