Re: [Texascavers] Photoshop
I drew the Kiwi Sink map using Inkscape. I like the app a lot, and I like the fact that it's open source, but it did crash at least 50 times while working on the map. The saving grace is that it does a great job of creating a backup of your project when it detects that it has crashed. Crashing was inconvenient, but I never lost a bit of work. I just kept having to go delete the primary file and rename the backup to be the primary and then continue. I think that the main reason it crashes it that I had embedded a bunch of 300 dpi sketch notes in the document, making it rather large. Perhaps if you link to files rather than embedding them, it won't crash as much. I'll try that next time. [Texascavers] Can anyone give a talk in Austin to this group?
A friend of mine is looking for a caver who can do a brief talk to some kids. Thanks, Dale Hello! I am looking for someone who would volunteer to speak to a small group of 6th-grade boys about caving. They are students at Garcia Middle School who are part of an after school program with the Boy and Girls Club and Camp Fire USA, Balcones Council. They will be taking a field trip to Longhorn Caverns State Park, and I would love to have someone come speak about caving as a follow-up. It doesn't need to be anything formal, in fact informal is probably better. Maybe you could just tell a couple stories, show them some pictures or some gear, and let them ask a few questions. If you can mention anything about careers, that would be cool, but it's not required. We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30, but I can also keep them as late as 6pm if later would be better for you. You wouldn't need to be there for the entire class; I'm thinking something between 30 minutes and 1 hour would be ideal. Anytime between now and the end of the semester would be good. I second the suggestion to use Sanyo Eneloops. I haven't used them heavily, but my impression is that they sacrifice some capacity but reportedly have less loss when in storage and should last through more charge/discharge cycles. Re: [Texascavers] Headlamp question
I've used the Apex for a while. The first time I used it in Longhorn Caverns, the electronics went wacky, and drying it at home didn't help. Got a replacement, of course, but I shouldn't have had to. I'm tired of Princeton Tec. Probably sent 10 lights back to them over the years. A good warranty is nice, but reliability is nicer. Re: [Texascavers] Carbon Dioxide and Low Oxygen in Texas Caves.
I remember former Colorado Bend State Park ranger Ed Young once suggested that the air was best in the park caves in the coldest part of winter and the hottest part of summer. I don't think that the suggested that it was a definitive pattern, but he did lead the crawling tours our there all times a year, so his experience may count for something. Re: [Texascavers] Golondrinas update
I was down there last week. I ignored the kids who clearly wished to sell us on car watching or guiding or something. The upper entrance to the cave seemed pretty simple to me. No one mentioned charging for pictures, and everyone was friendly. It's a little awkward having to enter the cave from above, but I guess it makes some sense that the village that contains the cave also contains the entrance (not sure that's exactly what's going on). Having to be put on a leashed to peek over the edge seemed a bit strange, though some non-cavers in the group appreciated the security it provided. I found it to be inconvenient because only one or two people could peek down at a time. And the guy who held your leash said at the end that there is no charge for security steps, which is code for tips accepted. So we tipped him. The cave still very much pleases, and the platforms are well-away from the pit. We also visited Micos, Tamul, Tambaque, Cueva Linda, Las Pozas, Xilitla, Tamtoc (newly opened ruins--thanks for the idea, Walt), and La Pesca. While there was plenty of new development around most of these since the last time I was there, all seem to be intact and valued by the developers. Seeing change is hard, I know, but I felt pretty okay with the kinds of changes I saw at these tourist sites. Underneath the superficial developments, it's the same old Huasteca. Dale From: Greg Passmore gpassm...@mac.com Subject: [Texascavers] Golondrinas update To: texascavers@texascavers.com Date: Thursday, March 25, 2010, 9:40 PM Went to Golondrinas a couple times this week and there is a lot of new commercial activity. Three local communities are in a dispute about who controls access to the cave. The older, lower entrance is now closed and the upper entrance is very commercial (think US border crossing). Fees are charged for looking in the pit, rappelling, etc. We were told our photography would cost us $500 US per person. We have visited many caves in the Xilitla area over the last two weeks and have had to pay fees for parking, rappelling and looking. Nothing necessarily bad about financially helping the locals, but all the caution tape, wooden platforms and scores of kids asking for money to watch your car have dramatically changed the personality of the local experience. [Texascavers] A call for surveyors to Colorado Bend State Park this weekend
