 Dear Mr Sarma,
Bhasmam Sami  reveals the humorous writer in you. I read from first line to
last line with interest. All persons cannot be a writer or humorous writer. It
is a "varaprasadam".
There is nothing achieved by envying the writers. They are writers. I include
many QA postings of doctor Tiny Nair, famous cardiologist of Kerala. He is a
born writer to write on medical items with humor and simplicity.

Friends  You haven't heard d the last of Bhasmam Sami. No, this one is not
about his amorous exploits.
Bhasmam Sami, apart from being handsome, was also a man of great erudition,
intelligence and wit. He was endowed with a golden voice. His rendition of the
Bhagavad Geeta would transfix audiences. His pravachanams(preachings), full of
dramatic flourishes, made his lady audiences swoon. And left the men grinding
their teeth in anger, jealousy and frustration.

It was the month of Chitrai,(April month)  a busy time for the agraharam
(Brahmin village) folks. The men were busy, from dawn to dusk preparing their
fields for the ensuing monsoon crop. The women were engaged in the myriad
preparations that marks this busiest season in the year. Vadumangai (tender
mangoes)had to be processed into pickles to last the whole year. Tonnes of
karuvadam (pretzels) dough had to be prepared and  processed. Vadams(papadom)
had to be made. Tamaraikazangu (lotus flower stems)had to be procured from the
fast drying ponds in the neighbourhood, cleaned, sliced , steamed, salted and
dried

And all these, the vadam, karuvadam, tamarai kazangu, had to be vigilantly
protected from the thieving crows, daring cows and of course the boisterous
marauding urchins on school vacation who lurked in every corner of the village
right from the bathing tank and the river bank to the various fruit orchards
and the temple courtyards. The tamarind and the tuvara paruppu had to be
sunned. Elevan, vellirikkai (pumpkins)  and other hardy vegetables had to be
bought from the nearby Vallangi chanduy (weekly itinerant market) and hung up
in urees in the kitchen to last through the monsoon.

Dusk brought in little respite for these bone weary women. All the stuff put
out to dry had to be hauled in. Everything had to be covered with
eetthapaai(date leaf mats) and weighted down with stones to safe-keep them from
the marauding rats at night.. The men too would return home dog-tired, perform
their sandhyavandanam, and retire indoors as soon as they heard the temple
melakarans hurried staccato beat on the maddalam (temple drum)  marking the
end of deeparadhana (evening prayer) After a light meal, they would crash out
on the mats and surrender themselves to a sleep of the just.

Chitrai is also the month of utsavams (festivals )in the various temples. So
what with the hectic work at home and in the fields and with the lavish feasts
and the festivities at the utsavams, time flew along on gossamer wings.

It was during one such hectic Chitrai (April )month, that there came to the
village a giant of a North Indian Swami (holy man) . He measured 63 head to
toe. Some of us who were kids at the time felt he was the tallest man on earth.
And as we grew in age, his height too grew in our imagination. Kittu, the
postmasters son was ready to swear on everything he held holy, that the swami
was as tall and as huge as the arasa maram on the Ayappankavu grounds.

Many were the stories of the Swamis prowess. He was reputed to be over 200
years old. People whispered in hushed voices that he could drag a herd of ten
elephants by a rope tied to his huge flowing beard. Some said he could recite
the entire bhagwatam front to back and front in a jiffy.

The swami used to hold court under a huge banyan tree on the riverbank. He
would sing bhajans and abhangs in a mellifluous voice. So naturally, the simple
village folk flocked to him in droves. Women of all castes---Iyer, Nair,
Pisharody, Nambiar ,Warrier --- virtually every single caste mobbed the
swami. They heaped all kinds of goodies on him. They prostrated at his feet
seeking his blessings. They eagerly hung on to every word he spoke, every line
of every bhajan he sang. The elderly paaties fetched and warmed water for his
bath, massaged his feet, cooked his meals and fanned him while he slept. All
routine chores were abandoned. Life in the village, particularly of the devout
womenfolk, young and old, centered on the swami.

