The City of Austin is working to explore features of unknown depth to determine their ability to return water to the aquifer. Activity Details: Volunteers will meet at the front gate for a brief orientation at which they will be required to sign liability release forms. They will then drive from gate to the site. Volunteers will use shovels, rock bars, and buckets to move material. City staff will provide all tools, and have water and Gatorade coolers on site. Participants will want to bring bottles or canteens that they can refill from these coolers. Clothing Required: Participants must wear closed toed shoes or boots for hiking on rugged terrain, ankle support is vital. Long-sleeved shirts, lightweight in warm weather, are recommended but not required for sun protection and from potential scratches when walking near vines and uncut trees. [Texascavers] UT Grotto Meeting - Web Feb 1
Howdy Caver, You are invited to the UT Grotto Meeting in Room 2.48 Painter Hall - Wed Feb 1, 2012 7:45 - 9:00 PM Come out for Elections where you can contribute to something really cool and help to make a difference. Every position is open where majority vote can elevate you to officer status. As always, it is guaranteed fun and fellowship with Austin Texas Cavers. Bill Stone will present the Program for the evening as: Recent Explorations in Hellhole Cave, West Virginia Hellhole Cave and Schoolhouse Cave, located in Germany Valley, Pendleton County, West Virginia are historic east coast U.S. vertical caves that have lore dating back to the earliest days of the National Speleological Society, to a time when vertical caving techniques consisted of body rappeling and climbing out via cable ladder. They are described vividly in early books on caving, notably in Halliday's "Depths of the Earth". Schoolhouse was made into the substance of legend in Tom Culverwell's famous carbon sketches (still available at Amazon ! ) which depict bold explorers in Jules Vernian settings. Despite all the early attention both caves remained relatively short, but highly technical. Hellhole had a 55m spectacular freefall entrance drop and led to approximately 2 kilometers of very large, bat-harboring tunnels. Perseverance Dome -- potentially in excess of 120m high, has been discovered at the southern exploration limit. Vickie Siegel and Bill Stone have participated in many camps in Hellhole and have just returned from a 4 day Christmas climbing push to Perseverance Dome. The talk will provide a general history of Hellhole exploration with a focus on the climbing of the highestdomes in the system. Before the meeting, take advantage of Sao Paulo www.saopaulos.net for happy hour specials. This area is the best place to park and meet folks walking over to the meeting. Re: [Texascavers] calendars of events
Mixon, UT Grotto Calendar lists our events and those of interest to our members. All events sent to our webmaster webmas...@utgrotto.org or mentioned at our meetings are posted promptly. We are not the sole source for every caving activity out there. There are other forums where caving information are listed where you obviously have the time to review daily, yet refuse to post or request its posting. If you are unhappy and unwilling to contribute in a positive manner, that is just too bad. The rest of you, come check out how kick ass and fun the UT Grotto meetings are. UT Grotto elections are at the next meeting where any of you willing and able can step up to continue in our 60+ year tradition of caving, fun, and fellowship. The 2010 expedition included the connection of three caves, dropping a 244m pit into one of the largest chambers in the world, pushing upstream in a giant river trunk, flying a kite in a cave, and finding more leads than we knew what to do with. Did I mention the howling air and sporting water? Come get blown away and check out the great program. As always, it is guaranteed fun and fellowship with Austin Texas Cavers.
