[time-nuts] TN equipment FS

2022-01-11 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned Members,
With 2 years planning coupled with stealth and deviousness we escaped CA after
selling our condo to Zillow.  We are now residing in the state of South
Carolina where it's green for hundreds and hundreds of miles in any direction
and no smog. We are in the small town of Clinton, and we're extremely happy.

Due to family health/age issues, I'm selling off all my TN equipment as a
package deal.I'm looking at around $2K plus shipping.
HP Cs with spare tube/controller , Tracor 527E, TAPR TICC, 2 TAPR TADD-2.  The
TAPR stuff has not been used.  The Tracor 527E is in IIRC good condition (it
was packed several years ago) as was the TAPR stuff

Before moving, I double boxed the HP Cs with foam/bubble wrap in each box.
Shipping weight is at least 50 lbs +.

Please contact me  by off line email only if interested.  I will ship
internationally if all costs are paid up front. YOYO for customs costs.
Regards,
Perry KM6FQV

[time-nuts] 5 Digit Panel meters

2020-09-06 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned List,
From the on and off list comments I've received I realize that I didn't provide
a fuller explanation of my proposed idea for this I apologize.
What I was proposing was to try and use the tiny panel meters fount on ebay
when you use the category listed as *Digital Panel Meters*. One listing number
is 203076543505.  Measurement range: DC: 0.000-33.000V. for $3.83 plus free
shipping.  This is just one of many listings for similar items.  As I stated in
my original post, I have no idea if they are accurate, stable or suitable to
what I proposed.
Some of the replies mentioned temperature drift and other potential problems
which may make then unsuitable for my idea.  This was to measure three
different voltages simultaneously and see if there was some useful correlation
in the readings.
This is an experimental concept idea which may or may not be useful..Sometimes
these ideas work or we learn to go to plan *B, C, or D*
Because of the low cost i felt that this might a useful idea.  Others with more
experience of these voltages and how much they do or do not change may judge my
idea as impracticable.
That's fine.

I learn from the list comments and I'd rather hear that it's not a good idea
from the members before spending the money and effort.
I do have a Fluke/Phillips 6.5 for making precise reading when needed.

Regards,
Perrier

[time-nuts] OCXO retrace, how long is reasonable?

Well, I could measure the EFC voltage every other day and if it'schanging, then

it's the DAC itself.

One can buy 5 digit LED meters on ebay for $5 each +shipping.

While I wouldn't necessarily trust their accuracy, at that price one could buy
3 or 4 and continuously measure  several variables.

[time-nuts] calibration of oscillators with WWV

Learned List,
During the discussion of using WWVB for oscillator calibration it was mentioned

My question is what would be the best accuracy one could reasonably expect

[time-nuts] FA 2 Counter variations

2020-07-01 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned List,
Checking the Ebay listings for the FA-2 counter I saw three variations. One had
just BG7TBL on the bottom of the face plate.
A second -since deleted- had BG7TBL XX- XX- (date).
A third one was labeled  BG7TBL 20190622. All had wildly different prices.
So is this just some form of date coding or is there some technical difference?

[time-nuts] Alltest used test equipment and parts

2020-05-26 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned Members,
While window shopping on Ebay sites of stuff -I'd- like- to- have -but- for
-now-dream-on I noticed that Alltest was selling over 8,000 items on Ebay.

Out of curiosity I searched the site from low + high + shipping and discovered
that they had over 600 items for less that $50.  There is a large selection  of
mini-circut combiners, spliters, RF relays, DC controlled attenuaters and other
misc. items. Some are DC to 2Ghz, others are for specific bands including the
GPS frequency. Most have SMA connectors though. A builders delight.
Also they have a number of (mostly) HP spec analyzers starting are $500 or so.
While their prices seem a bit high, most have make an offer.  One advantage
they have over other sellers is that their stuff works or is listed for parts
only.

[time-nuts] Power Supplies

2020-05-03 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned Gentlemen,
I personally dislike equipment that uses *wall warts* due to quality concerns
One inexpensive way I've powered my Lucent equipment is using used laptop power
supplies. They're easily found at HamFests or on ebay.  On Ebay prices very
wildly.  If you buy 3 or 4 they can be $5 each shipped.
Another source to consider are the Mean Well SRPS at Jameco.  They run from 55
watts on up with a wide range of voltages.  They are have spec sheets.  Some
SRPS's on ebay are cheap but their quality...