The gigantic swami basked in this adulation showered on him. He was enjoying
every moment of it. But after some time this adulation for the swami by their
womenfolk, left the men fuming. They felt neglected. Rejected. They were

 Dear Mr Sarmaji,
To arrest the growth of weeds in the paddy fields, it is a must to clear weeds
at definite intervals. If not paddy fields will become weed fields.
What Mr revered Narayanaswamy doing is  that. Whenever I feel necessary, I
point out to him, it is time for coffee, tiffin, rest etc. Sometimes I point
out hiding weeds also.

Just like after a rain Mutthanga  grass grows up, and removed in time, Mr
Narayanaswamy simply do the same for the goodness of the groups.

Mr Sarma, who else will write Mangalaya dharana manthram is chanted by the

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN DAY 8TH MAR 2024

2024-03-07 Thread Rajaram Krishnamurthy
In 2024, UNESCO joins its voice to that of the entire UN family by
celebrating this International Women’s Day under the theme “invest in
women: accelerate progress”, which is aligned with the priority theme for
the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW-68).

SHE CRAFTS THE DAWN OF THE BRIGHTER FACE
In the heart's delicate web, women weave, Grace and strength, in every
reprieve. Their essence, a symphony, pure and true, Infinite hues, like
morning dew.

In her eyes, galaxies softly dance, Embracing worlds with a single glance.
Her spirit, a tapestry of resilience and light, Guiding souls through the
darkest night.

With words that spark, like stars ablaze, She crafts the dawn of a brighter
phase. In her touch, healing whispers flow, A sanctuary where dreams can
grow.

Through laughter's melody, she paints the air, A song of joy, beyond
compare. In the depths of silence, her wisdom gleams, A beacon of hope in
the shadow's seams.

In the garden of life, she blooms and thrives, Nurturing love, where the
soul survives. A masterpiece of creation, endlessly spun, Woman, the muse,
in every one. K RAJARAM IRS 7324

II There is a saying in Manu Smruti. Where the women are worshipped, there
deities will dwell and there will be prosperity. Throughout the many years
of Vedic culture, women have always been given the highest level of respect
and freedom, but also protection and safety. The Women Rishis though very
few contributed a lot for the cause of society and Vedas.

"yatra nāryaś cā pūjyante ramante tatra devatāḥ।

yatraitāstu na pūjyante sarvāstatrāphalāḥ kriyāḥ॥"

This verse translates to:

"Where women are revered, there the gods are pleased; but where they are
not honored, no sacred rite yields rewards."

III Manu says:

1. “The mouth of a woman is always pure” V, 130.

2. “Women must be honoured and adorned by their fathers, husbands,
brothers, and brothers-in-law, who desire their own welfare” III, 55.

3. “Where women are honoured, there the *Devas* (gods) are pleased; but
where they are dishonoured, no sacred rite yields rewards” III, 56.

4. "Where female relations live in grief, the family soon wholly perishes;
but that family where they are not unhappy ever prospers” III, 57.

5. “In like manner, care must be taken of barren women, of those who have
no sons, of those whose family is extinct, of wives and widows faithful to
their lords, and of women afflicted with diseases” VIII, 28.

6. “A righteous king must punish like thieves those relatives who
appropriate the property of such females during their lifetime” VIII, 29.

7. “In order to protect women and Brahmins, he who kills in the cause of
right commits no sin” VIII, 349.

8. “One’s daughter is the highest object of tenderness; hence, if one is
offended by her, one must bear it without resentment” IV, 185. (Compare
this with the statements of the missionaries that the Hindu religion
sanctions the killing of girls).

9. “A maternal aunt, the wife of a maternal uncle, a mother-in-law, and a
paternal aunt, must be honoured like the wife of one’s spiritual teacher;
they are equal to the wife of one’s spiritual teacher” II, 131.

(In India, the wife of a spiritual teacher is regarded as a living goddess).

10. “Towards the sister of one’s father and of one’s mother and towards
one’s elder sister, one must behave as towards one’s mother; but the
mother’ is more venerable than they” II, 133.

11. “But the teacher is ten times more venerable than the sub-teacher, the
father a hundred times more than the teacher, but the mother a thousand
times more than the father” II, 145.

12. “A chaste wife, who after the death of her husband constantly remains
chaste, reaches heaven, though she have no son, just like those chaste men"
V, 160. (Compare this with the statements of the missionaries that Hindu
widows are cursed by their religion).