This weekend, we have booked the conference center in which all participants should stay. Get there Friday night if possible, or Saturday morning by 10am at the very latest. There is no limit to the number of participants, and you need not RSVP because there is room for all. You need to be there on Saturday by 10am to sign the release form and be assigned to a project. Staying until Sunday morning is recommended. To get to the conference center... Take note of when you cross the cattle guard and enter the park. Shortly after you enter, there will be a gravel road to the left (with a stop sign for those on the side road joining the main road). Follow that road to the huge gate. The gate will be unlocked, but will probably be closed. Once you figure out how to get through the gate, please leave it in the same state as you found it. Follow the road down to near the river where it banks hard right into the parking area. Don't fall in the creek on your way across the walking bridge or the piranhas will eat you alive. We really need sketchers and sets of survey instruments and gps units, so please bring who and what you can. Email or call for further information: Dale Barnard, barnardd...@yahoo.com, 512-847-1521 Terry Holsinger, tr...@spynet.com, 512-443-4241 Bring some extra food or snacks if you are inclined to share at the conference center. [Texascavers] Reminder: This is Colorado Bend State Park weekend
This weekend, 10/7 to 10/9, is the CBSP caving project weekend. There's caves to survey, land to be walked, bad-air caves to check out, and cave descriptions to be written. Be sure to arrive Friday night or by 10am Saturday morning at the latest. If you've never been there before and need more information, feel free to contact Dale at barnardd...@yahoo.com or Terry at tr...@spynet.com. Terry Holsinger was just out at the park and reports that the ticks are out and looking for cavers to feast on. Also, he says that air quality in many caves is very poor. Please expect to work in bad-air caves. Maybe the January trip will have better air quality. [Texascavers] questions about driving a rental van into Mexico
I'd appreciate it if someone who has driven a rental van into Mexico could email me. I am wondering which rental companies are willing to let you drive their vehicles into Mexico, what paperwork is needed at the border, and whether it is any different to insure a rental than it is to insure your own vehicle. [Texascavers] CBSP update (directions, a road detour, etc.)
See this note from Peggy (who works at the park) if you're going to Colorado Bend State Park. Sounds like about a 15-minute detour. See you there! Awesome weather on the way. Great for campfire circles at night and hiking/caving in the day. BTW, for new people who might be coming, if you have any questions, my cell phone # is 512-506-1113. I'll arrive out there very late tonight. Terry Holsinger will probably be out there in the morning or late tonight. Carpool if you can. Here's the link to the directions to find the cavers' camp: http://www.cavetexas.org/projct.html#cbsp. Note that the road now detours around the superintendent's house, but the road log should still be pretty close to accurate. [Texascavers] 1973: The best year for the Texas Caver? A note from Glenn Darilek
Here's a note I got from Glenn Darilek, who was the editor of the Texas Caver back in 1973. Apparently, that was the year that it contained the most pages and/or the most issues released on-time. Dale My son Christopher emailed me the thread about when I was the editor of the Texas Caver, and that year being the largest ever. Maybe you can put this on the cavetex list, as I do not subscribe. I want to give most of the credit to the members of the Alamo Area Chapter, who did most of the work. I can still remember Karen Clement (now Kastning), Maggie Allison, Steve Fleming, Mike Walsh, John Graves, Scott Harden, Wayne Russell, Chuck Stuehme, my wife Ruth, and I know a lot others who gave one Saturday each month to get the issue out. The contributors deserve a lot of credit also. Of course, they were too numerous to mention. Perhaps the greatest credit for putting the Texas Caver back on track was James Jasek, who took care of subscriptions, printed, and mailed the Caver ON TIME every month. That was a monumental achievement by a top notch caver. It was the 1973 Texas Caver that we did. There had been a hiatus in publishing, and I don't think we got any approval or anything, but we just took the ball and ran with it. I also remember that was the year that the Texas Caver went metric (not without a few slip ups.) That was back in the day of IBM Selectric typewriters, with no word processing, spell checkers, grammar checkers, etc. We put out almost 400 pages in 12 issues and the subscription price was $4.00! Anyway, this nostalgia was a nice break in the day for me. [Texascavers] TCR's survey contest
There will be a survey contest this year at TCR, thanks mainly to Bev Shade. Check at registration for instructions on how to enter and who to give your data to (probably to me) *before dinner*. There will be good prizes for the winning team. Teams typically consist of two people, and I suggest that both members read the instruments (fore-shot and back-shot, perhaps) to ensure the greatest accuracy. There is not normally sketching done in this contest--it's mainly a fun challenge for vector accuracy. There may be some loaner instruments available. Check at registration for all the details. Re: [Texascavers] The TEXAS CAVER--RIP???
I suggest that Gill's article on the Texas Caver be published in the next Texas Caver. Dale ___ Texascavers mailing list Texascavers@texascavers.com http://texascavers.com/mailman/listinfo/texascavers_texascavers.com
