[Texascavers] UTG Meeting Wed 1.15.20 7:30pm

2020-01-14 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
Greetings Cavers,

We meet again for the first time in 2020 this coming Wednesday, January
15th at 7:30 pm at The High Road on Dawson - 700 Dawson Road, Austin, TX
78704, off Barton Springs Road. Please, no outside food or beverages. They
have happy hours from 5-7 pm for $2-$3 beers, otherwise beer is $3-$4 and a
burger with fries is $5. Arrive early to order!

Our featured speaker for the week is Bill Stone, who will tell us about a
recent visit to Canada’s deepest cave, Mount Bisaro, at -670m deep.

You don't need to be a member of the UT Grotto to attend this presentation
- just show up! You can learn how to become a member at the meeting, if
that interests you.

You can also learn about more caving opportunities locally, and throughout
the world. Several state level caving projects have started up again for
the season, and you may hear about other trips you can join locally,
throughout Texas, and the world.

You can also learn more about how to go caving safely, and where to learn
how to do vertical work from cavers at the meeting.

Hearing problems at caver presentations.
I find cupping my hand behind my ear really makes a difference...until I can
get closer...or the speaker starts speaking louder.
Shari's father went thru many types of hearing aids, as many do not help, not
comfortable,  squeal.etc.
Preston in Outer Browder where if there was a caver meeting tonight, there
would not he much traffic problems. KSS phone mtg. tomorrow, and does that save
a lot of driving time.

2019-11-19 Thread Diana Tomchick
I solved this “bad hearing problem like me" long ago by getting a pair of
hearing aids. Works wonders.

Although of course it’s a bad speaker habit to talk to the screen when your
audience is in the opposite direction, and it always amazes me to see young
scientists in post-graduate training that still do it. If you can’t look your
audience in the eyeballs when speaking, how do you know if they’re still awake,
or thinking about throwing spitballs at you? If I had done that when teaching
freshman chemistry, the students would have quietly left the room while my back
was turned.

Will someone please bring a mike? It can be very difficult to hear a lot of
the announcements and especially the speakers who usually face the screen when
presenting. I've talked to a number of people who have bad hearing like me,
but also others without such problems who still have trouble. There have been
shouts of "speak louder". A mike is worth a try.

Greetings Cavers,
Join us for this meeting at Walt's place in the Lakeway area while we settle

We will hear from Randy Gibson with the US Fish and Wildlife Service's Aquatic
Resources Center. His expertise is in invertebrate zoology and aquatic

communities of springs in east, central, and west Texas and threatened and
endangered species of the Edwards Aquifer (e.g. Devils River minnow, Comal
Springs riffle beetle, Comal Springs dryopid beetle, and Peck’s cave amphipod).
He is currently working on captive breeding strategies for these listed
species and working with others to learn more about the rare and relatively
unknown spring and cave invertebrates of Texas.

[Texascavers] UTG meeting program announcement

2007-03-26 Thread George Veni
The International Congress of Speleology (ICS) happens only once every four
years. It is an incredible opportunity for cavers and cave scientists from
around the world to meet and share what are often fantastic discoveries. In
many ways, the ICS is like an NSS Convention - but on steroids! And the
next one is coming to Kerrville, Texas in July 2009. During tomorrow's UT
Grotto meeting I will give a presentation that describes the ICS, plus the
many things that need to be done to prepare for it. Cavers from around the
country are actively working on it, but Texas cavers will be especially
needed for many on-site tasks that only Texas cavers can do. Come and get
psyched about the ICS and learn how you can help host the most significant
caving event to hit the Western Hemisphere.

This will be an update to the program I gave to Bexar Grotto last month.
While it isn't practical for me to travel to meet every grotto, I will
provide another updated version of the program for the TSA Convention in
the Spring (depending on the convention date, I may be out of town). For
anyone wanting more information about the ICS, visit and bookmark
www.ics2009.us and look for some major updates in the coming months.

George