13. “In that family where the husband is pleased with his wife and the wife
with her husband, happiness will assuredly be lasting” III, 60.

14. “Offspring, the due performance of religious rites, faithful service,
highest conjugal happiness, and heavenly bliss for the ancestors and one’s
self, depend upon the wife alone” IX, 28.

15. “Let mutual fidelity continue till death; this may be considered as a
summary of the highest law for husband and wife” IX, 101.

>From other Hindu laws:

“Woman possesses an unequalled means of purification: they never become
(entirely) foul”.

“Women are pure in all limbs”.

1. “Man is strength, woman is beauty; he is the reason that governs and she
is the wisdom that moderates”.

2. “He who despises woman despises his mother”.

3. “He who is cursed by a woman is cursed by God”.

4. “The tears of a woman call down the fire of heaven on those who make
them flow”.

5. “Evil to him who laughs at a woman’s sufferings; God shall laugh at his
prayers”.

6. “The songs of women are sweet in the ears of the Lord; men should not,
if they wish to be heard, sing the praises of God without

Dear YMji I neither favour nor disfavour that maan in CBE; however I
appreciate his knowledge of our scriptures. He said as reported by a media
man is as under where whaT HE SPOKE OF AKARSHANA OF SIVARATRI IS AS UNDER:
(BUT NOT AS YOU HAVE WRITTEN SAID ANYWHERE):
"As we go about our busy lives, it’s easy to overlook the force that powers
us all. This is the energy that makes every living being alive, that drives
us to breathe, eat, walk, and carry out our daily activities. This energy
is what we celebrate on Mahashivratri, a festival that invites us to
remember and honor the divine energy known as “Shiva.”

Shiva, the supreme power of the universe, is said to reside in all things
living and non-living. The saints of yore have described this energy as an
unknown and mysterious force that is responsible for driving existence
itself. Mahashivratri is a time to acknowledge the power of Shiva, the
energy that sustains us all.

the founder and head of the Isha Foundation, the statue weighs around 500
tones (490 long tons; 550 short tons). Adiyogi statue.Significances of
shivaratri

Shivaratri is a festival of great significance in Hinduism, dedicated to
Lord Shiva, one of the most revered deities in the religion. Lord Shiva is
regarded as the destroyer of evil and the creator of good, and is also
known as the lord of yoga and meditation. The festival of Shivaratri is
celebrated to honor his greatness, and also to commemorate the day of his
marriage to Goddess Parvati.

The night of Shivaratri is said to be a time of spiritual awakening, when
Lord Shiva performs the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and
destruction. It is believed that the veil between the physical and
spiritual worlds is thinnest on this night, making it an ideal time for
spiritual practices like meditation, yoga, and introspection. By doing so,
one can deepen their connection to the divine and experience spiritual
growth.

In addition to its spiritual significance, Shivaratri also has scientific
importance. The festival celebrates the convergence of Shiva and Shakti,
the masculine and feminine energies that exist in the universe. The
celebration of Shivaratri dispels ignorance and spreads the light of
knowledge, making us aware of the universe and invoking the supreme power
that created all beings. It is believed that the chanting of mantras like
“Om Namah Shivaya” and “Mahamritunjaya” all night on Shivaratri can have a
positive impact on the human body, mind, and soul.

Overall, the festival of Shivaratri is a reminder of the power and
greatness of Lord Shiva, and a celebration of spiritual awakening,
knowledge, and divine connection. It encourages us to embrace spiritual
practices and deepen our connection to the divine, and to cultivate the
qualities of love, compassion, and wisdom in our lives.

