J2 EXPEDITION – CLOTHING DRIVE

Donate your USED CLOTHING

Looking for mainly small, medium adult and kid sizes.

Bill Stone and the USDCT needs our support to help maintain the friendly
support of local relations for his upcoming J2 Expedition.
http://www.usdct.org/j2_2013.php

Bill is leaving for J2 on February 4 with several trucks to follow on
February 7.

The village of San Francisco Chapulapa (staging point for J2) requests
clothing for the children and poorer members of the village.

This is a great opportunity to clear out those unworn items in your closets
to help lift the spirits of our Southern neighbors who welcome us along
with our Cave Exploration habit.

USDCT is a 501(c3) non-profit, so any donations are tax-deductible.

Bring clothes to the UT Grotto meeting on Wednesday January 30th. Contact
billst...@stoneaerospace.com for additional
information.

I would be happy to pick up your donations.

Bexar Grotto to Austin. She has worked toward the re-survey of a great
cave with a 24.8 meter dome room and will share some great photos as well
as the aspects of a local project that was close enough to include
weeknight trips.
Bryce Smith will start the program with a short talk - Gypsum Caves in the
Panhandle
Bryce is a relatively new caver who participated in Jim Kennedy's trip to
panhandle to seek out and survey gypsum caves. Come out for the fun and
fellowship in Austin Texas and check out the adventures of these young
cavers.

For information on Underground Texas Grotto activities, please see
www.utgrotto.org
Officer contact, trip reports, event calendar, and new caver training links
to beginner trips or vertical rope training are available.

Before the meeting, take advantage of Sao Paulo www.saopaulos.net for
happy hour specials. This area is the best place to park and meet folks
walking over to the meeting. Then after the official meeting, we continue
with the decades long tradition to reconvene for burgers, beer, and tall
tales of caving at Posse East. www.posse-east.com

The UT Grotto Program calendar is wide open and needs you, the caver with
photos and a story to share about your adventures, scientific research, or
something else really cool. Contact me.

Gary Franklin
UT Grotto
512-585-6057

Karst Exploration
Project Name and Location: Karst Exploration, Little Bear Management Area,
central Hays County.

Date and Time: Saturday, May 5, 2012 9a.m. to 1pm

Register at:
http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/water/wildland/onlineregistration/EcoWebEvents.cfm

Logistics: Participants will meet at the Little Bear gate between Buda and
Driftwood and then drive to the work location on the property. Directions
will be sent upon registration. Gates will be locked once work day begins,
so please be prompt. This property is not open to the public except for
volunteer or educational events.

Age and Physical Limits: Participants must be physically able to dig, move
large amounts of material, and/or work in tight spaces underground.
Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

Activity Goal: To remove debris and large rocks from depressions and
openings to determine the presence or absence of karst features.

Activity Background: The Water Quality Protection Lands are located in the
Edwards Aquifer recharge zone. These properties contain many karst
features, some as yet undiscovered. The City of Austin is working to
explore features of unknown depth to determine their ability to return
water to the aquifer.

Activity Details: Volunteers will meet at the front gate for a brief
orientation at which they will be required to sign liability release forms.
They will then drive from gate to the site. Volunteers will use shovels,
rock bars, and buckets to move material. City staff will provide all tools,
and have water and Gatorade coolers on site. Participants will want to
bring bottles or canteens that they can refill from these coolers.

Clothing Required: Participants must wear closed toed shoes or boots for
hiking on rugged terrain, ankle support is vital. Long-sleeved shirts,
lightweight in warm weather, are recommended but not required for sun
protection and from potential scratches when walking near vines and uncut
trees.

Participants Need to Bring: water bottle that will last them through the
morning. We also ask that volunteers bring their personal cave gear if they
have it.
Essential Project Needs and Safety Considerations:
Activity will occur in cloudy or drizzly conditions, but will be cancelled
in the event of heavy rain, or lightning.
Bathroom facilities are unavailable on site. Those with allergies to bee
stings or fire ants should be prepared as necessary. Nearest medical
facility is approximately 25 minutes away. A first aid kit will be
available on site. There is the possibility participants may encounter
snakes, spiders, scorpions and other wildlife.
Work gloves will be provided.

