LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -
KCBD 11 in Lubbock

A mystery tunnel is creating quite a buzz in a north Lubbock neighborhood.

Lee Smithwick discovered it on his property this week, when part of his yard
collapsed.

"We were watering the yard and we came out and the whole sprinkler system and
everything sank," Smithwick said.

Smithwick says he thought it was a sinkhole, but then he saw railroad ties.

He alerted fire and police departments and upon further examination, they
discovered it was a hidden tunnel, braced with railroad ties.

Apparently one broke, causing the collapse.

Now the question is, who built it?

Smithwick says local historians have come out to see the tunnel for themselves.

"First they thought it might be a bunker, but it's definitely a tunnel. Nobody
knows who built it or why they would build it. They're thinking maybe it's
associated with the railroad back in 1909, but you're looking at an underground
tunnel for 100 years."

Smithwick says they've drilled a few holes in the ground, and it appears the
tunnel runs underneath the road in front of his house.

He says city inspectors have also come out, and they're meeting Thursday to
figure out if they need take action.

The area has been marked off with caution tape.

We'll continue to follow this story online and on the air at KCBD NewsChannel
11.

Sound as if it is gonna be hard to organize a party for Christmas. Lets plan a
late winter / early spring caving party to Abyss, Ess or even Parks Ranch for
the last weekend in Febuary. Which coincidentally is the next available
weekend off at this moment. We could even bring gifts.

Just my thoughts, chances are I wouldn’t be able to attend anything else.

Howdy y'all,

Here is the first announcement for the 33rd Annual Texas Cavers Reunion.
This year TCR will be on the 3100 acre Hidden Falls Adventure Park
(www.hiddenfallsadventurepark.com) on the weekend of October 15-17. The
ranch is conveniently located just 5 miles east of Marble Falls on FM1431.
There will be lots of shady camping. You can bring your 4WD, ATV, dirt
bike, or mountain bike and enjoy the off-road trails throughout the
property. It is likely that we will once again offer the Slow Race so brush

up on your off-road driving skills. More info may be found at
www.oztotl.com. We will have the usual fun stuff.

Hope to see you there!

I agree Bill and thanks to Patrick for his input to this matter. Looking
ahead I will not be able to make the next meeting but would like to add
something to the agenda.

A cave trip, to say Ess Cave, Amazing Maze, 5 Mouth, or anything else
relatively near. Set up an after caving meeting around a campfire, sipping
on some Crema de Almendrado and some discussion about this situation as to
what the PBSS wants, needs, and expects from the NPS in regards to our
volunteerism (Pros and Cons for PBSS). How about September 4th. It's a
holiday weekend and I will be off work. Everybody even remotely interested
in this subject should attend.

Starting next Friday I will most likely be out of reach for a week or so.
The Caribbean is calling my name.

All,
I suggest that we (meaning the PBSS) set up a meeting with the NPS and
have a agreement (Memorandum of Understanding) as to who does what and who
gets credit for the work. This way the CRF won't be getting credit for the
hours and hard work thet the PBSS is essentially doing on it's on...It might

also point out what obligations the NPS has to have access, what specific
tools, trucks drivers, and so on... and what we have as to exact number of
volunters...and so on...
Just a thought.

Thanks,

Thanks for keeping us up to date Jacqui.

I promise I will pay my dues soon. But I'm gonna wait till after my cruise
next week, I may need those pesos.

The Comanche springs trip for me would be much better planned on the 18th,
that's my weekend off, but do what whats good for the group there.

And as far as the rock haul goes -- Although the lack of recognition
toward the PBSS is unappreciated, especially as much as we have done toward
this project, that is not why I have done it all these years. I attended
these trips for the sheer enjoyment of caving and sharing with the public
what we do, why we do it and being able to see a hard days work being driven

satisfying to me than from some government entity who just wants to log our

I would like to keep this project going even if I won't be able to make all
hauls (damned work). If help is needed in setting one up, let me know and I

The July 13th meeting of the Permian Basin Speleological Society opened at
1901, an unofficial opening to be sure (no gavel. Again) but an opening
nonetheless.

Attending: Tony, Bill, Walter, new (also former) member Allen Laman, and
Jacqui.

Treasurer's report: Bill Bentley reported that we again have $738.40. The
health and stability of the treasury moved us right along to new business as

Bill made a motion that we lower our dues to $10.00. Bill's motion was
seconded by Walter and discussion included the information that we used to
need $15.00 from each member because we were mailing out the Hole News and
we don't do that anymore.

Other facts that came out in discussion: PBSS currently has 15 members. Bill

has sent emails to all cavers whose memberships have expired, asking if they

would like to re-up. We do have some student members who may have budgeting
issues (they are students, after all) so we didn't discuss for long before
we decided to create a student rate of $5.00 (full-time students only) and
also reduce the associate rate to $5.00.

The new rate of $10.00 with associate memberships at $5.00 and full-time
students also at $5.00 passed unanimously. The change is effective
immediately.

Bill is working on a trip to Comanche Springs in Ft. Stockton but it needs
to be a survey trip. Bill is looking into finding a sketcher-mapper person
who may wish to join us for this trip. Potential dates September 11th or
25th. Lori Hales has a contact for a cave near Balmorhea and she hopes to
have us set up for a trip in the fall or winter. A couple of PBSSers have
been to this cave a long, long time ago.

Walter reported from the Fort Stanton project and passed along a personal
invitation from Steve Peerman to Bill Bentley to involve himself in the Fort

Stanton Project. (We were assured that all of us are welcome, even without
the personal invitation).

We decided to poll the membership regarding whether or not we want to do
another Carlsbad rock haul.

We did not set another Five Mouth dig date but will plan another dig when it

cools off a bit.

