RE: [tips] Washoe has passed away.

If you read Roger Fouts account of his time with Washoe and her foster
children, you cannot possibly have any doubts whatsoever that she truly
used language in a represenative fashion as opposed to simple imitation.
She would actually sign to herself while paging through magazines without
knowing she was being observed. "Next of Kin" is extremely intriguing,
poignant and informative.

The obituary unaccountably failed to mention that Washoe is also known
for biting off the finger of the neurosurgeon Karl Pribram, one of the
authors (with George Miller and Eugene Galanter) of "Plans and the
Structure of Behavior", on most undergraduate psychology course reading
lists in my day.

Some critics can be really vicious when they don't like a book.

Greetings,
many years ago my students wrote to people mentioned in their textbooks. One of
our questions asked, "Could you send us a picture?" From the Gardners we
received a baby picture of Washoe. If you would like to see it, let me know by
e-mailing me using my hotmail acct.