 GPSDO Questions
Learned Gentlemen,
First off, any GPSDO is better than none.
Now it's been stated on postings that some chicom GPSDO's are frequency locked
(apparently not a good idea) and those that are phase locked. So how does one
know what you are getting? I suspect asking the vendor would be pointless.
Bert posted a while back that his Tbolt occasionally had a hiccup that he was
able to find when comparing it to a HP Rb and HP Cs.
So what can do other than live with these situations, which maybe in the long
run, might for most of us, a minor unsolvable nuisance?
Also BTW are the Lucent GPSDO's a phase locked GPSDO since I have 2?

Perrier

Hi

I would guess that the vast majority of folks on the list and an even
larger percentage doing the FMT are buying their GPSDO?s on eBay.
Which ones they buy and how well the work is very much a ?that depends
sort of thing?.

The crop of devices at low(er) prices changes every 3 to 5 years. Whatever
is being torn apart right now will be contributing the low cost stuff. If you
bought
5 years ago your choices were very different. Go back 5 or 10 years past that
and
the devices change again and then again.

There?s no reason to believe that ?things were better in the old days?. Mostly
just
different.  The issues have been worked out on stuff that hit eBay 20 years
ago.
That?s just the way it works. How well they have been worked out ?. that depends
on the device and how picky you are.

This does not simply apply to GPSDO?s. A while back eBay was awash in telecom
Rb?s. Some bought so many they can?t keep track of all of them. Today a $35
listing
for an Rb is pretty unusual. That?s just supply and demand. Wait another 5 or
10
years and we probably will be awash in cheap ones again.

Right now ?entry level? GPSDO?s are still below $100 delivered. That?s not all
that
crazy compared to a lot of gear in a typical shack or on a typical bench.

OK no problemo. But it's $55. It's probably a great device, but does this
application warrant such expense?
I looked up *pulse stretcher circuits* and found over a dozen inexpensive
circuits.

DRV8662and is available from Digikey for $3.35. It is a small-pitch
device(0.5mm) but not impossible to solder.

RV-3028 is 3.2x1.5 mm in size, 1.5ppm, additionally trimmable, 45 nAstandby
current, under $3 USD in price and in stock at Mouser andDigikey.

Aswonderful as the DS3231 is, there is a newer chip from Micro Crystalthat is
smaller, more accurate than the DS3231M, much cheaper, anddraws less power

These three chips fall into the *Vaperware Parts* category. Yes, they are great
chips and I don't mind someone posting their advantages.
I believe It is a bit disingenuous to say: *It is a small-pitch device but not
impossible to solder*.
Really?  If you've dropped $750 to $1K for a stereo microscope and other
specialized soldering equipment then you can probably do it without too much
difficulty.  Or some may access to such specialized equipment.
But for us *Po Folks* hobbyist we have to stick with older but larger parts.
Now if there was a service where you could order the part soldered to a
breakout board with .1 inch breakout pins for say, $20 then using many of the
latest chips would be feasible.  But until then I believe 99.9 percent of us
have to find a commercial product or some other workaround.

[time-nuts] Phase noise principle and measuring confusion

2020-04-07 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned Gentleman,
I've read several articles on phase noise but I'm lost.
I need a *Ding-Dong* school explanation of what it is, why it's important and
how one goes about measuring it.
 Bob wrote:
Phase measurement of my GPSDO

Thequick way to do this is with a single mixer. Take something like anold 10811
and use the coarse tune to set it high in frequency by 5 to10 Hz.

Thenfeed it into an RPD-1 mixer and pull out the 5 to 10 Hz audio tone. That
tone is the *difference* between the 10811 and your device undertest.

Ifthe DUT moves 1 Hz, the audio tone changes by 1 Hz.

Ifyou measured the 10 MHz on the DUT, that 1 Hz would be a very smallshift (
0.1 ppm ). At 10 Hz it’s a 10% change. You have ‘amplified’ the change in
frequency by the ratio of 10 MHz to 10 Hz ( so amillion X increase ).

*IF*you could tack that on to the ADEV plot of your 5335 ( no, it’s notthat
simple) your 7x10^-10 at 1 second would become more 7x10^-16 at1 second.