There are several legends associated with the origin of Shivaratri, and
here are a few of the most popular ones:

   1. *The Marriage of Shiva and Parvati*: According to Hindu mythology,
Shivaratri marks the day when Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati. It is
believed that on this day, the divine couple got married in a grand
ceremony, and since then, Shivaratri has been celebrated as a day of great
   significance.
   2. *The Night of Lord Shiva’s Dance*: Another legend says that
Shivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance,
known as Tandava. It is believed that during his dance, Lord Shiva created
and destroyed the universe, and the day is celebrated to honor his power
   and strength.
   3. *The Churning of the Ocean*: According to Hindu mythology, during the
churning of the ocean, a deadly poison known as Halahala emerged from the
depths. Lord Shiva consumed the poison to save the world from destruction,
and the day is celebrated to commemorate his bravery.
   4. *The Legend of Hunter*: A popular legend associated with Shivaratri
tells the story of a hunter who unknowingly worshipped Lord Shiva while
waiting in a forest. He had unknowingly offered leaves from a Bilva tree
(believed to be a sacred tree) to a Shivalinga, which pleased Lord Shiva.
The story teaches the lesson that true devotion to Lord Shiva can be found
   anywhere, even in unexpected places.
   5. *The Legend of Lingodbhava*: Another legend states that Lord Shiva
manifested himself in the form of a Linga on the day of Shivaratri. It is
believed that Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu once had an argument over who was
more powerful. Lord Shiva appeared before them in the form of a Linga and
challenged them to find the beginning and end of the Linga. Lord Vishnu
conceded defeat, while Lord Brahma lied about finding the end. Lord Shiva
punished Lord Brahma for lying and thus emerged in the form of a Linga on
   Shivaratri.
   6. *The Legend of Mandhata*: According to this legend, King Mandhata was
a devout follower of Lord Shiva.

Re: [iyer123] Bhasmam Sami - A short Story

2024-03-07 Thread Rajaram Krishnamurthy
Iread the humour and i thought of adding another episode of bhasama sami as
under:"Once, there was a devoted disciple named Bhasma Sami, known for his
unwavering faith in his guru. Bhasma Sami was always eager to learn and
absorb the teachings of his revered master.

One day, Bhasma Sami approached his guru with a perplexed expression on his
face. "Guruji," he said, "I've been practicing meditation diligently, but I
still can't seem to quiet my mind. Thoughts keep popping up like wild
monkeys!"

The guru smiled knowingly and replied, "Ah, Bhasma Sami, the mind is indeed
like a mischievous monkey, swinging from thought to thought. But fear not,
my dear disciple. I have just the solution for you."

Excitedly, Bhasma Sami leaned in, eager to hear the sage advice.

The guru leaned in closer and whispered, "Bhasma Sami, when the monkeys of
the mind chatter too loudly, simply give them some bananas!"

Bhasma Sami looked puzzled. "Bananas, Guruji?"

"Yes, my son," the guru chuckled. "Bananas! But not just any bananas. These
bananas are the fruits of wisdom and laughter. Offer your mind the sweet
nourishment of humor, and watch how effortlessly it settles."

Bhasma Sami nodded, understanding dawning upon him. From that day forward,
whenever his mind became overrun with noisy thoughts, he'd sprinkle a dash
of humor into his practice, and lo and behold, the monkeys of the mind
would quieten down, savoring the delightful bananas of laughter.

And so, with humor as his ally, Bhasma Sami continued his spiritual
journey, navigating the ups and downs of the monkey mind with a
lighthearted smile. K Rajaram IRS 8324

*From the Editor's Desk*

*Dear Reader,*

Traditionally women have been home makers, nurturers, in charge of home and
hearth. While women around the world comprise 50% of the population, access
to financial services and leveraging it to gain financial independence, has
been slow over the decades. Several socio-economic factors ranging from
cultural barriers, gender biases etc. have kept women on the backburner of
financial inclusion. However, there has been a significant rise in women
investors, women-owned enterprises and women accessing credit. Read more to
know about this potential segment of investor.

*Regards,*

*NSDL – Your Depository*

*Invest in Women, Accelerate progress*

*It is abundantly clear that if economies, nations, neighborhoods, and
communities wish to thrive, financial services providers must focus on
women.*

Let me start by asking a question. Do you know how many women there are in
the world? 3.95 billion. With India and China ranked 1st and 2nd in the
‘most populous’ category, the number of women in these two countries alone
comprise approx.1.3 billion.

With approx. *36.3% of Indians deemed urban, a median age of 28.2, and
approx. 28% of women in the age group of 20-49 (Source 1)*, combined with
various other socio-economic factors, including the oft-repeated Internet
penetration of around 48%, high adoption, and increase in smartphone usage,
it would seem but natural that women would be a natural target segment for
financial services providers, fintech companies, NBFCs, and other allied
businesses.

