Re: [Texascavers] TCMA feedback

2011-10-05 Thread Linda Palit
Well, having candidates is a good thing. I am very pleased we have
candidates willing to serve. TCMA board takes a great deal of time, energy,
and work. Giving the members a chance to vote is also a good thing. If a
person is not elected as board member, there is still much work to do, and
all meetings are open (with the option of short private sessions). To not
be voted a board member is not an awful thing -- lots involved and slots to
fill as far as skills. We need more involvement, but constructive criticism
is always welcome, David, so feel free to volunteer to help out in some
capacity. We would welcome your assistance (and you have helped us in the
past!).

The reason for not having 5 positions is that the current bylaws do not
provide for that. Fairness is relative, and no matter what efforts are
made, somebody thinks it is unfair.

Thanks for the feedback, and feel free to vote.

[Texascavers] TCMA at TCR

2011-10-09 Thread Linda Palit
Hey, Cavers!

TCR is almost here! People will be at Flat Creek Thursday setting up (and
we can always use more help), and TCMA will be putting up the usual tables
for membership, the new *Passages*, and tshirt sales! We also have a
special offering that you will hear more about later.

There will be *NO Garage Sale* this year; we were needing lots of trucks to
take things that did not sell to Good Will or whatever. Save those gems for
the auction at Spring Conventionl.

Sunday we will have breakfast at 7:30 and our meeting will be at 9am. You
will be able to hear from the candidates running for TCMA Board at the
meeting. The election is by email or snail mail this year.

Start packing! It's going to be a great one.

[Texascavers] TCMA at TCR

2011-10-12 Thread Linda Palit
TCR is almost her, and the weather looks grand.
It will be a busy weekend, but fit in a few TCMA events while you are there.

Saturday the TCMA tent and table will be up, and we'd love to have you come
by, visit, buy a t-shirt or two, and renew your membership. We also have
continuing donations if you are willing to support the ongoing work of TCMA,
A new edition of *Passages* will also be available.

Sunday morning we will be having the TCMA breakfast for a $5 donation.
Please bring your own coffee cup and plate; we will have a variety of
breakfast tacos.

After breakfast, there will be a TCMA Members Meeting at 9am, Our elections
are by email or snail mail this year, but the candidates will ask for your
support and talk about what they see as the future for TCMA.

Locations in TAG are much more public than in Texas--long term practice for
better or worse, and partly because there are so many caves. Sinking Cove may
be a SCCI cave- guess I'll look that up.

[Texascavers] San Antonio Road Work

2011-04-01 Thread Linda Palit
In SA, 1604 intersection with IH35 will be closed 9pm to morning Friday
night and Saturday night and Sunday night. If you are coming south late,
avoid that intersection or expect slow detours.

Just heard the above on the radio and checked it on TxDot. Seems to be a
place to avoid after 9pm tonight.

Looking forward to seeing you at Spring Convention.

Thanks!! Also to Stephen Bryant for organising the serving line so y'all

Big thanks to Crash for taking and returning all the cooks equipment in the

I especially want to thank Ellie for a great job, once again, and for
Michael for holding down registration.

And a HUGE thanks to Fritz Holt for pinch hitting for me for the Kickapoo
Cavern trips Sunday.

I really wanted to be more active in the whole Convention weekend, but a
rude wakeup call at 3 AM from a 6-7mm size kidney stone changed my plans.

Instead, my lovely wife accompanied me to Val Verde Hospital in Del Rio
where I spent most of Saturday in a morphine-induced haze until a stent was
inserted.

I came out of surgery around the time of the TSA Business Meeting and would
have much rather been at the Convention than in recovery.

All in all, it was a very interesting weekend and thanks to all who helped
and, thank God, my wife, who never goes to caving events ordinarily, decided
to come to this one!

Great location, as well, and I hope we go there again!

[Texascavers] Conservation Workshop at Cave Without a Name

2011-03-25 Thread Linda Palit
A Cave Conservation and Restoration Workshop will be held at Cave Without a
Name on April 9 and10th.

I am helping coordinate registration, and wanted to remind all that this
will be in two weeks. We need the names of those interested in attending to
verify numbers.

