Hi Danielo I would welcome any suggestions. Unfortunately I don't currently have my code on github -- I'll look into it. regards On Tuesday, November 4, 2014 3:04:25 PM UTC+2, Danielo Rodríguez wrote: > > Hello Matabelle, > > Reviewing your plugin code again I found some unnecessary steps and some > things that may break the widget stability. [tw] Re: [TW5] Matabelle maketid widget
Hi Alberto The consensus appears to favour abandoning backward compatibility -- especially as the functionality of several of the widgets have to some extent been duplicated with action widgets in the core. I think I shall update the widgets 'as is' to be compatible with version 5.1.x -- then, as deficiencies in the functionality of action widgets become apparent, I can modify them accordingly to cover any needed functionality. There is always more than one way to skin a cat :-) regards On Tuesday, November 4, 2014 12:30:38 PM UTC+2, Alberto Molina wrote: > > Hi Danielo and Matabele, > > I've been out of TW for the last weeks because I had no time. Hello Matabelle, Reviewing your plugin code again I found some unnecessary steps and some things that may break the widget stability. If you have any github repo maybe I can state those things there. [tw] Re: [TW5] Matabelle maketid widget
Hi Danielo and Matabele, I've been out of TW for the last weeks because I had no time. Concerning your discussion, here goes my point of view. I enjoyed and used a lot Danielo's and Matabele's plugins, but since my TW for Scholars is outdated and all my own code needs to be revised, and since the core now affords complex actions with buttons, I'm going to start from scratch with tw's stable release and see how far I can go that way, without plugins. My own policy is not to use plugins unless they are necessary. But now I don't know what can be done with maketid and other plugins that is not possible with the core alone. And I don't know if it's worth the effort to just update them, or to ensure backward compatibility with pre-stable versions like mine because I don't want to stay in beta for ever. I would rather prefer new plugins that extend 5.1.5 capabilities. You guys are doing a great job for end users like me. Thanks again for that! [tw] Re: [TW5] Matabelle maketid widget
Hi Danielo Changing the form of the messages seems to make sense -- a global search and replace will then fix all of the necessary changes in the wiki. It would be inconvenient if only some of the widgets retained the old form and needed manual editing. This will break compatibility with the beta editions any way -- so I guess abandoning other aspects of backward compatibility with the beta versions seems to be the way to go. I don't see much need to change the widget logic for the <$maketid>, <$setfield> and <$mangletags> widgets. I think a change in the logic of the <$iftid> and <$iftref> widgets might be in order. It seems that these should be action widgets, rather than stacked widgets -- using them in the stack was confusing. regards On Tuesday, November 4, 2014 12:00:40 AM UTC+2, Danielo Rodríguez wrote: > > Changing the message to fit current TW naming convention is a small change > from my point of view. Changing the message to fit current TW naming convention is a small change from my point of view. People updating their TWs will have to change all those messages and classes so it's should not be a problem changing your also. In fact could be confusing changing all widget messages except yours. At a first instance you were talking about changing widget logic, wich is much work than just changing a message prefix. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "TiddlyWiki" group. [tw] Re: [TW5] Matabelle maketid widget
Hi Danielo Should I update the form of the widget message calls e.g. change 'tw-setfield' to 'tm-setfield'? This would maintain consistency with other widget messages but break backward compatibility -- or I could listen for both the old form of the messages (for backward compatibility) and the new form for new users. If I change the 'tw-newtiddler' message call in the <$maketid> widget to 'tm-newtiddler' -- this breaks backward compatibility with the beta versions of TW5 (and I think maintaining two versions will be confusing.) I suppose it would be possible to issue both forms of the message, which would work for both the beta versions and versions 5.1.x I wish to avoid numerous changes which break backward compatibility thus necessitating numerous code changes for those who have made use of the widgets. I would appreciate some ideas on which way to go ... regards On Monday, November 3, 2014 7:54:02 PM UTC+2, Danielo Rodríguez wrote: > > Hello Matabelle > > If you want to have widgets that behaves differently I think you should > create a new one. [tw] Re: [TW5] Matabelle maketid widget
Hello Matabelle If you want to have widgets that behaves differently I think you should create a new one. Changing the way something works radically is not usually a good idea. What could do people like Alberto or David? They have to change the whole wiki logic!! I don't think your widgets are redundant with the actions widgets. In fact I have your widget working together with some action widgets. Your widget makes things the actions widget does not, like intercepting messages or creating Tiddlers silently. If you want to add more functionality it's OK for me, but I don't want to see you break backwards compatibility. For me is not actually a problem since I have coding skills but not everyone is on the same situation. [tw] Re: [TW5] Matabelle maketid widget
Hi Danielo OK -- thanks for the thumbs up. Updating the widgets for TW 5.1.x whilst keeping the existing mechanism is trivial. I was contemplating some way to make the widgets play together with action widgets. Perhaps this is redundant and I should keep the widget mechanism as is and let the action widgets evolve separately on their own. Some of the functionality has been superceded to some extent by action widgets, although with action widgets, the target tiddler has to be respecified for each widget call. Anyway, I am open to suggestions as to how I should proceed with the changes to my button widgets -- especially as to how they will now be used alongside action widgets. regards On Friday, October 31, 2014 11:17:51 AM UTC+2, Danielo Rodríguez wrote: > > Hello, > > This is just to encourage Matabelle to update their widgets.