OK, this seems to me that this is measuring frequency difference.

wrote:

Thereason its not quite that simple is that the input circuit on thecounter
really does not handle a 10 Hz audio tone as well as ithandles a 10 MHz RF
signal. Instead of getting 9 digits a second, youprobably will get three *good*
digits a second and another 6 digitsof noise.

OK, then would using a 3336A synthesizer work by using the *good* 10811 or
other 10 MHz as an external reference and provide, say, a 10 MHz + 100 Hz or 10
MHz + 1KHz work with the 5335? (I have two). Or am I missing something (or a
lot)?

[time-nuts] Key to HP 106 Performance?

2020-03-26 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned Gentlemen,
After TVB posted his HP 106 experience I became curios why it was so good after
having a HP 107.
Both schematics look extremely similar but on closer examination the 106 uses a
2.5 MHz oscillator crystal which is doubled and then fed through a 5 MHz
crystal.  The 107 uses a 5 MHz crystal but it is also fed through a 5 MHz
crystal.
Both are physically mammoth compared to the previous 100 series which allows
for more circuitry which makes both far easier to service.  Lifting however is
another issue...

Another similarity for both are the number of *factory select* with nominal
values shown.
It would be quite interesting to know how they did the process of *final
tuning*.

[time-nuts] HP 5335A and using the HPIB for control

2020-03-07 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned gentlemen,
Thanks for all the replies!

Some additional info.
I'm 79 yo and never had any programming classes or experience in programming.
My specialty was the field of maintaining medical equipment.  My tech education
in the USAF was ground radio (with tubes no less).
I wasn't aware that HPIB controllers could be ad in the $35 range.  I was also
unaware of the HP program ifo that was posted in a reply.
One proposed use of the 5335 is to place it on the 1 MHz + delta error output
of my Tracor 527 FDM looking for a LSD *long count* and also being able to just
measure a stand alone oscillators frequency for an extended time.
I'm a total newbe as far as the HPIB is concerned.  I read the info in te 5335
manual and was totally lost. So I'm trying to consider if the data information

[time-nuts] HP 5335A and using the HPIB for control

2020-03-04 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned Gentlemen,
While my TN stuff is packed for moving, I took a look at the HP 5335 spec sheet.
It appears that the gate time can be extended up to 10^7 seconds which would be
very useful.
Talking with Bob Camp off list he said that any HPIB controls would involve
some programming which is impossible to do. There is a labview home program for
about $100 but that would also require some programing.

I could make extended gate times by making a 1PPS from my 10MHz reference and
using it for the external gate start and counting it to get my desired stop
time or perhaps there is the possibility of doing an internal mod to the
counter which if it wouldn't be fairly simple, I'd rather not try.
Does anyone know of or have a program that I could put on a laptop (windoz) to
control the gate time function?  For several reasons at this time  buying
something newer like a HP53131 or equivalent to accomplish this is not feasible.
Thoughts?
Regards,
Perrier

[time-nuts] Single PS possibility

2020-02-07 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned gentlemen,
While the idea of a single supply for all devices is attractive, one faces the
risk of having everything going down with a single failure.
Perhaps using multiple boost-buck SRPS's from a large battery supply might
mitigate that risk. The vendor *Bang Good* seems to have a good reputation and
the spec's listed seem to be very good.  The output voltages are variable so it
could allow a final LDR to be on each device. The prices seem reasonable but
constant current output listed may require an additional cooling fan.
Just FFT.

[time-nuts] Fake new LPRO 101 Rb's on Ebay?

There are two vendors on Ebay selling *new* LPRO 101 Rb's for around $160 each,

[time-nuts] Digital Pots

2020-02-03 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned Gentlemen,
Thanks for the two references for affordable 10 turn precision pots.
This will allow me to go back to my original and simpler circuit of a series
string of resistors and in that string connecting the 10K10 turn pot in
parallel with one of the resistors, probably a 1K, which will be set by the
upper slightly above and the lower just below the *sweet spot* needed. It will
take a bit of juggling for each oscillator but that will be far simpler than
using 3 digital pots.

