Re: [Texascavers] urban growth
I head a story of a couple of kids getting stuck in an antlion kind of thing in that cave under luby's parking lot. I think some local caver got a citation of bravery for going in there to get em out. Was that dead-dog cave? -WaV On 8/15/07, Fritz Holt wrote: > > Any cave is a good cave to me also as they all serve a purpose. Any cave is a good cave to me also as they all serve a purpose. When you have to work hard to navigate one you like to be rewarded with nice formations or some other interesting features. What I saw of Whirlpool had neither. However, cave entrances are always interesting. Rebecca, Austin has one of the most progressive watershed protection ordinances in the country. See the link below: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/watershed/ordinances.htm There is a wealth of information about it on their website. As a caver; I have to say that the ordinances do not go far enough to protect caves, karst or regional watersheds. Another source is the Texas Cave Conservancy. They have been helping protect caves from development in the northwestern suburbs of Austin. Their website is: http://texascaves.org/ On 8/13/07 5:12 PM, "Rebecca Boon" wrote: > Hi Texas Cavers! > > I don't know very much about caves..I'm writing a paper for school and would > like to know if Austin's growth has ever required the destruction of cave > systems. I could have sworn that Preston thought that Airman's was the pits. No pun intended. I guess that some, especially the younger set, enjoy crawling in tight spaces and getting muddy. I don't mind climbing but I prefer caves in which one can stand up and walk. Still able but still a Geezer. - Fritz _ From: Michael Sisson [mailto:mikeh...@austin.rr.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 14, 2007 2:15 PM To: Fritz Holt Cc: Preston Forsythe; George Nincehelser; David Locklear; Rebecca Boon; Texascavers@texascavers.com Subject: Re: [Texascavers] urban growth Airman's is a great cave and I'd go anytime. Re: [Texascavers] urban growth
I recall someone telling me there is a cave covered up underneath a Luby's parking lot somewhere in Austin. She might want to go to the library and look up articles under a subdivision built called Tarry Town ( or something like that. ) That is where Austin Caverns is or was. In 1986, I was at TCR and a drunk old timer who called himself "Eck" or something like that, told me there was once a big cave near downtown Austin, and it was covered up. I always assumed he was referring to Austin Caverns, which isn't anywhere near downtown. He also told me he swam miles up Honeycreek back in the 60's in his bathing suit.
