[tips] On Bob Boice's Exaggerated Demise

2011-01-19 Thread Richard Hake
On 8 October 2010 I transmitted to TIPS and TeachEdPsych the abstract
and link to a post titled "Re: Looking for Robert Boice" [Hake
(2010a)]. That post ended with:

"IF ANYONE HAS INFORMATION ON BOICE'S WHEREABOUTS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW."

Thanks to the responses of Alan Craig, Diane Dempster, and Ernest
Rakow, I was able to contact Bob Boice and discover that:

BOB IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN TENNESSEE.

For those who may be interested, on 5 Nov 2010 I forwarded to the POD
discussion list a message "On Bob Boice's Exaggerated Demise" [Hake
2010b)] that gives Bob's account of the details. It can be accessed
at .

It's sad to see Keith Richards reduced to such circumstances.

[tips] Stimulus generalization? Couldn't resist

2011-01-19 Thread michael sylvester
Some burglars in Central Florida came across an urn at a home and thought it
was cocaine.They started snorting.
The report did not indicate if they experienced an altered state.
Can you envision crematoriums ( or is it crematoria?)becoming the new war on
drugs battle front? Zombies anyone?

RE: [tips] Psychologist on BEM on Morning Television

2011-01-19 Thread Shearon, Tim

Dr Hartstein. Here is a bit of her bio from her web-page:

"Dr. Hartstein received her BA from George Washington University in Washington,
DC before earning her MA in Dance/Movement Therapy from Hahnemann University in
Philadelphia. She worked as an Allied Therapist on two adolescent inpatient
units, creating and implementing group therapy programs, before returning to
Yeshiva University to complete her doctorate in School-Child Clinical
Psychology.

Dr. Hartstein works with children, adolescents and their families who have a
wide range of psychological diagnoses. She has received intensive training in
adolescent suicide assessment and has specialized in this population for
several years, using a variety of treatment approaches, including Dialectical
Behavior Therapy. Dr. Hartstein has published and presented on teen-related
issues, and has been asked to speak as an expert on a variety of psychological
issues in print and on television and radio. "

>From what I could tell it was a PsyD. I hope it doesn't reflect on her actual
>training that we take a "leap of faith" about research being "valid and
>right". Surely this is the ambling of a web-writer- the "has been asked to
>speak as an expert" sounds more like a role one would play as opposed to . . .
>oh, never mind.

I hope folks contact the CBS Morning Show about their concerns regarding Ms.
Hartstein's unacceptable reflections and comments regarding the scientific
study of ESP.

[tips] Course evaluation items

2011-01-19 Thread Rick Froman
I am working with a group to develop some questions for our student course
evaluation instrument that is used in faculty evaluations to ascertain the
degree to which students felt prepared to take the course and the degree to
which they desired to take the course. Research indicates (and for this I am
taking the word of our Associate Dean of Institutional Effectiveness) that
these two variables (along with the technical nature of the course and whether
or not it is a general education requirement), affect course evaluations and we
would like to develop a way to mitigate the effect of these variables on the
overall ratings.

If there are any survey experts out there in TIPSland who would have a proposed
wording for these two variables (preparation for the course and desire to take
the course), I would love to receive your suggestions off-list. Thanks in
advance on behalf of all of us who teach courses in which we fight an uphill
battle from day one to convince students that they need what the course will
provide (Statistics anyone?).

[tips] military resilience

2011-01-19 Thread Dale R. Floody

Hi. In case you missed it, the latest issue of American Psychologist is
devoted to a joint effort of the U.S.Army and positive psychologists (led by
Seligman) to promote the development of resilience in military personnel. It's
a massive study that has been developing for the past couple of years, with the
intent of preventing PTSD-type symptoms before they emerge. I spent some time
yesterday exploring and thinking about the articles in the issues (flow state),
and put a brief summary on my web page (link below) under "military
resilience". Take it easy!
