Re: [Texascavers] Cascade Sink trip report

2022-07-27 Thread Charles Loving
Way back then. In the days of old when we were young and foolish we were
the cutting edge of cavers. The year was sixty something. Orion Knox was
our leader. We were exploring and discovering. Susie Holstrom was my
girlfriend and wife to be. We were mapping, traversing and pushing. I had
mapped Cobb Cavern near Georgetown. That cave was a show cave as Bill Eliot
calls them. Cobb is a subway tunnel like cave and was a tourist cave for a
short while. The owner was a friend and pyramid scheme salesman selling
soap (AMWAY). Anyway Susan and I along with Super Bounce and Faye and Bill
mapped Cobb.Wa thought it would link up with Laubach cave... Inner Space.
We then joined Orion and his team of mappers . .

Re: [Texascavers] Water Quality Lands help needed by TCMA

2022-05-07 Thread Charles Loving
I left Austin 25 years ago and that sort of ended my caving career. No, I
live on the Nueches . My place has a five acre lake. Gary Schindle has been
out here looking at our water situation and given us advice. The drought is
not abating and water will soon, if it isn't already a major concern. The
supply is finite and San Antonio guzzles millions of gallons. aagot to keep
the golf courses green.

Re: [Texascavers] Talked to Logan

2021-12-30 Thread Charles Loving
So far no one has called me on my smart phone or my dumb phone. My smart
phone company offered me a bonus and another phone. Not sure what to think
since I never call anyone and use it as an emergency tool if I have or see
a wreck. I have to use my dumb phone for that since I still can't figure
out the use of touch screens. I always get trapped in some circular phone
firing squad. But then we have never had service here in this canyon except
on telephone hill. I have Wifi which my neighbor says will make the phone
able to call out.

Re: [Texascavers] The Freak Brothers

2021-12-27 Thread Charles Loving
*Bill,*
*Gilbert and I are friends and we communicate. He moved to France decades
ago. Shelton is possibly the most famous underground comic artist on the
planet along with R. Crum, who also lives in France. Gilbert was a
Rangeroo, and the cavers were kin to the Ranger crowd. After every
publishing or the Ranger there was a huge drunken fiesta. I believe Shiva's
Head Band played for us along with the Conqueroo. I had an in with Jerry
Restlaff who was the Centex Lone Star Beer rep and he liked out parties and
donated kegs. We also depended on George Majweski who I witnessed at the
top of the last switch back to Bustamante. I guess that makes him a caver
too. I think he absconded with a few braless ladies. Part of the motivation
to donate. I was a caver, and a Rangeroo and a meteorologist at the time. I
drew many cartoons about caving and other topics for the Rag and LA Free
Press. I recall one night at 902 we had a great belly button painting
party. We entrapped a half dozen Tri Delts and painted their bellies. They
in turn went our a kidnapped more Tri Delts and any girl on the street.
Gilbert and I worked hard painting those buttons. *

*Didn't I get you to deliver Wonder Wart Hog shirts to him a decade ago/
The movie is pretty bad. Aficionados of the Freak Brothers will be happy
there is a movie but it doesn sing like I always thought it should. My
caver cartoon book seems to be well on its way. I may get it published
before I die. I was searching for My Mommie Was a Caver and can't find a
copy. I found my Daddy was a Caver. I also dredged up some Helmer cartoons.
There was also Caver Comics by Bill Elliot. Bill denighs his silliness. He
won the laughing contest at the Luckenbach World's Fair.*

*T for Texas Terry Raines printed My Daddy was a Caver in his printing bus.
He was 9 or 10 years old at the time. The youngest caver in the UT club and
one hell of a printer.*

He was a caver and went on many trips to the center of the earth. The
fondest trip was to Golondrinas where we explored a few other caves over
the hill and played basketball with local kids while their dogs ate our

Re: [Texascavers] High Adventure

2020-11-13 Thread Charles Loving
Once upon a time I joined Ron Bridgemon at Carlsbad. Bob Burney and I
participated in a Parks thing where we mapped off the trail. We were party
to that doings twice. I have no idea what was virgin or not. At one point
Burney and my team of mappers scampered, we could scamper then, up a
flowstone wall to a hole. We tied off to something, crawled through the
hole and were at the top of a cliff. We rappelled down to what is the lake
of the clouds. Can't say that we discovered it or not. Our Smokey had never
seen it. I have some ancient photos of me in a cave surrounded by these
huge balloon shaped formations the size of barrage balloons.

Next day we mapped Spider Cave.

Re: [Texascavers] Historical Question

2020-04-24 Thread Charles Loving
It was 1954/55 many of us were mere babies at the time. The Pogo strips
were daily and on Sunday. I searched through a few dozen of them. Knowing a
date would be helpful.

The current (May 2020) issue of *Texas Highways* contains a feature article
about Texas caves.

This has created considerable interest but most do not have the issue in
question.

I scanned it for you and have attached it to this mail.

As a matter of interest, 40 years ago I wrote a feature article about caves
for the July 1980 *Texas Highways*. It is attached to the next mail

Enjoy.

I almost never go East, ever. I haven't been in Austin in six months. San
Antonio once for an interview on BBC but other than that I stay out of
urban blighted areas. I like my lake and the whole concept of no people to
make noise or bother me.

You wouldn't begin to imagine the number of truck loads and the hours spent
on the project. We are lucky to have a mega rich rancher who has decided to
help us with his equipment. The guy modifies aircraft and has offices world
wide from Singapore to Miami but grew up in Bandera and is pretty
unassuming except for his wild ass ideas. Good guy and his foreman wants to
meet with you to talk about the 5,000 acre ranch he manages. He is a
retired large animal vet. A really sweet guy, a real gentleman which is
rare these days.