*The truth is...*

Numbers don’t lie. As per the *‘**India Inequality Report 2022**’ less than
32% of India own a mobile phone (Source 2)*. The report goes on to say that
women have handsets that don’t cost much, aren’t as sophisticated, and more
importantly, owning a mobile device in many households is a decision taken
by a man. In rural India, **Internet subscribers number less than 34 per
100, according to the report*.

Despite disheartening numbers, there are other factors that weave a
compelling narrative for women. *MSMEs contribute 45% to India’s exports
and 30% to the GDP. 20.37% of MSME owners are women (Source 3).* Why do
women-led businesses form only *10% of the gross loan portfolio of most
financial services providers (Source 4)?* Lack of access to credit,
solutions, tools, and resources that have focused only on the largely male
consumers are some of the oft-cited reasons.

Cultural biases, gender biases, fewer asset holdings in their name, and
lack of a formal ‘credit’ score or credit history, are several such factors
that are barriers to women being financially included, and financially
independent.

*Fintech's can forge a new path*

Technology can create a level playing field for everyone. Banking and
financial services providers can leverage technology as a solution and
different channels as mediums for delivery. Better outreach, and
improvement of financial awareness through digital literacy programs, can
lower the barriers to important information for understanding and
decision-making. For example, a women’s empowerment group like SEWA (Self
Employed Women’s Association) uses pre-recorded messages relayed over a
voice call or through WhatsApp. Relevant and important information through
SMS reminders can also be an important use of mobile technology.

Digital banking through platform solutions like FINTAP by FIA can prove to
be easy to use, convenient, safe, and fast. Checking a bank account, or
withdrawals and deposits become so much easier with the aid of Bank Sakhis
or CSP-operated banking kiosks, or doorstep banking, services that
encourage women to walk towards financial independence.

Bank sakhis often act as financial advisors, urging women to think of their
child’s education or health and promote investments into
Government security schemes, digital gold with an investment as low as
Rs.10/-, or even inform them of loans available for a business,
agriculture, or other investments.

*Meanwhile...*

We all know that women contribute significantly to the well-being of
families, societies, and even business. The ascent of women entrepreneurs
in almost every business vertical is a vindication of the fact that women
can do better when they are provided the right impetus. Mint, in a recent
article, states that the *AMFI annual report for 2022-2023 rev

KR 1 PM2,5 killers: Dr Tiny nair,it seems like you're referring
to PM2.5, which stands for Particulate Matter 2.5. PM2.5 refers to tiny
particles or droplets in the air that are 2.5 micrometres or smaller in
diameter. These particles can include various pollutants such as dust,
pollen, smoke, and other particles emitted from vehicles, industrial
processes, and natural sources. PM2.5 is particularly concerning because it
can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, posing
significant health risks, especially for people with respiratory and
cardiovascular conditions.Monitoring PM2.5 levels is essential for
understanding air quality and its potential impact on public health.
Governments and environmental agencies often measure and report PM2.5
levels as part of air quality monitoring efforts to help inform the public
and take appropriate actions to mitigate exposure to harmful air pollutants.

  2WHAT IS BEING DONE:Addressing PM2.5 pollution requires
a combination
of individual actions and government policies aimed at reducing emissions
and improving air quality. {KR: mere N 95 will not be effective since you
may have to remove it for eating and bathing; and zoom PM2.5 can enter)

Here are some measures that individuals and governments can adopt:

Individual Actions:

Reduce Vehicle Use: opt for public transportation, carpooling, biking, or
walking whenever possible to reduce vehicle emissions.

Use Cleaner Transportation: Choose vehicles with lower emissions, such as
electric or hybrid cars.

Energy Efficiency: Conserve energy at home and work by using
energy-efficient appliances, lighting, and heating/cooling systems.

Limit Wood Burning: Avoid using wood-burning stoves or fireplaces,
especially during high pollution periods.

Proper Waste Disposal: Reduce, reuse, and recycle to minimize waste, as
burning trash contributes to air pollution.

Support Clean Energy: Advocate for renewable energy sources and support
policies that promote clean energy production.