[time-nuts] digital pots Part 2

2020-01-29 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Learned Gentlemen,
I appreciate all the reply's to my questions.
Perhaps I should have added a bit more detail of my planned project after
moving.  I have 5 Lucent XO's and two Lucent Rb's which I want to add panel
mounted fine EFC controls.
I did consider Bourn's Helipots, but found used on ebay were $20 to $30 each
and none had more than two for sale.  I did look at the ebay Bourn,s *tribute*
pots with dials from China which seemed to have the exact same item from $10 to
$2 (with free shipping). I remembered that Charles Steinmetz had posted to the
list that he found many of a lot he purchased were defective.
So I went alookin (southern USA term for searching) for a viable alternative,
hence the Maxim DS 1804 non-volatile 10K pot with 100 taps that has a simple
toggle up or down interface. (I have no ability to do serial or computer
control.  I found a Microchip AN 691 which showed how to use two or three
digital pot in series/parallel configurations.
Three DS 1804's and a good reference IC for less than $10. A simple TL431 or
LM723 heater circuit would be $2.  So with 100 taps on each IC, I figured (with
lots and lots of toggling). I could achieve sub-millivolt or better tuning
steps.
And I was fairly certain that fine EFC tuning was like grandma getting ready
for church on Sunday.  She was ready when she was ready. No amount of fussing
or cajoling could change that. It occurred on her time (slow) table.
Comments appreciated.

Perrier

[time-nuts] Digital Pots, wiper noise and fine tweaking oscillators

Do digital pots after setting have wiper noise?
When making fine tuning tweaks to the EFC of an OCXO, can one move it to its

[time-nuts] 100 MHz decade divider advice needed

2019-11-29 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Bubba Dudes!,
I'm considering attempting  making a 10 MHz frequency difference meter sort of
based on the Ticor 527.
The design calls for using 100 MHz OCXO's and using the PLL difference to steer
the EFC and then mix it with a PLL 90 MHz locked to the reference 10 MHz.  Then
that 10MHz difference is fed into the next stage PLL and the process repeated
in the following stages.
Hy problem is this.  The only generally available 100MHz decade divider I've
found is the 74LS196N.
The problem arises that on the TI website it's advertised as going to 100 MHz
BUT when one reads the data sheet it says that it only works to 85 MHz or so.
I found on ebay the MC12080 100 MHz to 1.1GHz chip that can be configured to
divide by 10.
Now the ON units carried by the big name distributers are about $6.  The Chicom
no-brand-name units on ebay are less that $2 each.
I'd really like to use the LS296 chip as it is a dip type and *genuine* ones
sell for less than $2 on ebay.
Since I need one OCXO for each decade stage plus one for the 90 MHz reference,
at $50 each used on ebay this starts to get very expensive quickly.
I did find some obscure 100 MHz decade counters on some design circuit on the
net but I'd never heard of them and expect they will be unobtainum.  The same
seems to be true for the 74S and 74AC series.

So will the LS196 chip work reliably at 100 MHz or am I stuck with the MC 12080
or is there a better chip that I could use?

Perrier

[time-nuts] DUT Error Multiplication (was FA-2 Questions)

2019-10-16 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Bubba Dudes!,
I proposed using a HP8586A and a Fluke 6080 for DUT error multiplication of 100.
Several responses basically said: the HP8656 sucked so bad it wouldn't work.
Ed suggested brick PLL but i couldn't find any I could understand.

So a new idea since another signal generator is not in the budget.
What about the possibility of using the ADF 4351 35 Meg to 4.4Ghz PLL's along
with the AD8342 active DBL mixer to get my times 100? This setup would total
about $100 and be very small.

I'm not concerned about phase noise.

[time-nuts] FA-2 questions

2019-10-12 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Bubba Dudes!,
First, does the internal OCXO run when the power is turned off?
Wrote:
We are presently experimenting using a ISC570B  multiplier at 100 MHz and get
13 digits seeattached but the data out of the back is only 12 digits reliable.
Looking it up I found out that the ISC570B is a teeny - tiny IC which for me
would pose a problem to implement.

So looking at alternatives that I already had I came up with two possible
alternative multiplier ideas.
The first was to put the 10 MHz DUT into the external reference of my (boat
anchor) HP signal generator set the output frequency to 200 MHz and put the
output into the channel 1 input to get extra resolution digits.
Expanding upon that, I came with more complex but what may be a better error
multiplier reading since I have both signal generators on hand.
First I feed the 10 MHz DUT signal into my Fluke 6080 setting the output to 1
GHz.  I'd then feed the reference 10 MHz signal into the external reference of
my HP 8656 and set the output to 990 MHz.
Next I'd feed both outputs into a
AD8342 LF to 3.8GHZ Active Mixer Down conversion Output withBalun Transformer

board from ebay ($23) and then feed the multiplied signal into channel 1. (I
may need a simple low pass filter.)