Bill asked if anyone was interested in a not-caving trip to Big Bend as his
permit is good through December 2010. We all said yes, we are.

We briefly discussed NSS's request that Internal Organizations consider the
direction they want to see taken by the NSS and submit appropriate motions
to the Board of Governors. No motions came to anybody's mind.

We received contact information for a company that makes patches and will
make as few as 50. Jacqui will look into how much it would cost for us to
have some new PBSS patches made.

The meeting closed at 2001 hours.

Re: [PBSS] meeting notes from 03/09/10

2010-03-12 Thread Kerry Lowery
This (at least at the moment) looks like a good weekend for me.

*We discussed the weekend of April 3rd for the next Five Mouth dig. This
is
Easter weekend so we are floating the date to see if there's interest before

approaching the landowners. The February Five Mouth dig was cancelled due to

plan changes causing a lack of attendance and we don't want to do that
again. We will be looking into April 24th for a possible Amazing Maze trip
and if Amazing Maze doesn't work out, that weekend is another possibility
for Five Mouth.

RE: [Texascavers] Query: gassing snake dens

2010-02-24 Thread Kerry Lowery
Gassing of snake dens is mostly a practice of the past. Snake hunters have
figgered out that once you gas a den the snakes no longer want to live
there. It can take years, if ever, for the snakes to rehabitate the den.
Just like big deer leases and hunters who try to manage their herd, snake
hunters want to do the same. They do not want to eradicate what they are
hunting so they manage the area to keep the populations in check.

I am usually the one that gets volunteered to check for slithery critters,
and have the pleasure to remove them from an entrance when necessary.

For everyone else's health and sanity.

I'm trying to get a handle on how widespread is the practice of gassing
snake dens in Texas. "Gassing" is often used by rattlesnake collectors
associated with roundups. They typically use a garden sprayer or a hose to
deliver gasoline into crevices and retreats with the intention of driving
snakes to the surface. Are any of you aware of this practice in karst
areas? Have you ever smelled gas at a cave entrance? Please respond
off-line.

The Permian Basin Speleological Society (PBSS) and The Permian Basin Outing

we would need to do is set up an information booth with members present to
talk about and hand out some literature related to our clubs. We would not
be selling or promoting any product.

Booth space, price, amount of people allowed in per booth, etc.

Subject: [PBSS] Dec. Meeting and Christmas Party

All,

We have often dispensed with the regular December meeting (which would be the
8th) and taken care of whatever business we have at the Christmas Party.

However...

This year if I am not mistaken (and I could be, since I was not at the Nov.
meeting) we have two Vice Pres candidates, Patrick Ray and Sharon Long. At
least Sharon has not told me she does not want to be Vice Pres anymore, and
since she is a member of both PBSS and NSS she certainly can be re-elected,
regardless of where she lives.

If we have two candidates then we need to have an election at the Dec. meeting.
Several members will not be at the Christmas Party at Ess (in fact, the only
for sure attendees I know of are Barry & Donna, and me) so I do not think we
can have a meeting as part of the Christmas Party.

I am sorry to take so long to raise this issue but December hit me across the
face like a dead pink salmon and I am just regaining my balance.

Before I send out a regular meeting announcement for Tues the 8th at Murray's
I'd appreciate any feedback. (I would look up the minutes from the last meeting
in case I missed something but I am at work and don't have the minutes from the
last meeting to hand).

Is anyone going to SWR in Albuquerque? Looks like I will be headed that way
tomorrow am and would like to post an announcement before I leave. I will not
have email after I leave home. I did, however, replace my phone, same #.

Anyway, I'd appreciate input. Jacqui

Pay the entance fee to any Texas State Park and fishing is free within

caving is much better family activity.

Fishing is a great family activity and can help them by allowing them to

Ted,
I agree with you that park user fees should be increased as it is still
a bargain for what they offer but think that some concession should be
made for those low income families who may be adversely affected. I just
don't have a plan that would not discriminate and would increase
available funds for maintenance and adequate pay for park employees who
are understaffed and probably underpaid. Low income and minority tax
paying citizens already seem to be the primary users of our state parks,
especially the parks nearest large metropolitan areas. The main problem
is obviously our elected legislature who do not allocate the fair amount
(all) of the tax dollars that are generated from taxes on fishing and
hunting that were originally put in place solely for this purpose. The
voting public should have EASIER access to how some of these legislators
vote on this funding and it should be more highly publicized by the
interested parties. Then we could send them a message.

Funds have been cut as a matter of course no matter who is elected. It's
the left hind tit of the pork barrel.

With that attitude, you might as well sink a few gas or oil wells in the

I know we talked about this a while back, but it is in the news
again.

It is my opinion, that "user fees" are a good idea for government
programs.

I am self-employed and I see how all the money comes in and goes
out of my business. It frustates me and probably others, that money
given to government programs is not always used efficiently.

I believe the private sector could run some of the parks better than
the government can.( Look at how commercial caves are managed
versus how a government cave is managed. )

It seems obvious that user fees should reflect inflation and the value
of the product.Look at stamps.Sometimes there is a rate
increase.Do you buy less stamps?

I like the idea of life-memberships, annual car passes, and anything
to make the customer happy.

I think most people know when they accept a government job, that they
are going to make less money than they are going to make working
for a oil corporation or bank, etc.But they should still be paid

fairly,

especially for their over-time.

So I can see why user fees need to increase. ( Look at what it cost
to get into an up-scale nightclub in large cities on New Year's Eve.

It

is sometimes $ 1,000, and you will have to pass their test to
get in. )Or to park at a NBA championship?

In 2 or 3 Houston city parks, it cost money to park your car everyday,
except Sunday. And the fines are steep.

It is also my opinion, that the cost of living has never been higher,
( and as hard on the poor ),
but also certain parts of our quality of life have greatly improved.

David