Government Policies:

Regulate Emissions: Enforce regulations and standards on industrial
emissions, vehicle emissions, and other sources of pollution.

Promote Clean Energy: Offer incentives and subsidies for renewable energy
projects and technologies.

Improve Public Transportation: Invest in public transportation
infrastructure to encourage its use and reduce reliance on private vehicles.

Urban Planning: Implement urban planning strategies that prioritize
walking, biking, and public transportation to reduce traffic congestion and
emissions.

Air Quality Monitoring: Enhance monitoring systems to track PM2.5 levels
and other pollutants, providing real-time data to the public.

Public Awareness Campaigns: Educate the public about the health risks of
air pollution and encourage actions to reduce emissions and improve air
quality.

Enforce Emission Standards: Strictly enforce emission standards for
vehicles, industries, and power plants through regular monitoring and
penalties for non-compliance.

International Cooperation:

Collaboration: Foster international cooperation and agreements to address
transboundary air pollution and share best practices for reducing emissions.

Research and Development: Invest in research and development of cleaner
technologies and pollution control methods to mitigate air pollution's
adverse effects.

By combining individual efforts with strong government policies and
international collaboration, it's possible to mitigate PM2.5 pollution and
improve air quality for present and future generations.

 Sir,
I never read the word sea  in the quote. Boat can travel in rivers, lakes  and
even in ponds.
The quote  simply means, it is better to change the boat than attending
leakage, which is more productive.

Rather than frequently  repairing an old motor, it is better to purchase a new
motor

A person not able to write a paragraph perfectly , threatening me, that he
knows my service. Look back your service when you were in lower services
in income tax department?

Do you know I was Inquiry officer while in Tamilnadu circle and D P C
Member while in Salem?. Do you know I was the first to install P C M in
Tamilnadu circle?.

Do you know I was the best lecturer awardee in Trivandrum Training centre?.
Do you know I was Divisional Engineer, Technical Head in Calicut Telecom

in Kerala Circle office? Many more

Dear Sri Gopalakrishnan

Died-in-the-wool rebel Rajaram K alias KR ex-IRS alias Karuppan-saami does
not believe in our samskaarams. So he never underwent naama-karanam,
upanayanam, or vivaaham. He therefore never ever tied a
turmeric-coloured thaali thread on a woman. He reviles and insults as
ignoramuses all vaadhyaars (braahmana priests).

*He and his intended bedmate just appeared before a civil servant, an
assistant Registrar, and signed a contract to live as husband and wife. No
gattu-vaadhyam; no maangalya soothram, no manthram, no staaleepaakam.*

When he dies, there will be no anthiyeshti kramam. He will be just buried
in a hole in the ground like dead dogs and cats.

Bhasma jabalaa upanishad minor one saiva in sanskrit

2024-03-07 Thread Rajaram Krishnamurthy
*Bhasmajabala Upanishad* (Sanskrit
: भस्मजाबाल उपनिषत्) is
one of the minor Shaiva Upanishads
 of Hinduism written in Sanskrit
 language It is associated
with the *Atharvaveda
*.The *Bhasmajabala Upanishad*,
in a manner similar to Brihajjabala Upanishad
 and Akshamalika
Upanishad describes
Vibhuti (Bhasma) or sacred ash, and
Rudraksha beads as symbols and for body art. The text describes how the ash
and beads are to be produced, its application on the body. The importance
of holy city of Varanasi and its Shiva
temple are
mentioned in the text. Klaus Klostermaier
 classifies the text
along with the *Brihajjabala Upanishad
*, the *Rudrakshajabala
Upanishad *,
the *Kalagni
Rudra Upanishad * and
the *Akshamalika Upanishad
* as Shaiva texts that
explain symbolism of rites and objects of worship in Shaivism

Bhasma-Jabala Upanishad

*Bhasma Jabala Upanishad*

Om! O Devas, may we hear with our ears what is auspicious;
May we see with our eyes what is auspicious, O ye worthy of worship!
May we enjoy the term of life allotted by the Devas,
Praising them with our body and limbs steady!
May the glorious Indra bless us!
May the all-knowing Sun bless us!
May Garuda, the thunderbolt for evil, bless us!
May Brihaspati grant us well-being!
Om! Let there be Peace in me!
Let there be Peace in my environment!
Let there be Peace in the forces that act on me!

