[Therion] Best caving tablet

2015-09-14 Thread Rob Countess
I posted this on cave chat.org but no replies:

So I'm awaiting shipment of my DistoX2. I've never used one before.

I am trying to figure out what the best tablet is to use with it. I am
using Therion but I am new to that as well. I used to use Walls and before
that On Station.

I have zero experience with paperless cave surveying. I have never used
Pocketopo or Topodroid which makes it hard to decide between windows or
android. Topodroid seems to be set up well for use with Therion, but again
I have no idea; I've never used an android device only iPhone and iPad. I
see the new ipad pro has a stylus - are there cave survey/disto apps that
run on iPad?

A new windows surface pro3 tablet seems like a good idea but are there good
waterproof cases?

Xperia Z4 tablet claims IP68 - can it handle a cave without a case? I can't
seem to find any suitable rugged cases for it.

If price was not a factor what set up would you use?

Thanks

[Therion] Best caving tablet

2015-09-15 Thread Adam Sampson
That's a big question.
1rst, let's talk topodroid versus pockettopo. Topodroid draws the tick marks
for you, but has a slight learning curve. It doesn't integrate perfectly into
therion but I can help with some of the issues it has. And Marco is really
responsive in fixing problems. Topodroid is simpler, but you draw on it just
like on a pad of paper. I haven't found an iPad solution.
2nd let's talk tablets. My biggest consideration was what type of stylus.
Capacitive stylus are ok, but the lines don't match up perfectly. The nvidia
shield or similar tablet (which I am trying to review in the next couple
months) can use a #2 pencil. Then there are tablets like the surface of the
galaxy note that use a Wacom stylus and are very accurate. I suggest you might
try them out at your local electronics store to see which stylus you like.
As for waterproof...depends how wet your caves are. I use a waterproof case I
got off amazon for $15...but I don't ever submerge it. I just need to protect
from the occasional drip.

I made a typo. Pockettopo is simpler in programming. You just draw exactly what
you want.
Topodroid automates the drawing of dashes and tick marks and makes your drawing
in the cave neater.

[Therion] Best caving tablet

2015-09-15 Thread Markus Boldt
Hi,
I`am using an old Asus 696 PDA with Wmobil 6 and of course pockettopo. It works
very well. Once I have lost the original pencil in the cave and I couldn`t find
it anymore. It was not so easy, but the surveying on that day was made with my
fingernail ☺. A replacement for the original was found quick and very cheap.
BTW, I have now a second pencil in my small case and both have got a tiny hole
for a thread.
Other members have tried out some android apps. But as I have seen (2014) there
was no app which was able to kalibrate/justify the DistoX. But that is not
really a problem, I think.
Regards
Markus

[Therion] Best caving tablet

2015-09-15 Thread Footleg
I have used a Dell Axim x51v PDA for my underground drawing and data
collection since the original DistoX came out. Running PocketTopo on this
Windows Mobile OS. I find it works well, waterproofed using a beach case
(Aquapaq bags for total immersion waterproofing, or a cheap beach case for
phone/PDA). The winning features for me are the replaceable battery
(allowing larger batteries which can run the PDA all day) and low cost (2nd
hand via eBay).

TopoDroid is able to calibrate DistoX. The calibration routine is identical
with PocketTopo I think.

If price is not a problem (and weight) there are Panasonic army grade tablets
with Windows and digitizer screen.

FYI, you can use Andy from andyroid.net to emulate android on a PC if you want
to try out topodroid. However, the emulator can't use Bluetooth. So you have to
disable/deny Bluetooth and enter everything manually. Still a cheap way to try
out the program.

[Therion] Best caving tablet

2015-09-15 Thread Andrew Atkinson
I have a asus vivo tab/not 8 tablet, which I just find too big for cave
surveying, which I feel will be a problem with the one below. I think
that you need to be able to hold it on one hand while caving, which for
me makes a 6inch tablet probably the biggest, but I have not got round
to buying one as yet.
The vivo although it has a wacom tablet built in, I am not very
impressed with the accuracy, even after going through the 100+ point
calibration, gone back to my dell axim,

Andrew

[Therion] Best caving tablet

2015-09-16 Thread Footleg
I would agree that the 'hold in one hand' size of a PDA is a big plus. You
need to be able to cave with the device in your hand, and unless you only
survey large walking passages with flat floors you will appreciate
something that you can climb around the cave while holding in one hand.
Also makes packing the device for transportation through crawls and awkward
entrance series much easier. I am often surveying 3 hours from an entrance
and having a light weight compact kit means it always gets taken on
exploration trips in case we make a break through. So we often leave the
cave with data on the trip where a discovery was made.

[Therion] Best caving tablet

2015-09-16 Thread John Stevens
I have thought about using my 7” asus tablet which is about as large as I can
hold in one hand. Its worth looking as Sexy Topo (an Android version of
PocketTopo).
But I still go back to my ruggedised version of the Fujitsu Siemans Pocket Loox
N560. An RPDA with IP65 protection, or semi rugged EDA version, Ebay from about
£20. The EDA needs some extra protection but thats not too hard to do.

While these windows mobile PDA’s are so cheap, they seem to be the answer
until rugged tablets get to a sensible price.

I would agree that the 'hold in one hand' size of a PDA is a big plus. You need
to be able to cave with the device in your hand, and unless you only survey
large walking passages with flat floors you will appreciate something that you
can climb around the cave while holding in one hand. Also makes packing the
device for transportation through crawls and awkward entrance series much
easier. I am often surveying 3 hours from an entrance and having a light weight
compact kit means it always gets taken on exploration trips in case we make a
break through. So we often leave the cave with data on the trip where a
discovery was made.

[Therion] Best caving tablet

2015-09-16 Thread Adam Sampson
I'm using a 7" tablet. But I have it in a waterproof soft case (silicone?) and
I have a 4" battery charger (10,000maH) in the case with the tablet. The
battery charger makes a great handle actually.

[Therion] Best caving tablet

2015-09-29 Thread vladim...@mail.bg

A bit delayed, but here is the setup that I use.

My tablet is an 8" Samsung Note 8. Not very compact, but it is very nice
for drawing due to the larger screen. It is as large as an A5 piece of
paper, so I didn't find the switch from paper drawing cumbersome. It can be
held in one hand while surveying, although when I climb or do lots of
crawling it goes in the bag.
What I like about this model is that it supports a Wacom pen, which is much
more accurate than using the finger or a capacitive stylus.
A 6" or 7" might be nice too. I tried a 4" smartphone too. It is fine for
collecting the measurements and rough sketches, but since I work with
Topodroid I prefer to draw as detailed as possible in the cave and only do
minor corrections later in Therion.

I have attached a few images of the packing that I use. The tablet goes in
a waterproof pocket. The Disto also has a clear case, which protects the
keyboard and lenses from mud, but is not waterproof. In most cases I use
the black Wacom stylus in the picture. It is not waterproof, but it hasn't
failed yet despite getting wet a few times and replacements are not
expensive. When I don't use it it goes in the small plastic tube. There is
also a small bluish capacitive pen for muddy or very wet caves, but it is
not that accurate.

The yellow bag has rigid plastic inserts at both sides ot the tablet
pocket(the one in the back) that protect it from impacts and being bent.
The front pocket contains the Disto, pens, some station marking stuff,
etc.

Overal I find the whole package light and easy to cary in most cases except
the most muddy or narrow crawls. Other combinations might work even better,
but I still haven't tried so many to compare.

Best
Vladimir

I use a Trimble Recon. Rugged and waterproof but expensive. I've used it for
many years now without any problems.