Menard is one of the great Metropolis areas. Lots of caves or sinks and the
Jim Bowie silver mine still needs to be found. Also there are as I recall
from past experience zillions of ticks. The reconstructed San Saba fort is
pretty nifty.

2019-11-05 Thread Charles Loving
*The lake is on highway 337 between Leakey and Camp Wood on Pine Mt Road in
front of my house. We have done all that. We have used dye and like I said
dumped hundreds of tons of rock, caliche and cement into the lake and are
still doing that today. Our newghbor is using his front end loaders and
three dump trucks, moving rocks and dirt. This is the headwater of the
Nueches River. The springs that feed the lake are still running but no
longer roaring like they did. There is water but it is no longer five to
six acres. My own little creek that is a dry weather creek runs during rain
events. The water comes off the hill and down the gully and pools before it
crosses the road about 200 yards from the lake and disappears underground.
There are a half dozen caves above my house in the cliff side. There has to
have been a shift below the lake due to drought perhaps or something we
weren't aware of. One of my neighbors built a beautiful cement dam across a
creek that trickled. It never filled and no amount of bentonite and such
helped. He now has a beautiful useless dam.*

An idea. I may just leave the stuff at Ediger's. Finding the camp site is
difficult and I can't drive at night. Have to go to Vancey for eye surgery
this week. Seeing a specialist. Been to a near ophthalmologist and they
want me to see this guy. Old eyes. Maybe they can fix them. Who knows. The
thing is supposed to take six hours or so.

Good work Bockbeer keep it up. Watch out for the quincerera monsters. And
the Martian sand worms. I have seen them on the tee vee, they live under
the dunes and eat people. There were two or three on earth out in Utah that
some folks killed with an elephant gun or some such. But they may still
live on Mars. I don't think there are any on Pluto but who knows. Prince
Bacaratti had a hidden base on Pluto. He was the evil guy that attacked
Earth with a tornado weapon. Buzz Cory and Cadet Happy took car of that at
some point.

The never ending cave in the sky sounds pretty cool. Is it a booming

Isn't Bockbeer too old and portly to travel like a vagabond? I quit hitch
hiking when I was mustered out of the AF. I had a motorcycle that I drove
it from SFO to DC via PHX and OKC. After that I had my own transportation
and never depended on anyone else. I did go to UT and OU and was a caver
too.

One has to remember he brought a 100 pound duffel full of stuff he didn't
need. My military duffel bag didn't weigh that much and it held all my

*100 pounds in a duffle is amazing. I didn't take a 100 pounds for three
weeks in Costa Rica. I travel with an ancient back pack. I take
extra shorts, a pair of pants, underwear, two or three t-shirts, a shirt, a
jacket, a flashlight (teeny) some socks, and toilet articles, a knife, all
which weighs maybe 25 pounds. I wear my all purpose shoes, pants, longsleve
shirt, Bil Bell belt, and a gimme hat. Travel light. Oh, and a book or two.
No cell phone or computer. I used to ride the bus at one time. **Going from
Austin to Matehuala was real easy on the Tornado Bus, about twenty bucks.
The five bucks to ride in the back of a pick up to Real de Catorce. I did
it that way cause it was fun.*

[Texascavers] Happy thoughts

2019-06-15 Thread Charles Loving
*IPCC and the Green idea plans are based on the assumption that greenhouse
gases can be removed from the atmosphere. That technology does not exist to
scale needed at this time for obvious reasons of energy and land
requirements. Paleoclimate records easily show us that you aren't going to
simply stop global warming at +1.5-2 C by ending emissions (the current
carbon dioxide equivalent concentration is 500 parts of million; 1700s
concentration was ~275-280 ppm, even with other greenhouse gases). The 1.5
C report last autumn suggested another 0.6 C of warming was locked in based
on recent emissions and we must be net zero carbon by 2050; but this is
based purely on emissions from *humans*, removal of carbon on scales of
hundreds of gigatons (basically removing what took plants tens of millions
of years to sequester...bind as solid matter via plant growth...in *tens of
years*...really? With what energy source...what land?) and fast feedback
sensitivity. Water vapor...loss of sea ice and albedo...some effects from
clouds...other feedbacks which are clearly showing an exponential behavior
are simply neglected in models. Even the feedbacks which are easily seen
and more quantifiable are accelerating much faster than expected. The
Permafrost is melting fast, methane is spewing, the oceans are getting
warmer, the circulation in the atmosphere has changed. Are we on the road
to extinction? Now that is a happy thought isn't it. Our grand babies might
be doomed.*

Have no idea what a Garmin is. In the Air Force we had a navigator on our
weather recon aircraft who had a little dome to shoot stars at night. We
also had TACAN and a few other devices. Never got lost. No GPS or Charmin
in those days.

Smart phones.
I had a nifty Samsung something that did all manner of things. The screen
was way too little for my ancient eyes. The teeny ap things were impossible
for my fumble fingers. I kept pushing the wrong buttons and calling
porn-hub or some such. I had two of them and tossed them in a drawer with
my four Kindle machines. I went back to a dumb phone that does one thing,
call people and get rob calls. It will text I think but I don't do that
because it is a pain in the culo,It does have tetris and a phone book. As
for GPS i dug up my road atlas of Texas and a state highway may with Dolph
Briscoe on the cover. It still works. No one calls out here in Deer Corn,
there is still no service. My land line still works quite well.

Re: [Texascavers] [SWR CAVERS] Your GPS Devices May Stop Working On April 6 If You Don't Or Can't Update Firmware

to pick out north. And I use paper maps. But then i haven't been lost or on
a mapping trip in 15 years and the Texas Highway Dept map works for me. I
usually know where I am going.