I am that Absolute Brahman only which, after being understood in its true
aspect (as one with this Atman), entirely burns into ashes (Bhasma) the
ignorance (illusion or Maya) of considering this universe to be existing
(real) and separate from one's own Self, through the destructive fire of
(Supreme) Knowledge!

Once Bhusunda, a descendant of Jabali went to the Kailas Peak and
prostrated before Lord Mahadeva Siva, who is the form of Omkara and who is
beyond the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra.

Bhusunda worshiped Siva with great devotion again and again through fruits,
flowers and leaves. Then he questioned Lord Siva: "Lord! Kindly impart to
me the essential knowledge of all the Vedas, embodying the process and
technique of using the Bhasma (sacred ash), because it is the only means
for attaining Liberation. What is the Bhasma made of? Where should it be
applied? What are the Mantras to be recited? Who are the persons fitted for
this? What are the rules regarding it? Kindly instruct me, born from
depressed class."

The kind Lord Paramesvara said: At first the devotee after understanding
the influence of the celestial at the prescribed time, should fetch some
sacred and pure cow-dung early in the morning, keep it in the leaf of a
Palasa-tree and then dry it with the Vedic Mantra 'Tryambakam' etc. (in the
sun).

Then he should burn that dry cow-dung, placed in a convenient place, with
any fire that is available, according to the rules laid down in the Grihya
Sutras of his sect, and then pour Ahutis of sesame and paddy together with
ghee, with the Mantra 'Somaya Svaha'. The number of Ahutis should be 1008,
or if possible, 1 ½ times this. The instruments for pouring ghee should be
made of leaf; in that case man does not commit any sin.

Then, at the end, the devotee should offer the oblation of Sveshtakruta at
the time of Purna-Ahuti, with the Mantra 'Tryambakam' etc. With the same
Mantra Bali (an offering) should be placed in the eight directions (of the
fire).

That Bhasma should be sprinkled with water by the Gayatri Mantra. Then that
sacred ash should be placed in a gold, silver, copper or earthen vessel and
sprinkled again with the Rudra Mantras. It should then be kept in a clean
and decent place.

Then the devotee should honour the Brahmins with a grand feast. Then only
he will become purified. Then he should take the Bhasma from the vessel
with the Pancha-Brahma-Mantras, 'Manastoka', 'Sadyo Jatam', etc., and with
the idea that 'fire is Bhasma, air is Bhasma, water is Bhasma, earth is
Bhasma, ether is Bhasma, gods are Bhasma, Rishis are Bhasma, all this
universe and existence are Bhasma; I prostrate to this sacred and purifying
Bhasma which destroys all my sins.'

Thus, the devotee should keep a little Bhasma with the clean palm of his
left hand saying, 'Vamadevaya' (this is to Vamadeva) sprinkling with the
Man

Dear folks
The monkeys jumping around, scratching their bottoms in the mind of our
notorious blasphemer Rajaram K alias K Rajaram ex-IRS 8324 alias
Karuppan-chaami will never be subdued by offering bananas.
No.  His jumping and jostling mind as a rudraaksha poonai will ever be
populated by snarling and salivating tailless foxes which disturb him even when
eating, sleeping and other unmentionable pursuits.
Humour is not a word in his vocabulary.

Bhasma Sami looked puzzled. "Bananas, Guruji?"

"Yes, my son," the guru chuckled. "Bananas! But not just any bananas. These

bought from the nearby Vallangi chanduy (weekly itinerant market) and hung up
in urees in the kitchen to last through the monsoon.

Dusk brought in little respite for these bone weary women. All the stuff put
out to dry had to be hauled in. Everything had to be covered with
eetthapaai(date leaf mats) and weighted down with stones to safe-keep them from
the marauding rats at night.. The men too would return home dog-tired, perform
their sandhyavandanam, and retire indoors as soon as they heard the temple

end of deeparadhana (evening prayer) After a light meal, they would crash out

Chitrai is also the month of utsavams (festivals )in the various temples. So
what with the hectic work at home and in the fields and with the lavish feast