Howdy Caver,

February 15, 2011 from 7:45PM- 9:00PM
University of Texas Campus in 2.48 Painter Hall (156 West 24th Street,

Jean Krejca will be presenting the Program for the evening
Recent Sump Dives in Texas at O-9 Well, Reeds Cave, and Blowing Sink
Jean’s adventures include sharing in the fun where it takes a few friends
to haul gear down to the sump. She knows that Caves don’t end at the sump,
but it takes additional effort to push the passage when it is flooded.
Come check out the great program and for the fun and fellowship with
Austin Texas Cavers.

Contact me.

Howdy Caver,

You are invited to the UT Grotto Meeting in Room 2.48 Painter Hall - Wed
Feb 1, 2012 7:45 - 9:00 PM

Come out for Elections where you can contribute to something really cool
and help to make a difference. Every position is open where majority vote
can elevate you to officer status. As always, it is guaranteed fun and
fellowship with Austin Texas Cavers.

Bill Stone will present the Program for the evening as:
Recent Explorations in Hellhole Cave, West Virginia

Hellhole Cave and Schoolhouse Cave, located in Germany Valley, Pendleton
County, West Virginia are historic east coast U.S. vertical caves that have
lore dating back to the earliest days of the National Speleological
Society, to a time when vertical caving techniques consisted of body
rappeling and climbing out via cable ladder. They are described vividly in
early books on caving, notably in Halliday's "Depths of the Earth".
Schoolhouse was made into the substance of legend in Tom Culverwell's
famous carbon sketches (still available at Amazon ! ) which depict bold
explorers in Jules Vernian settings. Despite all the early attention both
caves remained relatively short, but highly technical. Hellhole had a 55m
spectacular freefall entrance drop and led to approximately 2 kilometers of
very large, bat-harboring tunnels. Perseverance Dome -- potentially in
excess of 120m high, has been discovered at the southern exploration limit.
Vickie Siegel and Bill Stone have participated in many camps in Hellhole
and have just returned from a 4 day Christmas climbing push to Perseverance
Dome. The talk will provide a general history of Hellhole exploration with
a focus on the climbing of the highestdomes in the system.

Before the meeting, take advantage of Sao Paulo www.saopaulos.net for

Re: [Texascavers] calendars of events

2012-01-21 Thread Gary Franklin
Mixon,

UT Grotto Calendar lists our events and those of interest to our members.
All events sent to our webmaster webmas...@utgrotto.org or mentioned at
our meetings are posted promptly.
We are not the sole source for every caving activity out there.

There are other forums where caving information are listed where you
obviously have the time to review daily, yet refuse to post or request its
posting. If you are unhappy and unwilling to contribute in a positive
manner, that is just too bad.

The rest of you, come check out how kick ass and fun the UT Grotto meetings
are.
UT Grotto elections are at the next meeting where any of you willing and
able can step up to continue in our 60+ year tradition of caving, fun, and
fellowship.

Tongzi 2010: Big Caves, Big Air, Big Water, Where Almost Everything Seems

Exploration in Tongzi began in 2007 followed with annual expeditions. The

into one of the largest chambers in the world, pushing upstream in a giant
river trunk, flying a kite in a cave, and finding more leads than we knew

[Texascavers] UT Grotto Meeting - WED Jan 4, 2012

2012-01-02 Thread Gary Franklin
Howdy Caver,

You are cordially invited to attend the Underground Texas Grotto meeting on
Wednesday January 04, 2012 from 7:45 PM - 9:00 PM
University of Texas Campus in 2.48 Painter Hall (156 West 24th Street,
Austin TX 78712) http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/pai.html

Ben Schwartz will be presenting the Program for the evening –
Tongzi 2010: Big Caves, Big Air, Big Water, Where Almost Everything Seems
to be Big in China.

Exploration in Tongzi began in 2007 followed with annual expeditions. The
2010 expedition included the connection of three caves, dropping a 244m pit
into one of the largest chambers in the world, pushing upstream in a giant
river trunk, flying a kite in a cave, and finding more leads than we knew
what to do with. Did I mention the howling air and sporting water? Come
get blown away and check out the great program. As always, it is
guaranteed fun and fellowship with Austin Texas Cavers.

The UT Grotto needs you, YES YOU !!!, the caver with photos and a story to
share about your adventures, scientific research, or something else really
cool. Contact me.

Sincerely,

Gary Franklin