Cave damage, whether unintentional or malicious in nature, degrades the
beauty of the underground world. Some damage can be undone through
restoration and repair. Join Cave Conservation Specialists Jim Werker and
Val Hildrith Werker in a two day workshop focusing on conservation,
restoration and speleothem repair. Learn do-no-harm techniques and
experience hands-on satisfaction as you see previously hidden areas of
beauty re-emerge.

Cave Restoration Workshop Details

. Check in at 9am Saturday at CWAN

. Workshop hours - 9:30 to 5pm Saturday, 9am to noon Sunday

. Camping available on site

. Please bring any clean restoration tools you have (new sponges,
buckets, scrub brushes, vinyl or latex gloves, knee pads, spray bottles,
restoration sprayers, plastic or nylon scrapers for mud on flowstone

. Please observe WNS decontamination procedures on all personal and
resto gear

. Workshop limited to first 25 people

Get well soon Mark, we missed ya!

I would like to thank, again: Chris, Leslie and Vico for spending most of
the day in the kitchen (as well as time before cooking and shopping), and
the various other people who stopped by and were given a knife to use!
Thanks!! Also to Stephen Bryant for organising the serving line so y'all

Big thanks to Crash for taking and returning all the cooks equipment in the
TSA (TSS?) trailer, allowing me to enjoy (?!) the ride out there on my

Will post as can. Thanks for all the concern and well wishing. Mimi

[Texascavers] Caver, articles, and interest

2012-05-18 Thread Linda Palit
I have read the responses to Denise's and Mark's appeals with interest.
Probably the hardest part of being Caver editor is getting articles, or
maybe it is that sneaking feeling that comes with most volunteer positions
that "nobody understands or appreciates.".

I will do an occasional series of interviews, both of newer and "seasoned"
cavers. I will have the first one to Mark by the end of the month. I
would also welcome suggestions of newer cavers to interview from grottos
not near SA.

Perhaps somebody could do some compilation from grotto newsletters (don't
read it if you think it is a bad idea)', somebody might do a gear review or
safety/techniques review occasionally, a review of events, and some of the
other ideas I read. Taking the initiative to take on one od these tasks is
pretty simple once you get past the idea that nobody wants to read that.

A few picture essays in the online part of the TC might be nice too..

It is always busy, but I do like the Caver.

[Texascavers] Close all caves?

2012-04-13 Thread Linda Palit
Forwarded from SWR

As you may know, the CBD is petitioning the White House to close all
public caves and fine private landowners who keep their caves open.
This is a serious threat to the caves, which are often vandalized when
responsible visitation is removed, and does nothing to protect the
bats since WNS is spread bat-to-bat. Human contributions to spread can
be effectively controlled with decon, assuming a human vector ever
existed. Closing publicly owned caves to the public is a threat to
conservation, a limitation of freedom, and is based on bad science,
and I am tired of not standing up to say that. If you support this
cause, please sign this counter petition to keep the caves open.

Re: [Texascavers] 2012 TSA Spring Convention *Save The Date*

2011-11-30 Thread Linda Palit
I am glad to see that so many people still feel ownership of TSA. It might
be even more effective if all those people attend the meetings and offer
their input and opinions there. I have not seen all that many at recent
TSA meetings, including the most recent one at TCR. I was not at that
meeting, since I was still cooking breakfast for the masses. I would say
that, even though we all feel ownership, the way to pass on those valuable
historical insights and to have your voice heard is to attend the meetings
and to communicate with the officers. Being an officer sometimes feels
like a thankless job, and there is often ample criticism and minimal
appreciation. So Thanks to all who are serving and have served, and cheers
to those of you who decide to serve again. Bylaws can be changed or more
meetings can be scheduled. Let's all continue to contribute to the growth
of TSA.

Bob has had a rough week, getting a diagnosis of esophageal cancer, and
then facing multiple tests to determine the prognosis. He will NOT get the
results of any tests until after the holidays. He and the family welcome
your positive thoughts, prayers, and positive communication. No BooHoo's or
hysteria of course, but feel free to email him good wishes if you are so
inclined. His address is bcow...@satx.rr.com or home is 5806 Cactus Sun, SA

Cheers, and have wonderful holidays,