This should give me a 100X error multiplication.

Am I on the right track or am I missing something?

Perrier

[time-nuts] Question for my new GPSDO Heater

Yo Bubba Dudes!,
The suggestion was made to use a ebay item number 192112054053 heater for this
project.
Now it's cheap and has a digital reading.
BUT
It is a bang- bang controller using a relay.  At some point that relay will
stop working.  Also all designs I've seen for good temperature control use
proportional solid state controllers.  There are plenty of free designs on the
internet.
Lastly, if one believes that this is long term reliable controller that will
deliver .1 degree accuracy, for that price, please contact me off line and I

[time-nuts] GPS Disciplined Oscillator FS

2019-09-10 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Bubba Dudes!,
Several years ago I bought a GPSDO from Hong Kong.
It didn't lock even afer running for 24+ hours.
The seller agreed to replace it BUT shipping was quoted at $175.  So I was
stumped.  Now later the USPO will send it for $35 but the seller may be long
gone and shipping anything to HK right now seems a bit dicey.

It appears very similar to all those on ebay except the front panel is green
and has the LCD display on the front and the GPS antenna input on the back. In
very tiny print on the front panel is the number 20127A-Y44 but no other
identification.

I've never opened as I too busy with other *stuff*. Lose connection or other: I

I paid $219 for the receiver, PS, and antenna.
I would be willing to sell it for $50 and postage from 92220.

[time-nuts] FSA3011 Frequency Stability Analyzer, HP 8405A or TAPR TIC

2019-07-30 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Bubba Dudes!,
I've been following the discussion of the FSA3011 with great interest.
Now I'm not in the upper levels of TN esoteric knowledge or have a burning
desire to ever get there.   After seeing some small reference somewhere I
looked at the HP 8405A on ebay and the price range seemed comparable to the
FSA3011. Now the HP 8405 is a huge beast but i was thinking that it might be
easier for me to use.  I'm interested in just 5 and 10 MHz oscillator
comparison.  I know nothing about computer programs or writing any code.
I also looked at the TAPR TIC.
So my conclusion are:
The FSA3011 may be technically the best BUT it seems to be having some teething
problems and I don't really know about what programs it runs or needs.
The HP 8405A is a big beast, but it maybe simpler for me to run and get the
results I want which is stopping around 10 to ^12th. But I may have to watch it
for a long time.
The TAPR TIC is small (needed) cheaper (also a plus) and seems to run available
software. but needs a dedicated laptop, which is not a real problem. I also
have several extra HP 18011's available.

Your opinions are gratefully solicited,

[time-nuts] HP 10811 stabilizing time

2019-07-21 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Bubba Dudes!,
I bought a HP 10811 from ebay for $36 and shipping.
I installed it in my HP 5335a counter.  After running continuously for about 90
days it was down to about 4 to 6  parts in -10.  I couldn't adjust it for
better accuracy as HP in their infinite and inscrutable wisdom provided a edge
connector for the 10811 but didn't make provision for EFC one had only the
course adjustment.  Sheesh!
Now maybe I was very lucky in my ebay purchase.  On ebay prices seem to go from
$125 to around $60.  One of the lower priced sellers advertise that their
10811's are *tested* but no details.

[time-nuts] GPS frequency uncertainty

2019-07-10 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Bubba Dudes!
In a number of fascinating and highly educational for me were the explanation
of accuracy by TVB and others.  I learned quite a lot, thank you.
Bob mentioned about slight orbital variations in the GPS satellites.
IIRC those slight variations meant that you could only reliably get about
1x10^12.accuracy.
Would someone please expand on what the practical frequency calibration limit
might be?

Perrier

[time-nuts] Used Hydrogen Maser

2019-07-10 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Bubba Dudes!,
OK, I'll finally ask the question that probably a lot of list members wanted to
know but were reticent to ask.
First, what is the price of one of a new Hydrogen Maser? (This is important if
I win the lottery.)
Second, what would be prices for used Hydrogen Maser in *reasonable* working
condition and what might be the long term costs to keep it running?
Thirdly, what are the chances of finding a used one?
Then again, might it be better, money wise just to limp along with used HP Cs?

Perrier

[time-nuts] Using the LT3042

2019-07-10 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Bubba Dudes!,
The LT3042 seems to be a wonderful part.  But having learned a long time ago
the it wasn't wise to gold plate a Yugo, so when are there diminishing returns?
For example I have several HP 10811 oscillators. one is in a HP5335a counter
that I'd like to make as stable as reasonably possible. Another HP10811 needs a
power supply.   Also several Lucent XO OCXO's.
So where is it practical to hack for better results and when do you use some
not -as -wonderful regulator chips that come in a much easier to use dip
package for a power supply upgrade?

Perrier

[time-nuts] Excellent equipment rack

2019-06-11 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Bubba Dudes!,
Needing to go vertical with my test equipment I went bottom feeding for an
equipment cabinet on ebay.
To make a long search story short: they were way too expensive, too heavy to
ship and too far away for pickup.
So I kept searching and finally came across what was listed as *42U Four Post
Open Frame Server Data Rack 19 inches.  Adjustable depth 23 to 32 inches.ebay
number 152319524877.Sold by Raising Electronics for US $188 and free shipping.
I was unsure what a *U* height meant put it seemed tall enough so I bought one.
I was a little apprehensive about this being a Chinese metal product.  I was
very pleasantly proven very wrong.
Although it only comes with a picture of an assembled unit it has been engine
ed so there is no way you can assemble improperly. The four posts are all equal
and can be installed with any end up or down and the top and bottom brackets
will fit.  It comes with the exact 50 M6-20 head bolts and nuts needed for
assembly.  The nearest SAE equivalent bolt size is 1/4 20 x 1/2L which I
purchased to hold L shelf brackets to the frame.
I set the depth of mine to 26 inches so my 5370's fit well and I had space for
both power and BNC cables to be inside the frame.

This rack is designed to be bolted to the floor.  Wanting to be able to move
it, I cut a piece of 3/4 inch plywood a little longer and wider then the base
footprint and installed 4 inch tall Harbor Freight swivel casters on the four
corners for ease of movement in any direction, even on floor carpeting.  After
assembly it was 6 ft 9 inches tall.

Now this being a bolted together *skeleton frame* it is prone to twisting and
or becoming a parallelogram sideways.  To prevent twisting, I fitted a plywood
board on the top bolted to the top front and rear angle pieces.  To prevent a
side-to-side movement required an 8 inch wide piece of scrap aluminum plate
bolted to the rear vertical posts.  This is easy to do as there are a plethora
of precision spaced holes available.
There was some very serious thought given to the vertical post design.  It has
six 90 degree folds done in such a way that the inner edge on each outer side
gives a 19 inch opening.
However behind it is as inner fold where one can install recessed L shaped
brackets. Now the inner fold is about and inch narrower than the outside
edge. This allows making a wider shelf that can *float* on top the brackets but
can't slide out either end.
This was very useful when configuring the instrument arrangement.
I also found that with the bottom shelf being just 6 inches above the floor I
was able to install more equipment in the same vertical space than in my
previous normal sized equipment cabinet.
Another bonus with this type of configuration is that it's easier to keep the
equipment cool and it's much lighter.
Regards,
Perrier

[time-nuts] R390 Non A Upgrade Info Wanted

2019-05-26 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Bubba Dudes!,
Uh being of unsound mind since I'm planning on moving 2,200 miles in the coming
future..
Honest honey, this R 390 was just sitting there on ebay at such a low price, it
uh just sorta, somehow err, followed me home.
So now that I have my 2nd one (and the first one is still untouched after 5
years)
---Yes, please doctor adjust my meds---
Oh yes, where was I?  Ms. Pelosi?

Ah yes! Now I remember.
I am in the process of digitizing the OEM R 390  2 part ski from Andy Morrer's
site.  This will be a long time coming.  What I wanted to do is incorporate in
the ski's is information of parts that are problematic.  Under-wattage
resistors, leaky caps, parts to add or improve or any information of that
nature. Or tips or tricks that I can add as annotations.  I will add an
attribution list for those who contribute even if they are SK.  When done I'll
make the BIT TIFF image available on several sites or from me.
For those who might not be familiar with the BIT type of image it is only black
or white no matter what print size is chosen - no smearing.  So one can go to
Kinko's and for $10 get a 24" X 48" print to put on the wall if needed.

So please send me any information you have whenever using an original email and
I'll add it to a word file and eventually incorporate it into the final
schematics

Regards,
Perrier

Re: [time-nuts] Distribution amplifier for 10MHz and 1 pps

Yo Bubba Dudes!
Wrote:
Gosh. This topic comes up at least once every 6 months. Adiligent search of the
time-nuts database would turn up amazing things. . .
Yep, it does and it always will for at least two reasons.
One, we have new people joining the list.  Which is great. They're at the
beginning of a learning curve and most aren't in the upper echelons of TN
knowledge.  It's a hobby for them not an extension of their professional lives.
But they want to learn and make progress

New members aren't aware of the past data base of info, and speaking for myself
I never found an easy way to search.  If there is an easy way to do so I'm
willing to be taught.
I learn a lot from the posters even if it is far above my technical skills.  If
I have no understanding or interest of post(s), I just delete it and keep what
interests or is helpful to me.
That's as it should be, and hopefully always will be, on a list like this with
such a diverse mix of members.
Now we all started spending 9 months in a nice warm water bath happily sucking
our thumb.
Then some dude takes us out, turns us upside down, and slaps us on our butt
while saying *Welcome to the world*!
Now what we think is: Say what sucker! I was perfectly happy where I was and
minding by own business.
However, like it or not, we are then at the start of the unending learning
curve until our lights goes out figuratively or literally.

Perrier

[time-nuts] WWV and legal issues

2018-08-29 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Dudes!
WWV and all its variations distribute what in the USA is the legal standard of
time (from USNO) and frequency (NIST).
If one is running a freq cal service IIRC it is a legal requirement to be able
to have traceability to WWV.

If one was to rely on other sources, one has no guarantee that it 1. It is as
accurate as claimed and 2. It can't be *diddled* with accidentally or
deliberately.
Although GPSDO's are very good and popular, they come from satellites that are
vulnerable to damage from earth based resources.
When your time and frequency standard(s) is under control on your own physical
territory then they stand or fail on their own.
After the atom bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, one of the major inventors of
the bomb (I don't remember who) went to see US president Harry Truman and
essentially told him that the scientists who developed the bomb should have a
say of how or when it should be used.
Truman is reported to have said for him to leave his office and told an aid
that was responsible for his schedule to "never in hell let that (or any other)
scientist  come to his office to influence American defense policy."
Considering its status from both a scientific and political perspective, IMNSHO
it will go on as before.
To explain the political. No government official wants to see China or the
Russian federation tell the world quote: See, the USA can't be trusted for
something as important and simple as frequency and time.  However we are your
friends who you can trust. Unquote.
Regards,

This is a case of practical use of WWV albeit over 50 years a go the
fundamentals are still valid today.
At Karamursel Air station TUSLOG 234 I was assigned to the base receiver site.
Our base had to purposes.  to

[time-nuts] Tracor 527E manual

2018-07-30 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Dudes,
I need a Tracor 527E manual.  I have a copy of the A manual.
The difference is the A manual utilizes a CRT. The E model uses a panel meter
for showing differences.
Would buy, or borrow or pay for photo copies

[time-nuts] HP cesium beam tube life

2018-06-19 Thread Perry Sandeen via time-nuts
Yo Dudes!
A while back someone asked about the life of a HP Cs tube.
 Fromthe HP 5061B Operators Manual:
“2.7  The shelf life of the cesium beam tube I twoyears at storage
temperatures up to +35 C (+95F) if the ion pump is operated 2 or 3 times a
year.  If the ion pump is not operated to maintainthe vacuum within the cesium
beam tube, the expected shelf life is reduced.”

“2.8  Temperature during storage and shipmentshould be limited as follows:

 a.   Maximum temperature: +75 C (167F).  Long term storage: +35 C (95F).

 b.   Minimum temperature: - 40 C  (-40).
 NOTE:
Whenstoring the HP 5061B for 6 months or longer, set the MODE switch to CS OFF
andapply continuous as line power to the instrument.  This enables the ion pump
to maintain thevacuum within the cesium beam tube with the cesium beam tube
off.”
Bold emphasis by HP
Mysnarky comment about 2.7.   Shelf lifeinfers a tube uninstalled in storage.
OK,how about a detailed procedure with drawings, for taking the tube and
temporarilyrunning the ion pump to extend the shelf life?.  Apparently no
oneread this comment and thought about its logical implementation.
